SURAT THANI - Koh Tao police have been ordered to look into the death of a Belgian tourist found dead on Koh Tao in April again after her case was posted in social media.

Deputy Surat Thani police chief Pol Col Preecha Kladsawad on Thursday directed investigators of Koh Tao police station to reopen the investigation into the death of Elise Dallemange after her story was run on the Samui Times, an online newspaper, and later shared by the CSI LA Facebook account.

Dallemange, 30, arrived at the island in Koh Tao district on April 19 and checked in at a bungalow at Mae Haad, according to the Samui Times.

The tourist told her mother by Skype on April 17 that she was on her way home after 18 months of her globe-trotting trip and she booked a ferry ticket to Chomphon province on April 24 on her way to Bangkok, it said.

Her bungalow was burned down on the day she arrived and her luggage arrived in Chumphon but its owner never arrived, according to the online media. Her body was found a few days later in the jungle in Tanote bay "partially eaten by animals, wrapped in T-shirts", it said.

Police on the resort island concluded that she had committed suicide. Local press were not aware of the death at the time.

Koh Tao police chief Pol Lt Col Chokchai Sutthimek on Thursday confirmed the case but gave some different accounts.

He said the body was found on April 27 but denied that part of it was eaten by animals or wrapped up. Dellemange was found with a rope tied to her neck from a tree in the jungle and evidence showed that she could have died between April 23-24, he added.

The officer said the body was sent to the mainland for an autopsy at Surat Thani Hospital and the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Police General Hospital in Bangkok. The cause of death was suffocation from lack of oxygen as a result of the rope, he added.

Police informed the Belgian embassy in Bangkok and her mother before cremating her in the presence of embassy staff, according to the Koh Tao police chief. The mother came to Thailand to collect her belongings, he added.

He denied that her bags had arrived in Chumphon on a ferry as reported by the Samui Times.

Pol Lt Col Chokchai said the wooden bungalow where she stayed was burned down on April 19 and witnesses saw her and other tourists escaped the fire. "She disappeared afterwards before the body was found in Tanote bay, which was on the other side of the island," he said.

The island police commander said police assumed that the fire was due to a candle or a lamp in her room but police did not collect evidence at the place after the resort owner had no intention to lodge a complaint with police.

Koh Tao has turned infamous after two Briton tourists, David Miller and Hannah Witheridge, were brutally murdered in September 2014. The Appeal Court handed down the death sentence on two Myanmar migrants.

Russian Valentina Novozhyonova went missing in February this year on his visit to the island

This is horrible and what makes it worse , as you read the article you know how it is going to end. Suicide!!!!! There is plenty of blame to go around, the Mickey Mouse police of KT need to take much of it, but they have no training, no sense of ethics or right and wrong, no investigative skills, the central authority is also to blame. Also, WHY? WHY? WHY? do not European embassies make this shit-hole on the list of DO NOT VIsit locations.
This is no time for flippancy but one thing is for sure--Going to KT is a suicide gesture.

Having now read further reports published in the international press there are some claims that pressure was applied to the Thai press to keep this story under wraps so that tourism was not affected ....WTF.

It's about time this island was cleaned up once and for all

Absolutely! All local officials, governor, police, village heads etc. should be summarily moved to positions on the Burmese border. Thing is with this island is that it is so small and out in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, that those families of dark influence that abide there think that Thai law does not apply on "their" island.

The Sun newspaper in the UK has just run this story...& has also made readers aware of all the other victims over the last 3 yrs, & the suspicious nature of each of their deaths.
* All backpackers *All quite young * Suicide being the leading cause of death according to the RTP.
Not looking good for future tourism from Europe.

This article from the Mirror seems to summarize it all, with photos of the seven victims. Site seems to be unblocked and viewable in Thailand via your normal ISP. Pete

If (and it isa big IF) this publicity has any effect on British readers the conclusion is not going to be
"KT is a dangerous place, don't go there" but rather "Thailand is a dangerous place, don't go there"

Koh Tao as well Koh Phangan are places where young people enjoy with hard booze, drugs and stupid games as drinking as you can or cannot any more, jumping into a pool from your balcony, of course after having drunk a lot or eating some mushrooms or anything else.
I believe that some farangs are victim of their stupidity, but I am sure some of them are victim of crime.

And the Thais on KT and KP make money and that means the police make money from all this insanity. So only an order from BKK is ging to stop this.
If the Euro press want to put pressure it would be to ask the question--Why is the Military govt SO WEAK that it cannot control things. Loss of Face is the best motivation for action in Thai.

I've commented on this subject before.
Having just read the article in the daily mirror makes my blood boil.
How these human crap get away with this leaves me furious.
Thai shit!
There is no future for this pathetic country unless things change.....and that won't happen quickly.
Especially when it is governed by idiots.

Police...holy crap, what a joke you all are.....look at a real police force and learn....but I forget, thanks to your lack of government, it's hard for you to learn with no real education in place.
I'm suprised you can sustain a heartbeat with so little going on upstairs.

I am going to make it my life's mission to deter people from going to 'murder island'.

Rant over.

Belgian woman 'covered ID' before death

"SURAT THANI: Belgian tourist Elise Dallemagne appeared to be trying to conceal her identity when she checked in at a resort on Koh Tao a week before she was found dead in April, a local bungalow employee told police on Saturday."....

Well Jack's rant maybe a hard one to follow  . . . . . . but anyway . . .

I think it makes it all the much sadder when expats and foreigners living on the island are turning a blind eye to things that are quite clearly unacceptable in any society, or 'pretty sketchy stuff' as it was described.

According to the statistics there are 4500 residents on KT, 2000 of which are foreign/non Thai.
That's a substantial percentage of the population and there is no doubt, they know exactly what is going on and what has happened previously.

In my eyes they are actually worse then the locals. :tsk:

In some professions, Medicine and architecture come to mind--Thais leave and study/work abroad. There are in Asia good police forces--HK and S'pore come to mind. I wonder how many Thai cops have spent time with those forces--best guess-0

Well, Death Island makes lots of tourist dollars so everyone is in on it from the bottom up to the top (excluding the Burmese slaves). Thing is, that there is nowhere to hide on that island and no way off it other than the ferry once a day...unless you have a speed boat like the ones in Samui, so the foreigners there won't say anything as they will be found hanging from a tree too.

Having read numerous stories in the press on this, it almost appears like her actions were one of someone who was being threatened or stalked. Looks like we will get the merry dance of smoke, mirrors and misdirection from the thugs that run the island.

Short of building a naval base with a large military/police force from BBK on the island then there is no way anything will change...it's too far out into the sea. Periodically, the BBK cops turn up in a helicopter but the island is informed by their spies in the force beforehand as to when and for how long they will stay.

Places like this look like the beach resort you see on the mainland but they aren't, it's the wild west, and all the mafia families that live there are basically descendants of coconut pickers and pirates (many of whom are probably not even Thai really).

People that go to these places have no idea what is actually going on there or who their hosts really are.
