Internet speed drop from exchange
Internet speed drop from exchange
This is a graph showing drop off in speed dictated by distance from an exchange. I though somebody may be interested in this, and is why it is important to know where the exchange is. Obviously, this doesn't matter if you are on fibre.

Speed.io says speed of my ADSL copper pair is nice, the router is around 1 km from Black Mountain golf club, but ping is appalling.
Using Speedtest.net to connect to UK servers in Manchester and London was even better with London showing
68.7 Kbit/s, 4.6 Kbit/s but still ping at 205 ms

I'm no expert, but isn't that only about 7 Mb/sec Download and 0.6 Mb/sec Upload?
I didn't realise they did such slow Internet anymore. That's 5 years ago speed, or am mis-converting Kbits to Mbs?
Or is that the point? Copper speeds.

I'm no expert either, that's for sure.
I have VDSL I think, paying for 10 Mb (I don't know where my receipt is and 3BB didn't give me any online account to check. It was just over 700 Baht a month last year, but think it's available cheaper now.
Anyway I wouldn't intend to pay for fibre. Everything streams perfectly here and d/l speeds are fine for me. A 350 MB episode of Corrie d/loads in less than 15 seconds. Not really sure why people need crazy speeds for personal home use.

I found out why when I was trying to stream a music concert while three younger Thai visitors and family members were playing online games on their phones! Not really sure why people need crazy speeds for personal home use.

Re: Internet speed drop from exchange
If you think that's slow I get 0.9 mbs download and 0.4 mbs upload at best here in Wales.
Its copper, no fibre where I live. There is no chance of streaming anything !!

I don't understand that need for crazy speeds either. Fine for businesses. But what puzzles me is the fibre optic thing. Back in about 1976/77 I was married to a telephone engineer in Hull - then a Council run telephone company, now a private company. Around that time hubby was sent to Chicago on a training course for fibre optic. It was the next big thing in telecomms then, but didn't seem to make much of an impression at all. Of course we didn't even have broadband then, but now that the local company is busting a gut to install fibre direct to users homes (and almost went bankrupt in the process) Hull still has one of the slowest speeds in the country.404cameljockey wrote: ↑Tue Jul 18, 2017 7:04 pm [quote="Big Boy" post_id=443552 time=1500377806 user_id=117

I've no overriding desire for crazy speeds either. I'm just saying that what 404cameljockey is quoting, is well below the standard (cheapest) packages most providers quote these days. I realise that not everywhere can access the infrastructure required for the basic packages though.

I'll admit it, when I made this comment it was a leader. I'm a retired telecom engineer. When I retired in 2004 the idea of delivering fiber to a home was nothing more than a wet dream of the telecoms. The equipment just didn't exist. I have not kept up with advancements in the industry over the years.
Realistically the speeds fiber is capable of delivering are far greater than what I can imagine the average user having a need for. But, the ability to smoothly stream live sports and movies really does benefit from fiber.
Whether or not the expense of installing fiber to a home is worth the cost will be determined by the end users. For my money, its not worth it yet.
Re: Internet speed drop from exchange
I had no choice but to use 3bb fibre optic where I am as its the only provider. True and AIS said they would do at some stage. But it will have to be something special to make me change.

Re: Internet speed drop from exchange
Anybody know if there fibre throughout Cha-Am?
Re: Internet speed drop from exchange
I have 3BB fiber at the house in Hua Hin(Soi 6), but it still uses the original copper wire from the house to a big box on a pole about 20 metres from the house. I assume that there is some form of interface equipment in the box, but the "technician" that I asked(several years ago), had no idea how it worked. I do not know what speeds are achieved as the house is leased out, but the client is happy with it and streams TV over it.(and it is the basic 3BB connection)
A recent change in my Condo in Bangkok now has the Internet connected over the cable TV system. My daughters has been changed and I steal her connection, as I have yet to have my own wireless modem installed. They did send the usual "technicians" a couple of times, but as they wanted to nail the co-ax cable exposed on a wall, they were sent on their way!
The speed is great, although I have not run a test on it. It drops out occasionally, but only for minute or so.

Re: Internet speed drop from exchange
fiber gives users faster ping times and low latency,
this can be useful for streaming and online gaming.
The biggest problem you will have with any internet connection in Thailand is how much international bandwidth your isp allows you to use, also how quickly they restrict connections to streaming servers overseas.
Thai isps will use traffic shaping based on user agents as well as traffic type so beware
