Buy a good Chair for computer

Post by musungu »

I have a back problem which gets worse when I have spent time at my desk top computer.
Can you suggest where I can buy in Hua Hin a good chair which will not give me back ache. Thank you all.

Not sure where you can get one in Hua Hin. I have just bought a new one in Bangkok and there are a couple of things to watch out for. The chair has a label that states "LAZBOY", which I suppose is a take off of "Lazy-Boy" or what ever the trademark name is. They are of course Chinese knockoffs.

I looked at several and the first thing is that on most of them, the actual seat part is too short, resulting in not much support under your thighs. The next thing is that the back is not adjustable, and results in a half laid back posture or no back support at all. The armrests are either too low or too high, and not something noticeable until you put it near a desk. The covering on the one I eventually bought claims to be "bonded leather", what ever that is. But whatever it is it is not suitable for a hot climate.

In hindsight I think a low back chair with open mesh weave would be a better option. These things are not cheap. The one I have was listed at 18,000 Baht, but discounted to 7,400 Baht. Bought from Officemate, but not listed on their Website.

I picked a new one up in Home Pro of all places after trying a few others. I told the guy in the chair section at the back left what I wanted it for ( Long hours at computer) and he pulled out a few for me to try. The one I settled on has adjustable height and a springy back. I am 5' 11" and thigh support is perfect. Cost me 6k which compared to the last one 40k! and this one is more comfortable. I had no luck in half a dozen other places.

Yes Nereus you are so correct about the "half laid back posture" because that (I think) is the main cause of my ache - also the dog likes to get under the desk which pushes me out a bit!!

Crazy - Can you adjust the back of your chair?

I've seen some decent looking computer chairs in Big Kiang (never tried them though).

The place I was most impressed with was going North out of town on the left, just past the palace lights (sorry, just can't think of the name - must be old age  ). The shop that sells similar stuff to Home Pro, but posher. They had some really nice looking computer chairs.

This is what a good chair looks like, but it would need to include an office girl!

Yes, very similar to what we had at work back in the day. Just need to be very aware of the weight limitation.

I bought my office chair from Big Kiang and have no complaints. It has a high, mesh back and can be set quite tall although I think that after 6 years' use the gasket has failed and it gradually sinks down to the bottom setting within a few minutes.

However, I think it's your posture and not the chair you should assess. It's easy to slouch in almost any chair, orthopaedic or not, and you need some reminder on your desk or computer screen reminding you to sit upright.

The back is fixed on mine but springy enough. My friend, who has back and hip problems is 130 kg and I cannot get him out of it when he comes over unless I put his beer out of reach then I can nip back in.

I'm not being pedantic here. Load bearing is very important. If the person is too heavy, the spindle can break through the seat, and bring extreme pleasure or pain, depending upon your point of view  . It won't happen immediately. There was a hell of a panic when it was realised my chair at work, which I had been using for some time, had insufficient weight bearing.

They had to hire a temporary seat until a brand new all singing, all dancing model was made for me.

I,ve had back problems for years from working on the rigs , the orthopedic surgeon who was treating me with heat packs Therapy while on a rack, combined with muscle relaxants to prevent muscle spasms ...this went on for months...and worked ...The main thing though is to lose weight around belly decreasing strain on back and not sitting at a computer desk for long periods..Hope this helps.
