Another cracking, edge of seat game involving Ireland. They didn't heed the cliche and play for the full 80 minutes though. 79 minutes just ain't good enough these days. As for Wales, not sure if they got 5 minutes in and from what I saw of the England game it wasn't much better. Thanks to Ireland and France for rescuing the weekend rugby!
Thinking again, a match between the Six Nations champ and the Tri Nation champ would be something. Like a World Cup final or the Superbowl. Pete :]
Fraid not Pete, six nations teams peak in march at the end of the european winter with a winner, though not always a grand slammer, the southern hemisphere start their season a little later and this encompasses the Super 14 series.International friendlies are played in both closed seasons but they are very serious games and not akin to a Sven Goran Erikson soccer friendlies.
Argentina which is now my home would like to join six nations or tri nations and I can assure you that they are a far better side than italy but politics, southern hemisphere tv companies and a host of other irrelavent practices seem to deem that the Pumas will remain on their own. However they came to fortress Twickenham not too long ago and thrashed England and nearly went home unbeaten but for one point against france. They actually faced England at Twickenham after 2 two hour training sessions together.Have to admit that I like the the set up the way it is and would not like to see an annual North/Southern hemisphere final every year as the seasons are different and it would only be another few million in the bank for Murdoch.Much better to salivate and wait for the 4 year world cup which is just about to happen in march

Well, it's all over. And what a fantastic day of rugby it was! Throat is hurting and body had nothing of any nutritional value put into it yesterday. What a day! France are champions again courtesy of their controversially awarded last try against Scotland that won the title for them. Ireland could have won the title had they not elected to run the ball from their own line in injury time, ultimately losing posession & conceding a try in their game against Italy. And as for Wales v England; well what an atmosphere and what a result! And I can say......

Rugby League is played with teams of 13,Union has 15 players. In my opinion Union is a bit like American Football in that it stops, starts, stops and starts with kicking too predominant and rucks and mawls a licence to promote extreme violence.
League, however is a much more fluent, open game with a "play the ball" every time there is a tackle.
Sadly things have changed in recent years,it used to be Union players who were poached by League clubs but now that Union players are payed better the reverse has happened.
Up the Wigan Warriors

Pete,
You've been watching the 15 man Union version.
To me the main difference is that Union is much rougher tougher, while League is usually faster, without the same level of contact. However, speed is becoming more and more a factor of the modern Union game.
My opinion is that Union is for real men, while League is for those who would love to be able to play, but are not tough enough to play the real game.

Thanks BB, I am learning rapidly, along with the help of my neighbor from Oz. I understand the game but I cannot yet spot/understand penalties, either before or after the call...LOL. I can in NFL football so I guess it's just a matter of many years of watching.Big Boy wrote:Pete,

Given what you say above, I assume universities that have rugby squads must play the 'league' version' correct? I say that given the players youth. Pete

PS: There are a few upper class boarding schools in Bangkok that have rugby teams for their teenage students. I can't recall the name but one of them has a yearly trip overseas to compete with foreign teams, and some foreign teams come here.

For the first couple of years they just play tag rugby ie each player wears 2 tags - a tackle takes place when an opponent pulls your tag off.
They then advance with a tackling game taking place on a half sized pitch, but scrums are not contested up to the age of 12.
At ages 12 and 13 they progress to a 3/4 sized pitch.
At age 14 they progress to a full size pitch.
From age 15 onwards, they play the full game.
Obviously its a bit more involved than what I've said above, but it is a Sunday morning institution all over the UK, and actually a lot more popular than football (soccer).
My son has played for many years now, although he will be retiring at the end of this season to concentrate on his karate career. Have a look at my son's rugby page - in particular, look at the photos from the Keysham match on 4 Mar 07 - I think you'll agree that they take it seriously http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neal.olive ... _rugby.htm
You couldn't be further from the truth. All decent Union teams operate a full youth policy from the age of 8 ie run teams at every age group from 8 yo onwards.I assume universities that have rugby squads must play the 'league' version' correct? I say that given the players youth.
