HHDRC facing closure. We need immediate help!
oh what a nasty small minded lot some of you are! I have been made most unwelcome for 2 main reasons. The first reason is I dare dared to question the benefits of the "Dog Rescue" and the second I have not lived here long enough to have an opinion.
On the subject of dog welfare I can tell you I have been involved with running a dog sanctuary back home started up by my sister (a vet). By her own admission she became too close to the dogs she was treating and ended up keeping them as pets - not more than 12! That's my background. I asked if putting dogs used to roaming free into wired pens (dog jail), was a good thing. Is there something wrong with that question? I got a good reply from Dawn and abuse from some who claim to know whats going on but clearly don't.
The other ignorant remarks seemed to concentrate on the length of time I've been here. I haven't been here long enough to have an opinion! What a small minded village mentality. You have branded me the wiked witch and seem to have set Dawn up as some kind of crusader angel. Spare me please. I guess your ancestors would have me burned alive for daring to come in to your little world where you can all feel comfortable in your petty little lifes.
I was going to go to the HHAD party, but I don't feel a welcoming vibe so will give it a miss. This is the last time I'll be visiting this site so the saddo's can congratulate each other the wiked witch has been banished. Thankfully I have met many nice people in Hua Hin who dont rely on the internet for friends and can discuss things in an adult fashion, disagreeing or agreeing without petty insults!
My last words are I hope to meet Dawn and I appreciate her level headed feedback to my questions, which if you were to re-read - were perfectly harmless! I must admit Dawn must be a very powerful woman to have so many blind followers. It's kind of creepy in a nice way.

Blood,
There are a couple of things I would like to point out to you, if you are still reading this forum. Firstly, as a relative newcomer to the forum, you were possibly a bit too blunt with your initial post, which some people took exception to, regardless of the rights or wrongs of the subject matter; Dawn, as you have said yourself, responded in a civilised manner, while others leapt to her (unneeded) defence with the best intentions. As an aside to this point, there was at least one person, probably more, who took you to be someone well known in Hua Hin and this forum as being a stirrer, who has reappeared with regular monotony under different user names with various axes to grind, but generally just winding people up. That explains a large part of the apparent hostility towards you I think.
The other thing I would like to say is that you are not showing the same approach that you expressed admiration for in Dawn by just upping and leaving the moment you cop some opposition to your view and the way you express it; I have said this before but I always try and imagine this forum as a pub where you will meet all kinds, with all different opinions, and you don't normally go into a pub that you've never been in before and start mouthing off - you will gauge the clientele before you engage in too much debate with anyone, and particularly not a popular regular! This is not to say anyone is wrong or right but you should always show respect to others, and you possibly didn't show enough for some posters. Alternative views are always welcome and I hope you reassess your decision to quit this forum.

Blood,
If I'm not too late, I'd like to ask you to reconsider. WL is correct, a lot of us (me included) took you to be a troll (if you know forum jargon) that comes on here on regular intervals. I realised you weren't after reading some of your other posts, but maybe the others didn't read them.
I wasn't offended by your questions, nor by igor's. People have a right to an alternative opinion & to ask questions; all I ask is that I and HHDRC aren't judged until the facts are known. After that, criticise away - Sarge did & he knows me!
If you don't feel upset, please come to the party. I'll definitely be there & everyone is really nice. Honestly.

Your views are valid and should be asked. IMHO this wasnt the thread unfortunately and i am sure dogs are not the only subject/topic you are interested in

I have just had a look at www.huahinblog.com and seen the picture of Vito. It made my heart miss a beat. Instead of you being so negative try and do something positive when you are in HH (volunteer to spend a day in the shop). Everyone is entitled to their opinions

I quite agree with your petty little insults.Blood wrote:oh what a nasty small minded lot some of you are! Snip, snip,,,

It's the internet. People act like arseholes on the internet. It's just how it is and how it always has been. Best tactic is to simply get a thicker skin. Back to the original topic, how far is Dawn from getting enough to keep things going for now? I'm not in Hua Hin at the moment but I'll be out there in a few months (for at least a year) with Mrs Supertonic, and would love to help out if we can in some way.

This is a serious topic, about a serious issue and some Mrs. Blood comes in and turns it into a 'I've been victimised' issue.
What on earth is going on?
Dawn: How are the donations/funds going? Do you buy all your rice from Tescos? I would have thought that a sack of lower-grade rice from a wholesaler would be cheaper (but maybe you know otherwise). You don't need high-grade human stuff for the dogs - to them rice is rice. May just cut the feeding costs down a smidgen?
I'm sorry I can't help you out in the centre, or at the shop, due to location and work commitments. However, I do have an ever growing bag of goodies which students give me, I gracefully accept, and as I'm doing so I think 'That'll sell well at the Dog Rescue Centre Shop'.
Will pop a bag of goodies off soon - keep your chin up

Thanks for the insult, Blood - I can't recall bad-mouthing you?
Agree with Randy's post, but if thats how you're gonna react, then maybe a web forum is not for you?
A pity, as I was curious to learn why an artist - painter had decided to base themselves in HH for 6 months of the year? Also the fact you could do so suggests a modicum of success. Most artists find life a struggle. Certainly the ones I know, even painting as a profession, do. But thats in the UK.
Most of the stuff prduced in HH is touriSt pap, although I'm aware of more serious workers now settling into the area.
Meanwhile, back on thread.........

Update -
I don't know how we're doing. We've had quite a few pledges, both from the HHDRC website & here (thank you everyone!!), but with the exception of Kraka's Dad's money, which went into my Mum's UK account, nothing had come through last time I checked (Friday). That doesn't count Wanderlust or The Understudy who both donated to me personally. Thanks so much to the 3 I've mentioned. I'm sure the tardiness lies with the Thai bank account. I can't get paypal, as I don't have a credit card, but Omer, our website administrator has introduced me to a similar scheme, which I'm working to get off the ground... Hopefully next week...
To counter some of the questions about how much money we spend... OK, rice. Yes, I do always get it from Tesco. It's the 35% stuff which is about 62 baht for 5 kilos. There are 2 reasons for getting it from there. One is they often have special offers or damaged bags that are a lot cheaper. The other is that the price is consistent. We have previously ordered from 3 different merchants & the same thing has happened with every single one - They start off by giving us the cheapest rice (say 11 bt a kilo). Then, 2 visits down the line, they don't have the stock of the cheap one, so this is the next one - 13 bt a kilo. Then a couple of visits later, 15 bt a kilo is the cheapest one in stock... at least Tesco doesn't do that to us.
We have cut back on the feeding. They used to get rice in the morning & dry in the afternoon. Now they only get dry every second afternoon. Also, since the financial shortage started they have only been on dry food. At 250 bt per feed (for all dogs in center compound) it is cheaper than 300 bt per feed when rice & meat is given. The dogs don't like it as much, but needs must... Tinned food is only used to give meds in & is 18 baht a tin from Tesco.
I also had a phone call from a member who said I should point out that 60% or more of our expenditure is vet's fees. Our vet is very good & gives us a discount, but the work we do isn't maintaining dogs, it's getting them well. The 2 dogs with the broken legs cost 5,000 bt each for their leg pinning ops. Chemotherapy for VG is 800bt a session. X-rays are about 500bt. We've had many severely sick dogs need to be hospitalised at a basic cost of 100bt a night, not including meds & food. We neuter every single dog we treat (inpatient or outpatient) at a cost of 500bt to 1,000 bt per dog. Rabies vaccines are 50bt each & combined vaccines 200bt each. These prices are absolutely nothing compared to farangland, but then I don't think many sanctuaries in farangland could do our work & maintain 140 dogs for less than 1,000 GBP per month, as we do. The dogs in the center do fight & need stitched sometimes, they also get sick & need treatment. Many have coughs at the moment. We have one elderly dog with senile dementia (don't laugh) who needs imported drugs at 1,000bt per pack. Each pack lasts about 3 weeks.
These costs cannot be cut down on anymore, unless we stop doing our work & simply become a "holding station" or "dog jail" rather than a rescue center.

Migrant. I have found that the most effective and foolproof method of transferring medium amount of money (50 - 500 USD) is Western Union. You have to find a sending bank in the US, and there are many, and pay the bank an amount for sending it to Thailand. From memory 200 dollars costs about 215 dollars to send. The exchange rate is close to mean so very little is skimmed off there. Once paid a Transaction ID is given to you. You will have to send an SMS text message to dawn with the number. She then goes to the bank with the number and her passport and collects the cash in Thai Baht.migrant wrote:Dawn,
Once you figure how to move money, from the states, let me know, I'll do what I can
The Bank of Ayudhya branches are all Western Union Agents.
To collect the cash you need photo ID with the correct name and the transaction ID so it is very secure and the transfer only takes minutes.
