Power Washing of Concrete Required

Post by musungu »

I have about a 140 sm of concrete driveway that has a stain on a small area from shampoo washing of dogs.

I want to have cleaned the whole area and ask if anyone knows who can do this job in Hin Lek Fai area? I may also have them clean a patio surrounding the house but this is not so important.

Could just pick up a pressure washer, at one of the DIY shops. I have a Fasa, I think, Italian made and standing up to the test of time, about 10 yrs now. Then you can even wash the car easier. Great for getting the scooter nooks and crannys. Has 2 wands, one for blasting, one for vehicle washing.

Comes in quite handy.

Tesco had one that looked similar to that on offer the other day for under 2,000 Baht.

I'm thinking that the concrete must be very, very porous for it to have soaked up the colour from dog shampoo. Perhaps the builder intentionally laid pervious concrete which allows rain water to soak through rather than to run off? I would start by pouring on a few bottles of normal laundry bleach and letting it sit and see what happens in 24 hours. If it's fading the stain, pour more on and brush it in a bit and let sit 24 hours again. You can also use diluted swimming pool acid if you happen to have some. There are also special enzyme products made for removing pet urine stains and the like from concrete, but perhaps impossible to find here. Below are some more cleaning tips.

If you don't want it to continue to soak up stains so easily in the future I would think about having it sealed. Pete

OK Pete laundry bleach has been put on a small area, so tomorrow we shall see. If it has faded then more tomorrow. Would the pressure washer work with a mixture of bleach also, if so down to Tesco - thanks BB

My cement was from one of those large revolving lorries so I guess is some what porous. I have also put some bleach down so will watch for it getting lighter.
I am pleased PET has also got this problem so perhaps he will report back too.
The water pressure cost is much less than I thought so that may also be tried by myself - what should I add to the machine to assist the cleaning working faster?

Mine is the FASA 'EXCEL' model, and about 10+k baht. 80 or 130 bar pressure. It will peel your skin off in not careful, so when washing the car, make sure proper wand is used, or you'll take the paint off.

I've used to strip pool paint off concrete. I'd be suspect of anything cheaper, of having any quality in performance, on longevity. Just checked, and it is about 10 yrs old.

I've used it for hours at a time, as had some major issues with mold in shaded areas of the house.

Look up bleach and dogs--beware!

A 2,000 Baht pressure washer will probably last just long enough to do one job. Even Karcher brand are not much better now.

I use a similar model of power washer 3 to 4 times each week. They don't last forever, but I get a good 18 months out of one. The area I clean is 4mtr x 8mtr. Yes, if I miss and hit the walls, they strip paint as well  I'm into my 7th year of regular use - annoying when they go bang, but it's only a disposable item.

Buy expensive if its going to be regular, high intensity use - if not, IMHO cheap is fine. If it goes bang quickly, then they are guaranteed.

The power washer I have has no reservoir for any additives. Perhaps some models do? Just rinse whatever cleaning product you use well, preferably down the driveway to the street and not into your garden growing things. :D Pete

Porous concrete, or asphalt, is normally used on major roads and motorways to reduce spray thrown up by vehicles.
It’s a specialised job to mix and lay it, so I would be very surprised to see it used on a driveway, especially in Thailand.
Power wash after applying chemical cleaner or bleach and that should do the job.

All concrete is porous to some extent, and that is why it "wicks" moisture up from the ground into walls when a waterproof membrane is not used.

A 50/50 mix of vinegar and water may be a better option than bleach if pets have access to the treated area.

Be wary of blasting any sandwashed areas with a high pressure cleaner.

We have absorbent concrete for our small drive here in Soi 88. Along with all the others in our small sub-Soi.

If the dog does a pee out there it just soaks into the concrete. We need to give it a good soaking too when watering the plants.

robcar, did you happen to see how your driveway was constructed? I’m surprised that a developer went to the expense of installing porous concrete in the development. What does the surface texture look like?
Could you possibly post a picture as I’m genuinely interested as FIL is looking to install a new road to the farm of around 1K and we would be interest to look at the possibility of using porous concrete.
Thanks. 👍

I think in most cases, the laying of porous concrete is by accident rather than by design!!
