'Cave boys set to fly to Argentina, US

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... gentina-us

The 12 Wild Boars and their football coach rescued in the July cave drama will travel next week to Argentina for the Youth Olympic Games and then on to the United States for talk show appearances.

The group were invited to attend the games in Buenos Aires by Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee. They will leave their Chiang Rai homes on Oct 3 for the games, being held from Oct 6 to 18, and return home on Oct 20.

All expenses during the trip to games will be taken care of by the IOC.

The IOC will also schedule a special soccer match between the Wild Boars and Olympic youth athletes, "to form bonds of friendship", Mr Bach's office said.

While in the United States, they are scheduled to appear on the NBC network's Today Show and Late Night in New York. It is not known if they have an exlusive deal with NBC.

Some related Thai officials are expected to travel with the boys including former Chiang Rai governor Narongsak Osottanakorn, a prominent spokesman during the rescue effort.

The team entered the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in Chiang Rai province on June 23 and were subsequently trapped by rising flood waters.

It took three days to carry out the full rescues of all 13 team members.

I mean this with the utmost respect, just when I think I can't elevate their hero-status any more in my own head, this story comes out. Utterly brilliant. In many ways even more brilliant than rescuing the football boys. This wasn't thought out, wasn't planned, wasn't catered for with equipment etc. Talk about having to go with flow on the job, think on your feet, making life or death decisions. Absolutely amazing!

If, when these kids are in the states, anyone has link to the shows they'll be appearing on, I would really appreciate it if they would post the links.

British divers in Thai cave rescue make UK honours list

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/world/ ... recent_box

LONDON - A team of British divers who helped save a junior football team stranded in a flooded cave in Thailand were among those awarded in Britain's traditional New Year Honours, announced on Friday.

The seven underwater specialists involved in the remarkable rescue were joined on the prestigious annual achievement list by Hollywood filmmaker Christopher Nolan and former supermodel Lesley Lawson, better known as Twiggy.

Other recipients include Monty Python actor Michael Palin and Jim Carter from "Downton Abbey", best-selling author Philip Pullman and leading Brexiteer lawmaker John Redwood.

Four of the divers were given awards for exceptional bravery while the three others were made Members of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Richard Stanton and John Volanthen -- the first of the divers to reach the 12 stricken children and their coach -- were awarded the George Medal, the country's second highest civilian gallantry award.

Stanton had already been made an MBE in 2012 for his rescue services.

Fellow divers Christopher Jewell and Jason Mallinson receive the Queen's Gallantry Medal, while Joshua Bratchley, Connor Roe and Vernon Unsworth were decorated with MBEs.

"For me, after saving the boys, this is the icing on the cake," said Unsworth, who has also risen in fame after suing Tesla entrepreneur Elon Musk for labelling him a "pedo guy".

"This was a team effort and I'm very honoured to have been recognised, particularly as you don't engage in a major rescue expecting this outcome," he added.

Two divers win Australian award for cave rescue

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

CANBERRA: Two amateur divers who cancelled their vacation plans to join what they thought was a hopeless mission to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand on Friday received one of Australia's most prestigious awards.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison presented Australian of the Year Award 2019 trophies to anaesthetist Richard Harris and his dive buddy Craig Challen, a retired veterinarian, at a ceremony in the national capital Canberra on the eve of Australia's national day.

"A lot's been said about this little adventure that we've had, but the bottom line for me is that there are 13 families that have still got their sons they wouldn't have if we hadn't been there as part of that group,'' Dr Challen said. "That's what floats my boat.''

The complex rescue against the odds by an international team in July captured international attention. Both Australians have conceded they didn't expect that all 13 team members trapped in the cave for two weeks would emerge alive.

"It was the best-worst plan that we had. I had no confidence at all that it was going to work and that the children could survive,'' Dr Harris said.

All 13 rescued Wild Boar soccer teams members congratulated the pair through a video message in which they said: "We love you. All the best.'' The thanks brought tears to both men. Dr Harris said it was their first communication with the boys since the rescue.

Dr Challen said anyone with the necessary skills would have volunteered to help.

The boys and their 25-year-old coach entered the cave on June 23 for a quick exploration, but flooding quickly blocked the exit and they had to retreat deeper inside the cave. Heavy rains raised water levels further and thwarted the initial searches before two British divers on July 2 found the group huddled on a dry patch of ground, safe but hungry.

Dr Harris and Dr Challen arrived at the cave on July 6 and reached the team the next day.
Dr Harris sedated the 13 before they began their journey out over three days, fearing panic in the dark and confined cave system was a major threat to their survival.

Dr Challen helped remove the team's masks and wetsuits as the boys and coach were brought out on stretches through dry places. He then prepared them for their next dive through flooded sections of the cave.

Their citations say that Dr Harris's medical expertise was key in the plan to get the children out. After swimming through the narrow caverns to assess the health of those trapped and giving the medical all-clear for each evacuee, he remained behind until the last team member was safe.

The citation also says Dr Challen's technical expertise was critical to the operation. He played a leading role, working 10-12 hours each day in extremely dangerous conditions to swim the children one-by-one through the dark and narrow flooded passageways.

Two weeks after the rescue, the pair was awarded the Star of Courage, the second-highest civilian bravery decoration in the Australian honours system after the Cross of Valor.

Dr Harris said he would use his title of Australian of the Year to encourage children to test their own limits in the outdoors.

"I do fears for kids today who living in a risk-averse society will not learn to challenge themselves and to earn the grazed knees and stubbed toes that really are necessary to build resilience and confidence,'' Dr Harris said.
"You might think it's strange that having just rescued some kids from a cave, that I would like to promote kids to come underground,'' he added.

The two friends had been planning to take a cave diving vacation together when the Australian government invited them to Thailand.

Dr Harris was nominated for Australian of the Year by his home state of South Australia and Mr Challen by his state of Western Australia. They were chosen from eight state and territory nominees.

An Australian of the Year is chosen by a government-appointed board to celebrate the achievements and contributions to society of eminent citizens who are regarded as role models for their nation.

Tham Luang cave closed for retrieval of rescue gear

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

CHIANG RAI: Tham Luang cave in Mae Sai district has been closed to the public until Thursday to allow the retrieval of equipment used to rescue the young Wild Boars football team last year.

It will also be closed next week from Tuesday to Friday, inclusive.
The temporary closures were announced by Naval Special Warfare commander RAdm Apakorn Yukongkaew on Monday.

He said about 200 military and civilian officials and volunteers gathered at the cave, in Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non forest park, on Monday morning for a religious ceremony, seeking blessings for the smooth collection of abandoned rescue equipment which began immediately afterwards.

A survey in January found a lot of gear had been left inside the cave's chambers. It included wiring, air ducts, communication radios, about 300 air tanks, pumps, foil, power gel food, stretchers and ropes used to guide rescuers.

Officials responsible for the rehabilitation of the forest park agreed the present period of low natural water levels was most suitable for the recovery of the equipment.
The first phase of the operation would be over three days, from Monday to Wednesday this week, and the second phase the four days from March 26 to 29, RAdm Apakorn said.

Although the cave itself was closed during these two periods, visitors could still go to other areas of the forest park, including the Emerald Pond about two kilometres away, he said.

On June 23 last year 12 young members of the local Moo Pa (Wild Boars) Academy football team and their assistant coach entered Tham Luang cave after football practice and were trapped in there by a flash flood.

Their plight drew about 10,000 officials and volunteers, including intrepid local and international divers, launched an unprecedented rescue operation which concluded on July 10. All the youngsters and their coach were brought safely out of the cave complex. One volunteer, a former Thai navy special warfare diver, died during the perilous rescue.

Boys rescued from Thai cave were sedated with ketamine

https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2 ... 2020190407

The 12 boys trapped inside a flooded cave in Thailand last year were drugged with ketamine to keep them calm before divers pulled them to safety, doctors have revealed.

Details of the dangerous three-day rescue mission were released in a medical journal on Thursday.

The report credits the hallucinogenic drug for keeping the boys relaxed and unaware of what was happening as divers, including Australian doctor Richard Harris, ferried them through narrow underwater chambers to the surface.

The members of the Wild Boars soccer team, aged between 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old soccer coach were exploring the Tham Luang cave when it suddenly began to rain, sending floodwater into the cave and trapping them inside for more than two weeks.

Reports at the time suggested the children had been sedated during the operation, but the strategy of using ketamine – originally developed as a horse tranquiliser – was kept secret, reportedly because it was deemed risky.

But the medical journal has now revealed the boys were administered a ketamine-based anaesthesia and a full-face mask before they were swum out of the cave “wearing poorly fitting wet suits in cold water”.

Once taken to hospital, doctors gave them special oxygen masks, plus sunglasses to protect their eyes after the extended captivity in complete darkness.

Known among party drug users as ‘Special K’ or ‘ket’, ketamine is a white powder or liquid that can make people hallucinate or disassociate from their surroundings. If somebody takes too much ketamine, it can make them feel paralysed and totally disconnected from reality for several hours.

University of Melbourne chair of anaesthesia Professor David Story said doctors often administered low doses of ketamine to patients who needed extra help with pain management.

“Ketamine is different to other drugs in that their breathing and blood pressure systems are still alert but the rest of their consciousness is disassociated from what’s going on,” Dr Story told The New Daily.

“Of all of the drugs (the medics) could have chosen, where you have a kid that needs to be moved in an extremely dangerous setting in a way that they won’t panic but can still breathe, ketamine is the best choice.”

However, Dr Story said one major side effect was “quite significant hallucinations”.
“The single reason people worry about ketamine is the problem of hallucinations,” he said.
“Like a true psychedelic drug, people can be quite disturbed.
“That’s why it needs to be carefully managed by experts.”

Not the first time

After an earthquake struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch in 2011, a Melbourne doctor administered ketamine to a man who was trapped under a beam in a collapsed building before amputating his legs and freeing him.

She was among a group of doctors who had been at a urology conference in Christchurch before it was cancelled due to the earthquake.
The doctor, who did not want to be identified, used tradesmen’s tools to saw off both legs of the earthquake victim above the knee.

One of the British divers said: "I was told the boys were given a dose of ketamine [a horse tranquilliser often used as a recreational drug] to keep them calm." An American military diver added: "Those kids were proper knocked out."
Dated 12th July 2018. I'm sure there were other reports too.
