Thai cop shoots farang after losing a fight

A Bangkok police officer was arrested Wednesday after allegedly shooting a Frenchman to death.

Senior Sgt. Maj. Kantapong Huadsri, a squad leader at Lumpini Police Station, was discharged from the force after police said he and another unidentified perpetrator were caught on security camera shooting a 35-year-old French national near BTS Nana this morning.

The man was shot inside the Trendy Office and Plaza and died at the scene.

A friend of the victim said he had gotten into an altercation with Kantapong at a nearby bar. She said Kantapong was upset that he lost the fight and followed the victim back to the building and shot him in front of a Dunkin’ Donuts shop.

Khaosod English is withholding the identification of the victim until his family can be notified.

Speaking to reporters, Maj. Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn said Kantapong had confessed to shooting the man out of jealousy over a woman. He also said the officer was convicted on a weapons-related charge for shooting someone six years ago. He did not say why the officer was still on the force.

Maj. Gen. Mongkol Warunno of Metropolitan Police Division 5 said the other involved party was a waiter at the bar who owned the gun used by Kantapong.
