Man calls police after wife refuses to split the bill at Chinese restaurant
https://au.news.yahoo.com/man-calls-pol ... 30666.html
A Sydney couple’s weekday lunch date has taken a bizarre twist after they received the bill for their “succulent Chinese meal”.
Shortly before midday on Tuesday, police received a call from the seemingly fed up husband complaining that his wife was refusing to split the bill.
North Shore Police Area Command attended the Chinese seafood restaurant in Chatswood after the man said he wanted to see his wife cover her portion of the bill.
“Police spoke with the man, who phoned triple zero to alert police to the dispute, and advised him that triple zero is for emergency situations where a life is in danger, a crime is taking place, or in time critical situations,” they wrote in a statement.
They said they are unsure of who eventually paid for the “succulent” Chinese meal – a reference to an iconic viral Australia video involving Paul Charles Dozsa.
Dozsa, a former chess champion, was arrested after running from the bills at dozens of Sydney restaurants in the 1980s.
As several police officers struggled to escort him into the back of a car in front of stunned bystanders, he delivered a now infamous speech.
“Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest,” Mr Dozsa shouted.
“What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal?”

Horse's amazing rescue after falling into septic tank and getting stuck
https://au.news.yahoo.com/horses-amazin ... 26330.html
Fire crews have battled to free a horse who fell through the lid of a septic tank in western Sydney.
The 16-year-old gelding named Trooper fell into the tank after his hind legs tipped the lid at the front of a Berkshire Park property, about 60 kilometres north west of Sydney on Monday.
Half submerged in sewage, it took more than two hours and a forklift to get the horse out of the thick sludge.
“With the help of the SES and RFS, we put slings around the horse and was able to lift it out,” Bob Mey of Fire and Rescue NSW said.
The local veterinarian was also there to help.
“I just had to assess him and sedate him so that he doesn’t injure himself any further while he’s stuck in the hole,” Veterinarian Laura Lee said.
His owner was relieved to free his horse.
“He was upset, he wasn’t happy,” Owner Aaron Maher said.
“No one would be happy if they were stuck like that.”
Trooper suffered mainly superficial injuries but eventually got back on his feet.
He was decontaminated by the fire brigade and is now being taken to the vet for an X-ray on his back.

Warning after man dies from eating five-day-old pasta
https://au.news.yahoo.com/warning-man-d ... 43691.html
You may want to rethink your love of leftovers after a 20-year-old man died from eating five-day-old pasta.
A man known as AJ, from Brussels in Belgium, ate leftover spaghetti with tomato sauce that had been left for five days at room temperature, according to research published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
After the meal, AJ became ill, suffering abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhoea.
He drank some water, fell asleep and was found dead the following morning.
An autopsy showed he was killed by food poisoning from a bacteria called bacillus cereus.
You Tube commentator Bernard, who claims to be a Clinical Adjunct Professor from the University of Illinois, has explained AJ’s case via his YouTube channel Chubbyemu.
He explains that AJ had hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar, due to issues with his liver caused by the pasta.
“Typically, food poisoning just causes stomach inflammation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea,” Bernard says.
“It doesn’t typically cause acute liver failure.”
While Bernard explains how the bacteria formed and how AJ’s body broke down, he adds there was a “final link to this case” that doesn’t come from the pasta.
Bernard claims AJ drank a full bottle of stomach medicine to combat his illness after he became sick.
He says the medicine contained bismuth subsalicylate, commonly known as aspirin.
“Aspirin overdoses also result in liver failure,” he says.
Bernard says the aspirin leads to a build up of fatty acid and glucose inside the liver.
“So, adding this medicine overdose to cereulide poisoning resulted in a dual blockade,” he says.
He adds AJ’s case is a “tragic one” and there have been many cases of people eating pasta or leftover noodles but ending up fine.
But Bernard says it’s best to avoid eating food which “smells funny” and that “it’s always better to be safe than sorry”.

I remember my Dad, who came up a rough way, saying at least in prison there were three hots, and a cot (3 hot meals and a place to sleep).
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

World War One grenade among potatoes at Hong Kong crisp factory
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-47107609
A World War One-era German hand grenade has been found among a delivery of potatoes shipped from France to a crisp factory in Hong Kong, police say.
The muddy device, which was 3in (8cm) wide, was "in an unstable condition" because it had been discharged but had failed to detonate, officials said.
It was discovered at the Calbee crisp-making factory in the eastern Sai Kung district on Saturday morning.
The bombe de terre was safely detonated on site by bomb disposal officers.
"All the information to date suggests that the grenade was imported from France together with the other potatoes," Superintendant Wong Ho-hon told reporters.
He added that the device was defused using a "high-pressure water firing technique".
It is believed to have been dug up accidentally with potatoes planted in a field in France before being exported.
"The grenade was likely to have been left behind, dropped by soldiers there during the war, or left there after it was thrown," Dave Macri, a military historian, told the South China Morning Post.
Last year, thousands of people were forced to evacuate a busy commercial area of Hong Kong while police defused a "severely damaged" World War Two bomb found on a construction site.
It was the second to be found in Hong Kong within the same week.

Man dies after e-cigarette explodes in his face
https://au.news.yahoo.com/man-dies-e-ci ... 48792.html
A man has been killed just days shy of his 25th birthday after an e-cigarette exploded in his face.
William Brown, from Fort Worth in Texas, was using the device in the car park outside a vaping shop in the nearby town of Keller on January 27, when it exploded.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office says shrapnel from the explosion severed his left carotid artery and peppered his skull. He went into cardiac arrest and died two days later.
The 24-year-old’s grandmother Alice Brown said he was placed in a medically induced coma and that X-rays showed that part of the e-cigarette was lodged in his throat.
“That three-piece thing went into his throat and stayed there,” Ms Brown told KTVT.
“That went across his lip, apparently somehow, and cut his lip.”
She added he had only just bought the device and was using it for the first time.
“He had a future ahead of him; a life ahead of him,” she added.
A similar incident also killed a Florida man last May, when 38-year-old Tallmadge D’Elia of St Petersburg died after his exploding vape pen sent two fragments into his skull.
He also suffered burns on about 80 percent of his body. The death was ruled an accident.

Old dog who misses his dad learns to cuddle dummy
https://au.news.yahoo.com/old-dog-misse ... 05429.html
A dog owner whose pooch has separation anxiety has introduced a dummy to keep the little canine happy.
Marc Peralta’s dog Shorty “barks and cries and just cannot calm down” whenever he’s away, Vintage Pet Rescue wrote on Facebook last week.
Mr Peralta works for the shelter in the US state of Massachusetts and according to The Dodo’s news website has had Shorty for 11 years.
Unfortunately, Shorty’s old age means the pug can’t move around as well as he used to and needs to spend more time around the house. He also doesn’t take his owner leaving very well.
Mr Peralta’s wife Kristen told The Dodo the dog won’t settle down even if he’s held by someone else.
“He just wants his dad,” Mrs Peralta told the publication.
She tried to calm the pooch by creating a figure of his likeness out of pillows and dressing the pile in his clothes but the dog saw right through it.
Mrs Peralta then decided to buy a life size dummy from a Halloween store and dress it in her husband’s clothes.
The dummy has a shirt, baseball cap and even fake sleeve tattoos for Mr Peralta’s likeness.
The shelter included photos of the dog lying in the dummy’s arms.
“Shorty has been calm for the last hour,” the shelter wrote on Facebook.
“Marc is a little upset that he is so easily replaced but I told him not to worry. The dummy is not nearly as handsome or as smart as he is.”
Shorty ended up sleeping through the night cuddling the dummy. Many Facebook users loved the idea with one calling it “genius”.
“I want to make one of myself for my puppies,” one woman wrote.

Hilarious reaction after 'hero' cleans up after litter bug driver on Aussie road
https://au.news.yahoo.com/hilarious-rea ... 55080.html
An unlikely “hero” has been “praised” online for cleaning up after a driver on an Aussie road.
Magnus Hand uploaded a video onto the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page after he caught a woman littering while stopped in traffic in Perth.
“So I was at the lights and this poor lady’s cigarette accidentally fell out of her hand and onto the road,” the post said.
“Being the gentleman I am, I got out, picked up the cig and kindly returned it to her.”
The video shows Mr Hand getting out of his car after the woman drops her cigarette. He walks over to her window, bends down and picks up the cigarette and thrusts it back at her through the window before walking back to his car.
Many people commenting on the video online joked the man was a “hero” and should be dubbed “Australian of the Year”.
“Not all heroes wear capes … Some waddle around like a duck” one said.
“Wish we had of seen her face … Priceless! This guy is a legend,” another commented.
Others claimed they had also dobbed in drivers who had thrown cigarette butts out the window and smokers gave suggestions as to what drivers could use as ashtrays, including a can in the cupholder.
“You have now inspired others,” one said of the man’s actions.
“So thoughtful of you. I’m sure she was appreciative for you returning this ciggie.”
And then the PC Brigade chips in:
But others savaged the man for the “heroic” act, calling him self-righteous.
Herald Sun columnist Susie O’Brien told Sunrise it was dangerous.
“If the cigarette was lit you can’t really throw that back into a car,” she said.
“This actually kind of gives me the creeps because when you have strangers trying to teach each other a lesson – this kind of vigilante justice does not sit well with me, it can be really dangerous.”

'We have a Code Brown': Police fine Melbourne taxi driver caught pooing on nature strip
https://au.news.yahoo.com/code-brown-po ... 23189.html
A taxi driver has been fined $645 for doing his business on a suburban nature strip in Melbourne’s northeast – an act that left police “dumbfounded”.
The hefty fine was issued to a 27-year-old cabbie who police say they caught making a gross and public deposit at Chirnside Park in the early hours of last Monday morning.
The driver, who came “pre-armed” with toilet paper, was handed an evidence bag to collect his own deposit, before night patrol officers slapped him with a $645 “poo ticket” for the offence.
“We have a Code Brown. I repeat, we have a Code Brown,” a post on the Yarra Ranges police Eyewatch Facebook page read, accompanying a picture of the infringement notice.
The picture shows the fine was issued for: ‘Obs[erve] male taxi driver defecate on nature strip roadside’.
“Rounding a bend with the high beams on, the members came across their own full moon, observing a 27-year-old taxi driver doing his business over the nature strip and footpath,” the post explained.
“Needless to say this behaviour is not tolerated and any future offenders will be prosecuted.
“Surely we don’t need to issue a warning reminding people not to do this.”
