Clean Hua Hin's beaches movement - Trash Hero

A very interesting topic and excellent reporting, all of you are doing an outstanding job!

I have two questions:

1. What approximate proportion of beach rubbish is brought in by the tide versus dropped by beach goers?

2. What is the approximate mix of Thai versus expat individuals within the beach cleaners? I ask this second question because In general terms I find the amount of rubbish strewn around the town appalling.
Thais, in general, seem indifferent to these matters and I wonder what efforts are made by the municipality to increase awareness and operate street cleaners on a permanent basis? Equally, and given the poor tourist numbers, what contribution are hoteliers and restauranters making to improve the situation? Prior to moving here we visited Hua Hin several times and I recall thinking if we moved here where we would live and frequent would be influenced by litter.

I will give you my opinion, which is most definitely my personal opinion.

I walk the beach fairly regularly, and I would estimate the % of rubbish brought in by the tide is about 90% - the sea is full!!! This opinion is not just from what I see on popular beaches, but by what I see washed ashore on remote beaches, devoid of sunbathers/swimmers.

Until recently, I would say the Heroes have been about 80% Farangs. However, to their credit, I have noticed a team from Bluport helping out (I don't know if Bluport are paying their team - credit to Bluport if they are), and visiting universities often get their hands dirty.

The above paints the average Thai in a bad light, but I do see teams of Thais doing their own rubbish collections, and I know my granddaughters are occasionally taken to the beach by their school to do rubbish collection.

As for local businesses. beach care varies. I have always been impressed at how well Intercontinental care for their beachfront - usually after most people have gone home, and working under floodlights.

A few years ago after doing my own personal pick-up, I noticed that the beach outside the Amari was disgusting, full of trash. I was at a Rotary meeting at the hotel about a week later and mentioned it to the manager. From that time on the beach has been perfectly clean.

And another thought. BB is correct. I only do water-line pick up and you can tell by much of the junk that it has been dumped from a boat.

What Amari are you talking about? I only know the one in Takiap and that's not on the beach. I'd be interested to know if there's another?

Using reusable collection sacks kindly donated by Thai Life Insurance team, 42 Heroes, including the Bluport team in dark blue, the Thai Life Insurance team and 1 child set about clearing the North Takiab Beach in the vicinity of the Standing Buddha. Between them, they collected 45 Kg of rubbish, making the area a lot nicer fir everybody.

This Sunday 10 March, the Heroes will be meeting at the end of Soi Hua Hin 55 at 4pm.

All Heroes, both old and new will be very welcome.

24 Heroes, including a team from Bluport and a team of students from Hua Hin International School, picked up 65 Kg. from the area around Hua Hin Fish Pier area yesterday afternoon. A large volume of plastic trash, which was not heavy.

There were some new kids on the block today, literally. Teachers, students and parents from Sanuk Svenska Skolan became Heroes for the day when they did a clean at the South Takiab Beach.

It really humbles us to see the trash these little Heroes were clearing, that had clearly been left behind by 'responsible adults'. I hope those 'responsible adults' feel really proud of themselves leaving such dangerous waste for people to relax amongst.

All of the children were rewarded with a Trash Hero Hua Hin kid's book, and were given a lecture on reduction of single use plastic.

As usual, a really great job by teachers, students and parents - thank you very much, each and every one of you.

This coming Sunday, 17th March at 4pm, the Heroes will be meeting at the end of Soi 85( Soi Kokmoo).

All Heroes both old and new will be very welcome.

45 kg. removed by 36 volunteers. We found a lot of plastic/foil confetti on the beach and it was hard to take it out from the sand. Thank you Michelle who ran all the way to Bluport to get the baskets so our work was a bit easier.

35 volunteers collected 85 kg. of trash from the Hua Hin - Pattaya Ferry area at Khao Takiab. A lot of plastic and broken glass was removed from the beach. Great effort everyone!

NB: This week's clean-up is Saturday, not Sunday.

Tomorrow, Saturday 30th March, the Heroes will be on duty at Navyphirom, which is situated at the end of Hua Hin Soi 53 at 4pm.

We are joining up with the 'Bye bye plastic bags Chiang Mai group' as well as many other groups around the country.

22 Heroes, including our regular Bluport team and some young tourists from Bangkok joined the cleaning last Saturday. Between us, we cleared 40 kg trash from the beach.
