Well we certainly had a brief but very heavy downpour with extremely strong winds about 5.30 late afternoon today - probably about 2 cms in total, but it was the wind that was surprising - I was half expecting some of our trees to come down, but fortunately they survived

We've had rain in Hua Na (112/4/6) but it was more like 'UK drizzle'. Certainly no wind etc.

In the last couple of hours there has been a big buildup of towering CB clouds over Bangkok, but no rain.
But this weather is coming in from the east because of a big low over southern China. It is not from any SW Monsoon.

Some "proper" SW Monsoon clouds and light rain in Bangkok this morning. There is still a big high pressure area over southern China that is blocking any further buildup, despite the hopes of the Thai Met Dept.

And in the sub continent they are not to plurry sure:

Southwest monsoon to regain pulse in two days; IMD predicts strong winds, increasing rain over Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Department (IMD) predicted that the weather conditions are progressing for its further advance into some more parts of the south Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands and north Andaman Sea between 29 and 30 May.

According to IMD, this year, the monsoon in Kerala is expected to be delayed and has set 6 June as the day of onset while, private forecaster Skymet Weather has advanced it by two days to 4 June, The Tribune reported.

Supposed rare weather phenomenon creates aurora-like glow in M'sian sky

PETALING JAYA — Bangsar residents were stopped in their tracks recently after they spotted an unusual phenomenon in the sky.

Several Facebook users in “The Republic of Bangsar #TROB” group shared pictures of the visual spectacle that occurred on the evening of May 28.

The photos show thick clouds with aurora-like lights peeking out from behind, creating a bright burst of colour in the sky.

Group member Michael Liew suggested that the event might have been a crown flash, a rare weather phenomenon caused by sunlight reflecting or refracting off small ice crystals in the clouds.

“Blessed that I managed to witness this elusive and majestic phenomenon. Mother Nature is truly amazing,” he wrote.

Several users took to the comments section to share their own pictures taken at different locations.

“Was driving back from Kajang (and I was) awestruck by its beauty,” said another member Gaithri Selvarajah.

“I saw it as well, (it) was gorgeous. Seemed like the heavens were opening,” Mark Simon wrote.

Prior to the emergence of mobile phone cameras, crown flashes were considered to be a rarely documented event.

Several videos of the display happening all over the world have since popped up on YouTube over the last decade, making them easier to track and study.

Saw a similar thing a week or two ago in the centre of town.

I've seen the above several times whilst living here. Sometimes quite spectacular.

I remember sat having a beer in the town when a large halo was formed around the sun giving the impression of it being much bigger. Locals were dropping to their knees and praying!

Gentle good garden rain in the east all afternoon. From what I see on radar it may get a bit more fierce tonight. God help me as we have an older Golden Retriever who freaks out at the flash of lightening and clap of thunder. Howling imminent :( :banghead:

Monsoon 2019 Live Updates: Authorities Confirm Onset of Monsoon in Kerala

They're dancing in the streets there. :D We should now see a steady increase in rain frequency here as well.

Note: No "Floods of 2019" thread yet. Hopefully not needed this year, but we'll see....?

Erm. It is not surprising that the Thai Met Dept. get it wrong so often.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Why it so often rains during Bangkok's evening rush-hour

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Ever wonder why rain always seems to hit Bangkok just when you are about to go home after work? The Meteorological Department has an explanation.

Department official Wuttipong Nubanjong on Monday said clouds that produce rain gather strength from moisture and sunlight over the Andaman Sea in the morning. They grow bigger as the southwesterly winds in the rainy season blow them to the mainland.

Rain normally starts in western provinces including Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi early in the afternoon. When they move further inland they accumulate more moisture along the path, the official explained.
(Really, must be because of all the dams they pass over!)

By the time the rainclouds reach Bangkok, it is late afternoon in the capital, he said, adding accumulated moisture sometimes turned into downpours.(what actually happens is that the city heats up causing rising convection currents that lift the moist cool air flow up until the water vapour condenses and falls as rain.)

"Bangkok is in the path of the southwesterly wind," Mr Wuttipong said. "It's a pattern in the rainy season."
How soon rain hits Bangkok depends on wind speeds, according to the official. "A faster speed means rain in the afternoon from 3pm and a slower speed means rain in the evening," he said.(actually, stronger wind speeds mean more water vapour is in the cool air blowing in from the ocean)

Bangkok was flooded on Friday after a two-hour downpour in the afternoon. It paralysed traffic in the capital and commuters had to wait for hours for public transport to go home.

Suffering commuters directed their anger at Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang, blaming him for poor preparations of flood-prevention measures.

The governor posted a Facebook message on Saturday apologising to people for the "inconvenience" but said he was working with his staff at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's command centre to drain floodwaters from Bangkok streets.

"Why wasn't I more hands-on, going out on the streets [to direct workers to drain floodwater]? Allow me to explain. I decided to follow the situation at the centre so I could get the big picture and better solve the problem," he said.
The rainy season this year officially began on May 20.

The weather agency on Monday predicted rain and heavy rain in Bangkok on Monday and Tuesday, again between the late afternoon and early evening. (and as at 4-30pm there is some cloud build up, which will more than likely do what it did yesterday, and just blow right over because the wind speeds are still not strong enough)
