Loud bangs were heard near a skytrain station and at least three other areas in Bangkok on Friday morning, with two people confirmed injured on Rama 9 Road.

Police reported loud sound similar to bomb explosions twice at the Chong Nonsi BTS station about 8.50am and closed exits 3 and 4 for safety reasons.

Police also cordoned off the ground near the two exits to examine the cause of the bang.

A Twitter message showed a sheet of glass on the station platform was shattered.

Police also reported loud bangs in Soi 57/1 on Rama 9 road, injuring two city road cleaners at 8.50am, one loud bang outside King Power Mahanakhon Building near the same BTS station at 9am and three bangs near the Government Complex on Chaeng Wattana Road at the same time.

Explosive Ordnance disposal police are at the scene.
In a tweet at 11.12am, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha condemned those behind the bombing and wrote he had already ordered those responsible to protect the people and take care of affected people in a tweet at 11.12am.

Bangkok road briefly closed amid bomb fears

Police temporarily closed the inbound section of Rama I Road outside their headquarters on Thursday after a security camera captured a man dropping a suspicious object at the fence.

Traffic police radio reported the closure of the section of Rama I Road near the Royal Thai Police head office to check a suspicious object at around 5.30pm.

Bomb disposal officers were called into the area to handle the situation as the roadblock caused traffic congestions on other roads, it said.
The roadblock ended an hour later after police confirmed that the object was not a bomb, it added.

Fleeing suspects arrested after dummy bomb left at police HQ

Two men suspected of dropping a suspicious object outside the Royal Thai Police head office on Rama I Road in Bangkok on Thursday evening were apprehended on an interprovincial bus at a checkpoint in Chumphon early on Friday. They denied any involvement.

Police arrested the two men at Pathomporn checkpoint on Phetchakasem Road in tambon Wang Pai, Muang district of the southern province around 2am. They were on board a southern-bound interprovincial bus.

Bangkok police on Thursday temporarily closed the inbound section of Rama I Road outside the RTP headquarters after a security camera captured a man dropping a suspicious object at the fence.

Bomb disposal officers called to the area examined the object, which contained two cylinder-shaped boxes stuffed with electrical circuit boards. There was no explosive. The boxes were destroyed and the roadblock lifted an hour later.

Police examined CCTV footage and decided two men were involved. The first man was tasked with watching the area nearby while the other man was seen placing the suspicious object at the fence.

The pair were seen meeting at a skywalk of the BTS skytrain at Siam station before entering a nearby shopping mall, where they changed clothes.

They later travelled by taxi to Chatuchak park, and from there took another taxi to Morchit 2 bus terminal. They changed clothes again in a toilet at the bus terminal before taking a bus to the South, Thai media reported.

During police interrogation, the two men kept denying any involvement, but police were not convinced. The investigation is continuing.

A series of loud bangs were heard in the Rama 9 area of Bangkok on Friday morning, and two street cleaners were confirmed injured.

Bombs rattle Bangkok during Asean summit

https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/17234 ... ean-summit

At least two small bombs exploded in Bangkok on Friday morning, injuring three people, as the city hosted a regional summit also attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha was told of "the bombing incidents and has ordered an immediate investigation", government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said, adding "security measures have been tightened. The public is urged not to panic".

Two women street cleaners were injured by one explosion in a soi off Rama 9 Road, the Erawan Emergency Centre told AFP.
A second explosion shattered glass near a downtown skyscraper, emergency police said.

Bomb disposal experts were deployed around the Mahanakorn Tower -- owned by the King Power group that counts Leicester City football club among its assets.

A message posted on the prime minister's Facebook on Friday said, “I condemn the mastermind behind this morning’s bomb blasts, which destroy people and the country’s image. I have asked officials to beef up security for members of the public and take urgent care of those affected by the explosions.’’

"Security measures have been tightened. The public is urged not to panic," government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said.

Small devices -- believed to be "ping pong bombs" about the size of a table tennis ball -- exploded at several locations across the city.

Small devices -- believed to be "ping pong bombs" about the size of a table tennis ball -- exploded at several locations across the city.

They appeared to be symbolic attacks aimed at embarrassing the government during the major summit but not designed to cause mass casualties.

"Three people received slight injuries from shrapnel," said Renu Suesattaya, director of Suanluang district, where the first explosions were reported.

"I received a report that they are 'ping pong bombs' hidden in bushes by the road."

"We do not know yet how many people are involved," Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon told reporters, adding that "people who do it want to stir the situation".

The bombings took place just before a keynote speech by Pompeo, who is attending the meeting of Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers.

The government urged the media to avoid speculation on the motive for the bombings.

Chaos in capital as bombings stir worries

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ir-worries

Damage and injuries minimal but government's image takes a beating during high-profile Asean event

Bangkok was plunged into chaos on Friday after a series of bombings put citizens and authorities alike on alert for unattended objects. Damage and injuries were minimal but the timing of the incidents, during a high-profile Asean meeting, suggested embarrassing the government was the aim.

The incidents occurred on the same day that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha made his first visit to the Royal Thai Police head office, which he has pledged to oversee directly.

Every move by the perpetrators and every response by security authorities attracted extra attention from a large foreign media corps in the capital to cover a meeting of Asean foreign ministers. They were joined by many other senior diplomats including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

The internet was soon alight with rumours and speculation, which authorities moved quickly to dispel. For a start, they, said, no areas of the city had been closed.

As for the identity of the perpetrators, army chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong said the usual suspects were involved, without naming names. He was believed to be referring to red-shirt sympathisers loyal to fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The trouble began on Thursday afternoon when two men were spotted dropping a suspicious object outside the police headquarters on Rama I Road. A police source said on Friday that it was a bomb set to go off at 8am that morning.

The pair were arrested in Chumphon province on Friday.

Seven bombs in all were reported in five locations in Bangkok and Nonthaburi on Friday, with five of them going off, hurting three people. The blasts included one at the Chong Nonsi BTS station, the Government Complex on Chaeng Watthana Road, and the Royal Thai Armed Forces headquarters.

Also targeted was the King Power MahaNakhon tower near the Chong Nonsi station. King Power is a major backer of the Bhumjaithai Party, one of the partners in the coalition government.

At least three suspicious objects were reported, including a box placed under an escalator at the Silom BTS station on Friday morning, and a bag left unattended at a bus stop on Phahon Yothin Road during rush hour.

Gen Prayut, the Royal Thai Army and political parties, including the opposition Pheu Thai, all condemned the acts.

The explosives sparked a rumour about a plan to declare the capital a security area but Maj Gen Thanathip Sawangsaeng, a spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command, bluntly denied it. “Please do not panic,” he said.

I'm really surprised these events are not getting more coverage.

Incidents at 11 sites keep City Hall on high alert

I've seen the video of one of these later reported incidents, and there's quite a fire raging, with secondary explosions caused by electric cables catching alight. There's a lot of people around and there's a lot of panic - understandably.
