The artwork, titled Comedian, by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, was on display at the international gallery Perrotin at Art Basel in Miami.

Three buyers bought the limited-edition pieces of the banana art this week.

But performance artist David Datuna pulled it from the wall, peeled it and devoured it on Saturday.

"Art performance by me. I love Maurizio Cattelan artwork and I really love this installation. It's very delicious," Mr Datuna posted on Instagram.

Despite the initial anger of a member of staff, the banana was swiftly replaced and no further action will be taken.

The art reportedly comes with a certificate of authenticity, meaning owners can replace the banana.

"[Datuna] did not destroy the art work. The banana is the idea," Lucien Terras, a director at the gallery, told the Miami Herald.

Police were later deployed to guard the replacement banana.

Art Basel is one of the world's most high-profile contemporary art fairs.
The world really has gone "bananas"! :duck:

'This is dystopia': Bizarre reason for new 'slanted toilets' appearing in offices

https://au.news.yahoo.com/this-is-dysto ... 54818.html

The days of texting and checking social media on your phone while on a work toilet break could soon be coming to an end.

A new toilet designed in the UK aims to combat “extended employee breaks” by providing a slanted seat at an intentionally uncomfortable angle.

StandardToilet said its unique design “offers the ability to increase business efficiency and profits through reductions in social media usage”.

It can be angled between 8 to 13 degrees.

“It is estimated that in the United Kingdom alone, extended employee breaks costs industry and commerce an estimated £4 billion ($A7.5 billion) per annum,” it said in a statement.

The company claims not only will its design see workers sitting on the john less, but it will see a decrease in queuing at public restrooms and has a number of health benefits.

Typical toilets “can cause swollen haemorrhoids and weakening of pelvic muscles”, according to StandardToilet, which cited the UK’s National Health Service and Harvard Medical School.

While the health benefits may sound appealing the toilets haven’t proved popular on Twitter.
One man claims he installed one in his guest bathroom and said the toilet is “tremendously uncomfortable”.

Other people questioned the design and what it meant for people with Crohn’s disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
“This is a dystopia,” one woman tweeted.

The toilet’s designer Mahabir Gill told the BBC his inspiration for the new loo came from a personal experience.
He told the network he was waiting to use the bathroom at a truck stop with a large queue. He noticed people coming out of the lavatory holding phones.

Mr Gill said at 11 degrees the seat becomes uncomfortable after 15 minutes and at 13 degrees the maximum seated time is between five to seven minutes.

It's articles like this that simply make me want to give up on this place forever. Is it that these "activists" don't have enough to do, are they jobless and unemployable, are they mentally incapable of rational thought? It's like the official in the article some months ago who said that Thai university students are "different and not as mentally mature..." as their western counterparts therefore selling or consuming alcoholic beverages on campus would be a disaster. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Leave the people and the youth alone to make their own decisions about their own lives you F'ing self righteous morons!!

Activists warn over 'claw crane' perils

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ane-perils

Youth advocates and activists have called on the government to enforce a ban on arcade "claw crane" machines which they say are defined in law as gambling tools targeting youngsters.

The machines are installed in large numbers in department stores throughout the country and young people have unrestricted access to them, according to Nutthapong Sampaokaew, coordinator of the No Gambling Youth Club.

Speaking at a forum in Bangkok yesterday, Mr Nutthapong said the question on people's minds was whether the service the machines offer constitutes gambling.

He said the Gambling Act categorises the machines as serving a betting purpose, a definition confirmed in a Supreme Court ruling. However, the machines operate freely at department stores and attract many youngsters.

The coin-operated machines are popular with young customers keen on working a crane claw to pick from among a pile of dolls inside a glass display case. Mr Nutthapong said authorities have no policy to licence operation of the machines.

The club has surveyed 92 department stores in 10 provinces including Bangkok. It found more than 1,300 machines are in place at 75 stores.

"The machines are located in areas where shoppers frequently pass through and there's no age restriction for customers," he said.

Mr Nutthapong added some operators intended to mislead people by putting up a sign that describes the machines as "automatic vending machines".

In a questionnaire the club distributed to people aged 15 and over, 80% said they have played the machines although more half of them admitted they did not know the service was against the law.

The authorities should enforce a ban on the machines and educate people not to engage in games of gambling nature, he said, adding the stores can also help by removing the machines from their premises.

Supapit Chaidit, chairwoman of the Children and Youth Council of Thailand, said the claw crane machines fit the definition of gambling because they require customers to place money to bet on the chance of getting something in return, in this case a doll.

Thanakorn Komkrit, secretary-general of the Stop-gambling Foundation, said if the machines were allowed to operate, they must come under tighter regulations including restricting access to those aged 20 and above. Former senator Rosana Tositrakul said the issue should prompt the government to root out gambling activities.

The claw crane machines drive young people to take chances and could lead to gambling addiction when they grow up, she said.

Activists warn over 'claw crane' perils
Oh most definitely ban them! The fact that a lot of kids go to shopping centres riding motorbikes both without a licence or a helmet, will ensure that those not killed, or poisoned by the pollution, don't grow up and become gamblers completely eludes these idiiots.

Sounds like they were describing Thai education; "place money to bet on the chance of getting something in return."

I was almost jailed for carrying the stuff!! Unbeknown to me, a "gift of munchies" was put in my suitcase as a surprise. A surprise it was indeed going through customs in Iran (years ago). As a strict Muslim country, they weren't well impressed!!

Was watching CNN this morning and the story came up with Hawaii's love of SPAM! Had never heard of this before, so had to do the search.

According to the SPAM website, Hawaii's love affair with SPAM began in World War II, when the salty luncheon meat was given to squaddies due to its very long shelf life and lack of refrigeration needs. (SPAM is canned and has a shelf-life of approximately a trillion years) - Pretty sure Nereus can comment here :D :?

The search came up with an interesting one from the Guardian: -

I remember (fondly) spam and pickle sandwiches as well as spam, egg and chips. I’m sure we even had deep fried spam fritters - how healthy could that have been?

My son's wife does wonderful spam fritters. Unfortunately, I'm assuming it's because of this pig problem, spam is no longer on the shelves.
