If you are one of those waiting for the chance to climb Khao Lom Muak, which boasts one of the best views of Prachuap Khiri Khan's coastline, you had better get yourself ready. Wing 53 Air Base, on which the 300m-tall seaside hill is located, will allow the public to do so from tomorrow until March 1, coinciding with the province's annual tourism and Red Cross fairs.

During the period, visitors can enter the air base from 6-10.30am. Before climbing, everybody is required to register and have their blood pressure checked. It is recommended that one arrive as early as possible in order to reach the top before the Sun gets too strong.

From the bottom, climbers must first make their way up the 496-step stairway. After that, they will have to continue on a trail that gets steeper and steeper. In the final part, they will have to scale a cliff of sharp limestone.

The vista from the hilltop makes all the effort worthwhile. Down below, visitors can see the Gulf of Thailand, nearby islets, the bays along the shoreline, and the city of Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Apart from decent fitness, each climber should have drinking water, gloves to protect the hands from sharp rocks, and proper shoes. Flip-flops are not allowed, for safety reason.

By noon, every climber will be required to leave.

Later in the afternoon, after taking some rest, visitors can go experience the grand fairs which take place in front of the city hall not so far away. There, one can enjoy delicious seafood, local delicacies, handicrafts and various other products, as well as a variety of entertainment, from concerts and other stage performances to games and amusement rides.

The city of Prachuap Khiri Khan is about 290km south of Bangkok. Public transportation that can take you there includes buses and trains.

In case you miss this chance, the next time Khao Lom Muak will be open is during Songkran.
