<then the BS started. laser had misunderstood - he was quoted a price for straightforward copy, not scan. >

No... the guy, after a while, understood that I asked for *scanning only*, rather than making a printed copy. The latter involves both scanning and printing. Scanning only to a pdf obviously saves the paper+printing costs, involves about half of the job. It should be cheaper than making photocopy, in theory.

I'm not doubting your word - I've been scammed before

Seriously, if I get a printed copy as well, it'll save us printing a copy. Even at 3฿/page, it is still not expensive if the quality is good.

Well, what can I say? "Wow!" is about the only appropriate word.

We went back at 6 as requested. The book was sat on the desk. The guy looked at me and said, "1.5฿ a page, is that OK?" As I'd agreed 3฿ a page, there was no argument from me. He handed me the stick, requested my e-mail and asked for 485฿ (included 135฿ for the stick and 20฿ to e-mail it to me as well). The file was too large to e-mail, so I actually paid 465฿.

I did not check the file whilst at the shop. That would have to wait until I returned home.

You have to remember, I was actually happy with some of the pages I had scanned using Bluesky's device the previous day. Well, there was no comparison, my efforts yesterday were very amateurish. The shop have done a brilliant job. Big thanks to laser for suggesting them. The results are almost perfect.

I have always been surprised by the number of old books already scanned by libraries and collectors. I know you said it was not available digitally, did you check the repository at books.google.com?

I hadn't tried that route, but just have, and this was returned:

Does that mean it was available or not?

We had found it listed on several sites, but were unable to buy it.

Amazon is one of the places claiming to have the books, but nothing ever arrived.

Yes I noticed on your post, but you referred to Amazon.com (US) and not Amazon.co.uk - the latter being UK sellers, so perhaps this is the difference?

[EDIT] It's sellers registered with Amazon selling the book, and not Amazon itself.

Anyway, best of luck, hope all gets sorted. :thumb:

BB The exact picture Pharvey shows comes up when I look too (Don't know how to do screen shots). Shows a couple used available for $27.44 usd and new for $92.31.

I'm in the states until April 25 and happy to order, and bring back for you.

Thank you very much migrant, but the problem has been resolved. The original book has been donated to the martial arts club for reference, and the original owner is happy to retain the electronic version on a stick, such was the quality of the scanned book.

So job complete, and everybody is happy.

A big thank you everybody who has helped, especially laser, whose suggestion was the final solution, and one that I had certainly not considered.
