My apologies.

372,000 infected.

17,000 dead.

Going to get a bit worse b4 it seems normal again.

If not contained, these figures can DOUBLE every 3 days. Double.

Look at the math for if those figures doubled another few times before 'squashing the curve'. We're looking at a world changer here. But...

I do think it has been taken seriously and contained.

I wondered why there is such little news out of Russia ... this explains a little:

Why does Russia, population 146 million, have fewer coronavirus cases than Luxembourg?
https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/21/euro ... index.html

...

Russia's early response measures -- such as shutting down its 2,600-mile border with China as early as January 30, and setting up quarantine zones -- may have contributed to the delay of a full-blown outbreak, some experts say.

"The director-general of WHO said 'test, test, test,'" Dr. Melita Vujnovic, the World Health Organization's representative in Russia, told CNN Thursday. "Well, Russia started that literally at the end of January.

Vujnovic said Russia also took a broader set of measures in addition to testing.

"Testing and identification of cases, tracing contacts, isolation, these are all measures that WHO proposes and recommends, and they were in place all the time," she said. "And the social distancing is the second component that really also started relatively early."

...

Testing appears to be the key and Thailand is going to be screwed by keeping the border open and expecting everyone to pay for the test.

Thailand, given the system, is gonna be a scary place to live in a month. No welfare handouts. No safety nets. No plan b.

Apparently the government has ordered the closure of all national parks. Article from the Standard (in Thai) here: Closure of National Parks in Thailand

We had planned a four day dive trip to the North Andaman next week. Although we have not yet heard from the company, we have seen that at least one other dive boat has cancelled all trips until further notice.

[Please feel free to move this if it belongs elsewhere.}

Even more so if this starts to happen ...

Thailand increasingly blaming caucasians for coronavirus crisis
As the global epicentre of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic shifts from China to Europe, racism is not far behind, least of all here in the virus-hit kingdom of Thailand.

With new restrictions on inbound travellers now in place, including mandatory health certificates and proof of health insurance, caucasians (white skinned westerners aka. ‘farang’) are increasingly being blamed for the country’s growing outbreak.

...

Tourists and expats have expressed fear that the health minister’s anti-Western messages could spark racist attacks against them in the street.

The sudden rise of anti-Caucasian racism follows an earlier surge of anti-China sentiment when the virus first appeared in Thailand in January. Then, Thai officials tried to repress, rather than stoke the xenophobia.

Knowing this country I can see them refusing to treat farangs and prioritizing their own.

What worries me: If ventilators suddenly become scarce, how much priority will a 70 year old farang get? I fully expect to die if I get this disease and it becomes serious enough to requite hospitalization.

It's already happening in the States maybe in part because Trump insists on calling it The Chinese Virus

US President Donald Trump - under fire for labelling Covid-19 the "Chinese virus" - has said Asian Americans should not be blamed for the outbreak.

He said it is "very important that we totally protect" Asian Americans, whom he praised as "amazing people".

Mr Trump spoke out amid rising reports of verbal and physical attacks on the community amid the pandemic.

Coronavirus is still spreading in the US, which currently has over 43,000 confirmed cases and 533 deaths.

At a White House coronavirus task force news conference on Monday, Mr Trump said: "It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States and all around the world.

Don't really care what Trump does in the States, most of us live in Thailand and will be directly affected by what happens here - which appears to be exhibiting darker undertones already.

January 2020 - who'd have thunk some of us wouldn't be allowed to leave the house 3 month later.
