Re: The scourge of Facebook
Well, to revert to the sentiment behind the original title of this thread: I'm not a great lover of FB and social media in general, but believe all new inventions can be used for the greater good or evil if you will. I mainly use FB to keep in touch with (distant) friends and through it have also regained contact with friends from long ago, which otherwise would most probably not have happened.
Then, a few days ago, a friend of mine became seiously ill and I had to drive him to hospital in the capital city where I know just about nobody. It turned out he needed an urgent blood transfusion, but he has a very rare blood type that was not available from the blood bank at the time. So I posted a request for blood donors across all the FB groups I am aware of in the immediate and wider area.
I was overwhelmed by the response of many people from near and far who offered their assistance and, the next morning, 3 people with this rare blood group turned up at the hospital where he is to give blood, which saved my friend's life. These were total strangers of different nationalities, solely motivated by their desire to help another person in dire circumstances.
Needless to say, my friend and myself will be eternally grateful to these selfless people for their amazing show of generosity and humanity.
A few years ago, it would have been practically unimaginable to mobilise so many people in such a short time for such a cause in a remote country.
I am not disputing that social media vehicles can be used for abusive and negative purposes, maybe it's simply a reflection of our modern-day society that there is such a propensity to complain and denigrate. Why, especially in the desparate situation the world finds itself now, can we not focus a bit more on caring and giving and social media actually make it much easier to do this?

Re: The scourge of Facebook
Agree. Thanks for pointing out the benefits of having a social media like FB. Unfortunately, those situations appear to be in the minority. However, just one story such as this one, makes it very worthwhile.

Re: The scourge of Facebook
I found my China jobs on fb. So it's been good value as well. Of course many things are irritable but so far more on the positives.

Re: The scourge of Facebook
I keep in touch with friends and relations around the world, very good for that.
Woke up this morning breathing that's a good start to the day.
Re: The scourge of Facebook
I like to stalk ex and future lovers on FB. Before FB, I had to go out and do this physically.
I don't trust children. They're here to replace us.

Connected, but at what cost?
Facebook users, randomized to deactivate their accounts for 4 weeks in exchange for $102, freed up an average of 60 minutes a day, spent more time socializing offline, became less politically polarized, and reported improved subjective well-being relative to controls.
However, the treatment group also became less knowledgeable about current events. Allcott et al. report that after the 4-week deactivation period ended, the treated subjects' Facebook use remained persistently lower than that of the controls, and treated subjects lowered the amount of compensation they would demand to deactivate their accounts for another 4 weeks.

Facebook to pay $52m to content moderators over PTSD
Facebook has agreed to pay $52m (£42m) to content moderators as compensation for mental health issues developed on the job.
The agreement settles a class-action lawsuit brought by the moderators, as first reported by The Verge.
Facebook said it is using both humans and artificial intelligence (AI) to detect posts that violate policies.
The social media giant has increased its use of AI to remove harmful content during the coronavirus lockdown.
In 2018, a group of US moderators hired by third-party companies to review content sued Facebook for failing to create a safe work environment.
The moderators alleged that reviewing violent and graphic images - sometimes of rape and suicide - for the social network had led to them developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The agreement, filed in court in California on Friday, settles that lawsuit. A judge is expected to sign off on the deal later this year...................Full story@

Re: The scourge of Facebook
Absolutely. What about some payouts to the millions of users that have had lives ruined by the thing or the thousands of web-based businesses that are no longer viable because of Facebook and the freeloading/spamming nature of it.

Re: The scourge of Facebook
Not really.
Clearly the Courts have decided that fb did have a duty or care otherwise they wouldn't have reached the findings they did.
When we created an intel team where I worked and were able to forensically examine computers, part of the package of buying the equipment and support needed, was appropriate H&S training for the two staff involved. Even hardened police officers need to have breaks from time to time, as the images and other data that might be seen can take an accumulated toll.
Talk is cheap
Re: The scourge of Facebook
Where did you get that idea that hardened cops need a break from what they've experienced, never happened in my time and it's not happening now!!caller wrote: ↑Wed May 13, 2020 3:53 pmNot really.

At age 17 as a Cadet I was tasked to the GMP Yorkshire Ripper Enquiry, basically the office tea boy/errand lad. One day I was told to collect the photo prints of the Rippers Manchester victim Jean Jordan. She'd been dead for a while, eviscerated with maggots crawling out of her body cavity. That was the first of many horrific images, decapitations after road traffic accidents, post mortems on malnutritioned babies, old folk that had died at home and basically melted in the summer heat. Images that stay with me and surface from time to time so don't tell me or other people that have served in the Services that these little office snowflakes deserve compensation for PTSD.
Gimme a break!!

Re: The scourge of Facebook
Well, what you have just written is the proof that the World has moved on from your time. Maybe you could have done with some support yourself? I was talking from personal experience with officers I knew. I guess there is only so many hours of child depravity that you can watch?

Re: The scourge of Facebook
If the world has moved on to the extent that the courts are pandering to a group of self obsessed millennials who are looking for a quick buck then go back to playing their graphically violent video games then i'm happy that I got out of the rat race when I did with my work experiences locked away in the old safety deposit box in my head, as do all my ex colleagues. No need for support but thanks for your concern.
