Could be the beginning of the end for Rugby Union on (UK) Terrestrial TV.... :( Probably a good testing ground for the (supposedly) one-off "Autumn Nations (8 Nations) Cup", but the Six Nations will be up for grabs come 2022 when it will very likely move to BT/SKY/Amazon.

I can certainly appreciate the need for a financial input into the game, but hope any deal (for the Six Nations etc.) would be set for a maximum of 3 years say and then another decision made with regards to Terrestrial TV - many, many rugby supporters could lose access.

Rugby Union Turns to Amazon Prime for Autumn Nations Cup to Boost Finances

"Rugby union’s bid to build a more sustainable financial future is set to see Amazon Prime unveiled as the broadcast partner for the new Autumn Nations Cup in November. It is also understood the streaming service is eyeing up other top rugby tournaments as the sport’s officials seek ways to increase income amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fixtures for the eight-team Autumn Nations Cup have been confirmed with Ireland to start the ball rolling against Wales in Dublin on Friday 13 November. Rather than staying faithful to its traditional roster of rugby broadcasters, the Six Nations will shortly confirm Amazon Prime has been awarded the rights."

What we don't know is if it went to Amazon whether they'd start a separate 'sport' subscription à la Sky/BT. If not, that wouldn't be a complete disaster (at £6 per month), but if so... hmm, do they still play county rugby these days...? :duck: And the BBC could probably afford village cricket and the Isthmian League football...

AUSTRALIA TO HOST TRC 2020

https://super.rugby/superrugby/news/aus ... t-trc-2020

SANZAAR has announced that The Rugby Championship 2020 will be played in Australia, in November and December this year.

All of SANZAAR’s four Member Unions (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa) will participate and the announcement follows a detailed assessment of tournament hosting submissions from New Zealand Rugby and Rugby Australia. The tournament was moved from its traditional August-September window due to the ongoing effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The Rugby Championship (TRC) matches will be played in Australia (NSW and QLD) within the recently announced World Rugby sanctioned Southern Hemisphere playing window of November 7 to December 12. The tournament will comprise a six -week, 12-match, “home and away” tournament involving Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

SANZAAR CEO Andy Marinos stated, “We are delighted that SANZAAR can, at last, confirm the participants and host country for The Rugby Championship and put an end to continued speculation about the tournaments’ format and location. Traditionally TRC is played as an international, cross-border series of home and away matches between Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa but due to the pandemic this is obviously not possible this year.”

“We have, therefore, worked very hard as a group to ensure TRC takes place this year, albeit in one country, and SANZAAR was meticulous in assessing the two options for hosting presented to it by New Zealand Rugby and Rugby Australia”.

“SANZAAR ultimately determined that based on government required quarantine protocols [for entry and training prior to the tournament] and commercial underwriting, the Rugby Australia submission was the most desirable and workable in terms of tournament logistics for the essential pre-tournament preparation period and the six-week tournament itself.”

Marinos stated that South Africa’s participation remained to be confirmed as it was dependent on several factors outside the control of SANZAAR, “The progress and impact of the pandemic has varied from country-to-country and international sporting competition is currently suspended in South Africa,” he said.

“The Springboks’ participation will be dependent on the relaxation of that suspension as well as overcoming a number of other logistical challenges including the opening of international air borders. South Africa is only expected to return to competitive play next month [October], leaving a relatively short time to prepare.”

“The TRC is one of international rugby’s biggest and prestigious tournaments and it is great to at last provide some clarity for rugby fans and the players. It would not have been possible if not for the huge contributions of our stakeholder unions, our broadcast partners as well as both the Australian (State and Federal) and New Zealand Governments for their assistance and contribution through their respective National Rugby Unions during this process. SANZAAR is now currently working through the refinement of the detailed planning with Rugby Australia and we hope to announce match venues, match dates and kick-off times in the very near future.”

“We are cognisant of the fact that the COVID pandemic environment continues to change and throw up obstacles but we are confident that our plans are robust and we will naturally build in contingency measures to suit any further changes,” added Marinos.

The "8 Nations" will be Amazon Prime and at no extra cost - they are trying to get more "Christmas Customers" - after that, and dependent on whether they get further rights.... I suspect it'll be an add-on. Come 2022 - it'll be "AMAZON 6 NATIONS"

To be fair with regards to BT, the "Sports" Add-on costs me around £8/month - BUT you must have BT to start with!

It is at the end of the day all going to go "Cable".... Sad days..

Just watching the Castleford vs Hull b4 the footy kicks off. First bit of rugby I've seen for a while. Probably mentioned already but heard the commentator mention scrums have been banned due to covid? Seems a bit bizarre. They're literally rolling about with each other the whole game but...

No scrum. Scrum bad.

Nobbled by this stupid 'minutes' rule again. Crazy, Bears have 3 games in 14 days, where as it was Wasps only game for a fortnight. However, scoring 5 tries against Wasps when fielding your reserve side was pretty credible. So yesterday's sacrifice was expected. and to come away with a bonus point was very unexpected.

Dragons beware - a totally rested Bears team are coming for you.

At the top of my page in the ads section, I keep getting offered 2021 6 Nations tickets. Just out of curiosity, I took a look.

Ireland vs England was most expensive at £466; and Italy vs France the cheapest at £89.............. really? I had to think hard about paying $9.99 for a months RugbyPass. Will people really pay that sort of money?

"Face Value" tickets are not that price - you're normally talking something like £75 - £175 dependant on the match and obviously position of your seat in the stadium - "Lahlah Land Twickers" (Rah, Rah) is strangely the most expensive, as is The Lillywhites vs Wales match (normally). I suspect you're looking at a ticket agency - which you have to be damn careful with!

Getting tickets through a club membership is very difficult, as clubs are provided with very few tickets and obviously the "hierarchy" and co. get first dibs. Therefore supporters are forced to go through other routes such as ticket vendors or package tours where supporters will always overpay.

The most I have done was £250 for two (not the best) tickets side by side - but seriously a great day out and well worth the money. Not something I do normally, so at the end of the day a "treat"! :thumb:

What was the link you followed BTW?

Also, as a matter of interest, what would a EPL match ticket cost you - say at Chelsea?

I'm 9 years away from real football, so don't know, but I'd expect something special for that king of money.
