Songkran Hua Hin 2021

Post by PeteC »

By all accounts and articles the Gov. has given the green light for celebrations this year, WITH the standard Covid precautions, social distancing etc. Good luck with that!

Social distancing for Songkran, Thailand’s New Year water festival

https://thethaiger.com/news/national/so ... r-festival

Thailand’s massive water festival Songkran, celebrating the Thai New Year, got the “okay” as long as the festivities are in line with Covid-19 prevention measures. PM Prayut Chan-o-cha says people need to abide by social distancing rules during the Songkran holiday from April 13 to 15… So make sure your water gun shoots at a long range.

For long distance water fights, the Super Soaker CPS 2000 is recommended by Wirecutter for the New York Times. They say it’s the most powerful mass-produced water gun in history, shooting at a 15-metre range at nearly a litre per second. The CPS 2000 is around $150 USD, so a more affordable option would be the plunger-style water gun from Steam Machine, which cost around $20 USD. While the Steam Machine water launchers can shoot at a range of up to 21 metres, it needs to be refilled often and is best used near a pool or a barrel of water.

Allowing Songkran to take place this year is intended to help stimulate the economy which was battered over the past year due to the pandemic. Along with the prime minister, Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome also insisted that disease prevention measures must be strictly maintained, adding that social distancing and capacity limits are “chief” among the measures.

Popular spots for Songkran celebrations, like Bangkok’s Khao San Road, are given the “okay” to hold events, as long as they abide by the rules to prevent the spread of Covid-19. For Khao San Road, famous among foreign backpackers, the festival can give a boost to local businesses and vendors who have been struggling to earn an income due to the lack of tourists, according to president of the Khao San Business Association Sanga Ruangwattanakul.

“We know that it won’t help much as there are still no international tourists, but at least it is a good starting point to reignite business activities on Khao San Road… At the moment, we can only count on the support of local tourists to survive.”

He says 80% of the business activities on the street rely on foreign tourists. Many businesses that rely heavily on tourists, like massage shops and souvenir shops, there are “no customers at all.”

“For pubs and bars, there are just a few customers per night. Out of 500 entrepreneurs on the road, only 50 are still operating.”

Travel restrictions are likely to be eased in time for Songkran, Prayut says, adding that the government is still reviewing the rules for the holiday.

“The government is in the process of considering what can be allowed, whether to permit some activities or all of them. But if the virus spreads, the government might be blamed for it…So I call for your understanding. Easing restrictions is not an easy call to make since the government has to take responsibility for the whole country.”

Director of the Health Science Centre of Emerging Diseases at Chulalongkorn University, Thiravat Hemachudha, said he was concerned with the government’s plan to relax restrictions during the water festival. While the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration reported a decline in the number of daily coronavirus infections, he says the CCSA did not report on 100 infections at a plant in Samut Sakhon.

I've already decided that I will be a miserable git this year, and will not step outside the front gate during Songkran. Mrs BB will probably do her traditional thing, and invite the family around to pour water over her Buddha images. Maybe a BBQ in the evening. That will do for me.

If it wasn't for the iced water dickheads, I'd consider joining in, but they just ruin the day for me.

I think the wording goes something like, "Celebrations must comply with disease control measures." Are you not supposed to keep your mask dry, and if wet, change it? Do you want anonymous people putting their hands all over your face applying their good luck gunk? The ministers approving this need their heads examined.

A lot of dirty water is used at Songkran, if not infected with Covid, it always brings a lot of other infections.

Somebody must be really desperate to stimulate local tourism. However, I wonder if it will. Thais must already be holidayed out. Numbers are dropping with each 'stimulation' holiday. I don't think Songkran in Hua Hin will be the same. My idea of a decent Songkran is find a bar to defend, and repel all boarders with water cannons. With so many bars closed now, it just can't be the same. Songkran in Hua Hin has to change this year, and I can't see the changes attracting visitors. Maybe larger centres like Khao San Road will be a success, but Ghost Town Binthablock?

Songkran water splashing likely to be allowed

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... be-allowed

Water splashing will probably be allowed during the Songkran festival next month, Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome said on Tuesday.

It should get the green light because the daily number of new Covid-19 cases had dropped from three digits to only two digits, the minister said.

He also thought it possible people travelling around on trucks and splashing water on roads would be allowed.

"Celebration activities will be considered. For now, it is not prohibited," Mr Itthiphol said.

Officials were focusing more on ways to limit the number of participants in Songkran events.

"We are paying more attention to the number of people at event venues... We will find a balance between helping the economy and the prevention of new clusters (of Covid-19) which would spread the disease in communities," the culture minister said.

People would be advised to observe social distancing when giving traditional greetings to elderly people during the Thai New Year. Event organisers would also be asked to ensure social distancing. Chairs could be arranged for participants, Mr Itthiphol said.

Detailed measures for the Songkran festival would be presented to a sub-committee of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Thursday, he said.

The chairman of the CCSA sub-committee, Gen Nattaphol Nakpanich, said on Tuesday the Culture Ministry would work out how the Songkran festival should be organised.

The secretary-general of the National Security Council said the ministry was likely to propose suitable measures. The government, the public, businesses and event organisers were by now familiar with Covid-19 control measures, Gen Nattaphol said.

Songkran is from Apri 13-15 this year.

Stay tuned on this as may be significant changes about what's allowed and not allowed. Meetings all over the place this week.

This Friday seems to be the decision day. I wouldn't count on water throwing and the usual partying to be allowed.

There's been a significant spike in Covid cases in Bangkok and they're increasing by the day. This alone will probably make them cut back on what they previously said would be allowed this year.

No idea at the moment if there will be separate provincial decisions, or a nationwide restriction.

Water fights officially banned for Songkran

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... r-songkran

The Covid-19 task force on Friday banned street water fights during the Songkran festival for the second year running, on fears it could result in the spreading of Covid-19.

The Songkran festival holiday this year is from April 12-15 inclusive, preceded by a weekend.

Wild street battles with water guns and flinging water from pickup trucks were a normal part of what has been described as the world's biggest water fight, until the pandemic struck.

"Water splashing will not happen this Songkran. We must ask you to cooperate with us," Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said on Friday.

He said foam parties would also be banned. The tradition of pouring water over the hands of older people, religious activities and travel between provinces to visit relatives would be allowed.

Thailand has been relatively successful in controlling coronavirus infections, with a new wave of infections in the first two months of the year now levelling off, and recording 90 covid-related fatalities to date .

But strict border controls have decimated the tourism industry, with revenues dropping over 80% as visitor numbers plunged from 40 million visitors in 2019 to 6.7 million last year before the country closed its doors.

A global vaccine rollout has given hope that tourism can be revived and Dr Taweesilp gave more details on Friday on a plan to relax strict quarantine rules starting on April 1.

Mandatory quarantine would be cut from 14 to 10 days for most arrivals and halved for those who were vaccinated, he said.

To me, Songkran = water.

IMHO they've cancelled Songkran, but are saying please travel, stay in hotels and you can still get drunk. We need you to spend money.

It seems that entire purpose of Songkran has been lost, much like the purpose of Christmas. Or is that now called Xmas?

'Xmas' dates back to the 16th century and is nothing to do with today's 'woke'. 'X' comes from the first letter in greek (chi) and is the first letter of Christos.

Anyway

:offtopic:

I was surprised when they originally announced that Songkran was to go ahead. I think this u-turn was inevitable.

Operators banking on Songkran
Hotel and airline operators have high hopes the upcoming Songkran celebration will revive sluggish tourism sentiment as the second wave of the pandemic wanes.

Thirayuth Chirathivat, chief executive of Centara Hotels and Resorts, said forward booking for the Songkran week has been outstanding for the whole month, even though it pales in comparison to 2019 levels.

Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin and beach destinations such as Phuket already received more than 70% forward booking.

He said those hotels might be fully booked between April 11-14, despite the lack of a subsidy campaign from the government, which has yet to start the new phase.

Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, president of Bangkok Airways, said the extension of the Songkran holiday to six days will prompt local tourists to take more trips.

However, the load factor during Songkran is difficult to predict as the airline is now flying only 30% of domestic capacity based on passenger demand, which has yet to fully rebound from the last Covid wave in December, with demand resuming gradually.

That week will be a good time to avoid Hua Hin like the plague - pun intended.
