You'd better hope there are no Bolton fans on this forum - you've just committed the ultimate sin by asking the question in the Championship section. They are a well established Premiership side - a league above.
I know that, they are about half way down the table and indeed doing well. Whatever section, it's still a valid question from a non-Brit. If I've offended anyone, it was not my purpose. And you guys think we're too serious about the NFL... Pete
Pete,
Actually 'Wanderers' is a very common addition to a town or city name when it is a sports team in the UK, but notably football. The most common are 'United' or 'City', often used to distinguish between teams from the same city (e.g. the two Manchester teams). I haven't checked this, but I believe Wanderers comes from the very earliest days of football, and was used by teams that didn't originally have their own ground or even pitch, so would always be wandering around to play other teams at their place.
As far as the league tables go, they are often shown without the full names of the teams, and abbreviated to the place name, which gives the impression that all teams are just the place name. Examples in the Premier League are Tottenham (Hotspurs, and often just called 'Spurs'), Wigan and Charlton (Athletic), Manchester, West Ham, Sheffield and Newcastle (United), Manchester (City) and Blackburn (Rovers).

My goodness WL, I never saw this post way back in February, thanks. Pete
Three more games, and 3 weeks less holiday for your lads. Personally, I don't think your lads will cut it in the play offs, and it will only bring more heart ache to the fans, and Southampton Football Club will start the new season in the second division just that little bit less refreshed than the other teams.
Still, we all have to have our dreams.
Incidentally, where are the play off finals this year? Wembley or the Millennium?

I think your probably right, Saints have a habit of messing it up when it counts, earlier in the season had four pretty easy games in row - result 1 point out of 12. I think any of the four in the play offs could win it. I also think that’s been the overwhelming theme of the Championship this season, in that, any of the teams putting a good, disciplined game together were able to beat the opposition, whoever they were. All in all a very enjoyable and close season, top and bottom. So many teams evenly placed.
I think Sunderland really had a superb season. When, I wonder, was the last time that a team sitting at the bottom of the table, went on to win the league.
One thing I have noticed this year is that the style of play in the Championship is so different to that of the Premiership. So many teams go away from home and shut up shop. Waiting for the break to sneak the odd goal win. Derby have been really effective at it, so many 1-0 wins. Saints still try and play a premiership style and it doesn’t always work.
The final will be at Wembley, my heart says Saints will be there, but I think it will be a Derby(1) and West Brom(3) final.
I really hope Wolves make it, because my long departed Grandad was born there and was a big fan; they were once a massive club and it would be nice to see them be so again. Should be a cracking black country match between them and WBA!
Speaking of Leeds thier top management are furious over the mindless idiots who ran on to the pitch the other week. A spokesman said,' We hoped the team would have played better than that'. But then again in hindsight Dennis Wise did promise the supporters that by the end of this season they would no longer be playing in the championship... Which finally brings me round to the subject of the difference between the championship and a cordless drill being, neither has Leeds.. boom, boom... Nomad xxx

Well JD, I was right. However, it must have been one heck of a game, and would have been a tribute to the Championship this season. So many teams were the equal of each other, with the leading positions changing so many times. Even my team, if it wasn't for a 5 match losing run around the FA Cup Quarter Final could have been there in the top 6.
Its a shame really because brother lives in Southampton, and he was able to get tickets for my son to go to watch the top teams whenever they visited.
Still, they can have a well earned rest now, and get prepared for new battles next season.
