Record caseload continues

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -continues

The Covid-19 caseload nationwide continued to set a record for the second consecutive day on Thursday, with 1,543 cases — 1,540 local infections and three imported cases, raising the total to 37,453.

Dr Chawetsan Namwat, acting director for emergency health hazard and disease control at the Department of Disease Control, said on Thursday that the daily increment was four digits for the second consecutive day.

On Wednesday the government announced the daily increment at 1,335.

"The number of new cases is increasing. Most are family members and those in contact with previous cases linked to crowded places in many areas, including entertainment places, parties, seminars and students' camps," Dr Chawetsan said.

"To reduce risks, people should work from home after the Songkran festival."

Daily new cases were reported in 62 provinces. Of them, 1,161 were confirmed at hospitals and 379 detected in communities.

"At-risk people are in the working age group and the spread of the disease is fast," he said.

Bangkok logged 409 new cases including 175 linked to entertainment places, parties, concerts and restaurants.

Chiang Mai had 278 new cases, Chon Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan 98 cases each and Samut Prakan 24 new cases.

The three imported cases were quarantined arrivals from India, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Since April 1, Covid-19 cases have been reported in 75 provinces while the two southern provinces of Ranong and Satun were free of infection. The number of provinces with Covid-19 cases was higher than that in the previous wave, Dr Chawetsan said.

Of the 37,453 total cases, 28,383 (75.8%) recovered, including 61 discharged over the past 24 hours. A total of 8,973 patients remain in hospitals, including 11 dependent on ventilators. The death toll remained unchanged at 97.

Global Covid-19 cases soared by 803,194 in 24 hours to 138.83 million. The worldwide death toll was up by 13,513 to 2.98 million.

The United States had the most cases at 32.15 million, up 78,439, and the most deaths at 578,092, up 915.

Brazil had the second most deaths at 362,180, up 3,462 which was the world's highest toll increment, and the third most cases at 13.68 million, up 75,998.

India had the second most cases with 14.07 million, up 199,569, and 173,152 deaths, up 1,037.

Interesting numbers, with so many local infections it's almost like someone has been 'priming' the country so they can open up the borders again, and they would be right to say that hardly any of the infections are coming in through the airport as it's on the loose already.

....."Infected patients can get more advice on self-isolation at the Medical Department Hotline 1668, the National Institute of Emergency Medicine 1669 or the NHSO 1330 hotline, 24 hours a day."......

Is that just sloppy journalism, or a hint of things to come concerning self home isolation if testing positive?

Bangkok officials issue advice for Covid contacts required to self-isolate

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/bang ... lf-isolate

The governor of Bangkok says anyone who has had contact with a Covid-19 patient must self-isolate for 10 days, the incubation period for the virus. Nation Thailand reports that Governor Aswin Kwanmuang has issued advice for those self-isolating, saying they must adhere to the following 4 steps.

1. Sleep in a separate room to other residents
2. Do not eat with other people living in the house
3. Separate trash, as garbage used by a potentially infected person can be a source of transmission
4. Use a separate bathroom where possible. If not possible, the potentially infected person should be last to use the bathroom, washing sinks and the toilet seat after each use

The governor says people who live alone in a house or condo can use a food delivery service, but must wear a mask while in the presence of food delivery workers, as well as washing their hands regularly. Condominium residents must advise the building manager that they are self-isolating and avoid using common areas such as elevators.

Masks should be worn at all times indoors and all residents should observe social distancing while in common areas. Building managers are responsible for instructing residents to observe disease prevention measures and should also undertake regular disinfection of common areas and manage potentially infectious waste appropriately.

Nation Thailand lists the following numbers for those who need further medical advice.

Covid-19 situation at the Bangkok Health Office Hotline (02) 203 2393 or (02) 203 2396 or (02) 203 2883 and (02) 245 4964 (24 Hours)

BKK COVID-19 website hotline (02) 203 2393 and (02) 203 2396 (service hours 8am-10pm)

People with Covid-19 symptoms should contact the Erawan Centre, Bangkok 1646. People at risk of exposure to infectious cases can call the Emergency Operation Centre at 097 046 7549 and the Department of Disease Control at 1422.

Infected patients can get more advice on self-isolation at the Medical Department Hotline 1668, the National Institute of Emergency Medicine 1669 or the NHSO 1330 hotline, 24 hours a day.

Anutin and his ilk of ignorant/arrogant politicians constantly point fingers at 'dirty farangs' but this time the problem has been closer to home ...

Blame the rot in Thai high society for the third wave of the pandemic
Over the course of the past few weeks, many Thais have been outraged at the conduct of the current government and its ministers.

Many have blamed the third wave of the pandemic on some ministers who disregarded health and safety protocols to enjoy the pleasures of high-end exclusive entertainment venues. Even more egregious was the fact that some ministers and aides refused to divulge their entire timeline and putting more people at risk.

Others still are pointing fingers at the government for its terrible vaccination program which has bet heavily on the local production of a single vaccine by an inexperienced company. To make matters worse, the government has also dragged its feet in allowing private hospitals to acquire their own vaccines.

All of these are legitimate complaints.

It seems that for this government of monopolies and privileges, good conduct is what is expected of the greater public and not themselves. Rather than set an example to the entire country, the MPs and ministers that sit in parliament would rather represent our worst qualities than our best.

But I would argue that the blame should not rest solely with the current government, as distasteful as I find them. Rather it is the entire upper-echelon of Thai society that must shoulder the blame as well.

The privileged class, the affluent, the well-heeled, rather than being society’s best and brightest, they are our worst and by some distance. It seems, in Thailand, that the spirit of high society is morally bankrupt and terminally ill.

https://www.thaienquirer.com/26422/opin ... -pandemic/

Had a chat with a group of Thais I know last night about this, they're all in agreement but essentially won't do anything about it as they believe the system/society here cannot be changed.

Covid UPDATE: 1,582 new infections announced, more restrictions on the way

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/covi ... on-the-way (Charts at link)

Today the CCSA announced 1,582 new Covid infections across Thailand in the past 24 hours. The small increase on yesterdays total will provide the CCSA with the information they need for this afternoon’s scheduled meeting, chaired by the Thai PM. It is expected that they will announce new restrictions but are unlikely to go for total lockdowns of provinces or ‘at risk’ districts. The Thaiger will bring this information to you ASAP after it is announced.

Here is the list of the current 18 red zone provinces which could have their restrictions raised at this afternoon’s meeting of the CCSA. Read more at: https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/new- ... sa-meeting

Since April 1 there has been a steady growth of new infections, described as the third wave in Thai media – much higher than the number of daily infections in the first and second waves.

During Songkran the case numbers have been…

April 13 – 965

April 14 – 1,335

April 15 – 1,543

April 16 – 1,582

67 people are currently reported to be in a “serious condition” relating to their Covid status.

Thailand’s trajectory of daily new cases greatly exceeds the last surge that featured clusters around Samut Sakhon’s coastal fish markets and Rayong gambling dens which started on December 20 last year.

Third wave not expected to subside until June
Internal discussions within the government and the public health ministry suggest that the current wave of the pandemic will not be brought under control until June, sources told Thai Enquirer on Friday.

Thailand has seen the number of new cases per day continue to climb with the country reporting over 1,000 cases per day for several days.

Field hospitals are being built throughout the country to house patients with at least 8 provinces now classified as a red zone by the government.

The government will meet on Friday to discuss imposing a partial or total lockdown of the country to combat the latest wave of the coronavirus pandemic which began in entertainment venues in the capital.

“Even if the country were brought into a lockdown immediately, the Songkran travels have likely made the situation much worse,” said a source in the health ministry who requested anonymity.

“Internal discussions say that in a best case scenario, we will have the situation under control by late May to early June,” the source told Thai Enquirer by phone.

So far, inter-province travel is still allowed and many people have begun to return to the capital following the Thai New Year period.

However, experts have said that the uncontrolled nature of the pandemic coupled with the travel during Songkran means that more provinces than ever before have been exposed to the disease.

“If the country doesn’t lockdown, the doctors are predicting a worst case scenario of several thousand new cases a day and we’re going not going to see the end of the pandemic until the vaccines play a significant role,” the source said.

“Imagine France, the US, the UK, that’s our future if we don’t start fighting this thing now and people start taking responsibility.”

Guess what is coming ... lockdown, curfew, alcohol ban ...

At least it's a smaller increase. I'm sure the next few days will show which way we're heading.

+370 - +207 - + 39.

Yes, it took about 5 days for the Maya bomb to slowly explode. People will still be travelling until Monday, so if nothing substantial has happened by the following Monday, hopefully we'll have seen the worst of it.
