Re: British Food

I saw a FB ad for Nany’s Café advertising some good deals on cheese. I dropped in there today to purchase said cheese, and as I was paying, I saw a hot case next to the register that was full of sausage rolls. Never tried them, but have wanted to. I got the last Cumberland sausage roll in the case and I ate it right there. It was very interesting. The sausage had a very mild taste, very similar to the breakfast sausage we have in America. The pastry around it was fluffy and flaky, similar to a turnover. I thought that there was probably too much pastry, and I pulled off most of it after the first two bites. I enjoyed my first sausage roll, but decided it would be much better with a sauce; maybe a mustard-mayo combo, or sriracha. I also picked up some pies and a pasty to take home, as I haven’t tried those yet neither.

There has been a British outcry on social media after a US chain claimed to have invented a new summer snack that looks suspiciously like a sausage roll.

Supermarket Trader Joe's has called it the "Puff Dog".

Los Angeles-based lifestyle website Hello Giggles said it was "genius".

However, the UK's The Mirror newspaper was less impressed. "Sausage roll given ridiculous new name," read its headline on Saturday.

It is typically sausage meat wrapped in puff pastry, although the Puff Dog has opted to use beef.
Comments:
Umm. That's a sausage roll that we've had in England for a hundred years!

Next up: 'America invents the Scotch Egg!'

'Pigs in Blankets' in the US are sausages wrapped in hard pastry. Of course in the UK they are sausages wrapped in bacon.

Maybe we should expand this thread to 'American (British) food vs British British food'. A bit like 'American English' and 'British English'!

The sausage roll I had today was nothing I had ever seen in the US before. And I can’t stand Trader Joe’s, and it doesn’t surprise me that they would try to say they invented something that’s already been around forever. Yeah, we have bagel dogs and the good ol’ American corn dog, but no sausages nor dogs wrapped in puff pastry.

Jack, if you enjoyed that sausage roll, have you tried the Ham & Bacon sausage rolls? Much larger, and the sausage is so much nicer (my personal opinion, of course).

I plan on trying them all! I’m a fan. But I’ve only had the one from today so far. What is the usual condiment to go with these things? Or does it vary depending on filling?

You would normally eat a sausage roll just as it is, best eaten while still warm (but not too hot) from the oven.

I guess being a typical American, my instinct is to want to dunk it in ranch dressing or something. I like it just how it is though. In retrospect, I think any sauce would have overpowered the very subtle taste of the Cumberland sausage, so it was good that I didn’t try mustard or anything else.

Oh absolutely DB.....

So, is there a Thai version with sausage meat spiced with lemongrass?

As an aside, is "La Baguette" still open (travelling out of HH towards Cha Am on the right)? Did great pies and pastries....

I pass that way quite regularly and although I can’t be 100% certain, believe it’s still open - if not call into my place and I’ll knock a batch up for you

All 3 Baguettes are open. The one near the palace, one just before Makro and one just before Cha Am.

The ones I have seen and eaten are unsurprisingly just a bog standard Thai sausage wrapped in pastry. TOPS fresh bakery section make a decent one (in Bkk).

I’m sure I could figure this out, but have never cooked one of these before. Anyone here perfected a time and temp for these bad boys?
