Re: The Rugby Thread
Question: I understand the purpose of kicking the ball away when you're deep in your own territory but why would you do it when you are deep in the opponents territory with the possibility of scoring?
I enjoy watching the game but the rules seem esoteric and many. I can't figure out what constitutes and offside.

Normally, you wouldn't.handdrummer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 3:32 am Question: I understand the purpose of kicking the ball away when you're deep in your own territory but why would you do it when you are deep in the opponents territory with the possibility of scoring?
Very basically, you need to be behind the person who kicks the ball before you can chase it. If you're not, you must stand still until he passes you and puts you onside.I can't figure out what constitutes an offside.
It's not that simple, but that'll do for starters. It's really all about being behind the ball-player.

July Internationals yes, I wasn't going to start a pool for that one - it's all about the Lions. That said, I'll likely join a pool!!PeteC wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 3:26 am Pharvey, Selgwent has already started a pool for the July Internationals.
Join Not Lions, my July Internationals league on @Superbru! You can find my pool here:

Re: The Rugby Thread
Along with what DM is saying, normally you wouldn't, however a "Box Kick" from the attacking Scrum-Half, or an "Up-an-under" or "Garryowen" as it was in the day - it's a bit of a gamble, but hoped your team would regain possession. You certainly wouldn't (or shouldn't) kick possession away if you had a chance of scoring.handdrummer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 3:32 am Question: I understand the purpose of kicking the ball away when you're deep in your own territory but why would you do it when you are deep in the opponents territory with the possibility of scoring?
OFFSIDE!! Oh Good God, don't go there..... far, far too many rules - which are all too often not refereed correctly!!

What is the overlap with these events Pharvey, and the impact it may have on Sale?

^ Further above, Sale final fixture appears to be June 12 against Exeter. I guess any conflict with Sale players going to the Lions matches would be in any playoff situation, but I can find no schedule for any playoffs.

Agreed, the ref was not up to the job. Not enough authority shown, and he didn't look or sound fit enough to me. He waited far too long before giving a yellow card in the closing minutes - and the prop business at the end was farcical!pharvey wrote: ↑Sat Jun 05, 2021 11:13 pmLeicester vs Bristol was full on today - some poor refereeing, some "very" clinical play from both teams both on and off the pitch.... I thought the punch up was going to be between the coaching teams before the final whistle, not between players (and subs) after it!!
Lam: "The prop can't come on, he's injured"
Ref: "But the card says it was a tactical substitution"
"He's injured"
"Are you sure?"
"He's injured"
"Then you lose 2 men instead of one"
"He's fine, it was a tactical substitution"
Lam shouldn't have been allowed to get away with that, and I hope he's disciplined. Way out of order.
I was disappointed with the 'punch up' at the end. I was expecting to see an old-fashioned free for all, but it was just something and nothing - mostly nothing.
I was exhausted by the final whistle!

Re: The Rugby Thread
As you say Pete it's all dependent on the Play-off's and Premiership Final - the Semi's are due to be played over the weekend of the 18th and 19th of June, with the final scheduled for 26th of June. Premiership clubs have no obligation to release players whether or not the clubs are involved in the Semi-Finals or Final. They have however made an agreement to release players to the British Lions for their warm-up game against Japan on 26th of June, however there would obviously be squad sessions prior to this - probable 2 weeks earlier.
Whether or not there has been a similar agreement for the Premiership's South African contingent is another matter.
The first match of the B&I Lions tour is against the Emirates Lions on July 3rd, but obviously the squad will be "in camp" sometime before that......

Re: The Rugby Thread
DM &Pharvey, thank you. It's a bit clearer now.
I only have access to French rugby and not speaking French it's hard to always figure out what's going on.
I tried looking up Rugby rules on google and it's like reading a foreign language.
I understand the English penchant for tradition but surely some rules could be simplified if not removed altogether.

Re: The Rugby Thread
The refereeing has once again been far from consistent this season. One of my pet hates is the feeding of the scrum - Christ, the ball was going to the Second Row's feet at times!dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 3:01 pm Agreed, the ref was not up to the job. As you say, the "substitution saga" was utterly ludicrous - I wouldn't be surprised if Leicester do make a formal complaint, but would anything really come of it?
I was exhausted by the final whistle!

For excitement, certainly one of the best this season....

Funnily enough, I was more concerned about Sam Simmonds...
