Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
Very good article (quite long) in.BK post about why testing has gone down so much from 70l.a month ago to 40k now.
Part of it below.
"Are there solutions to save the bankrupted healthcare system (and government)? Instead of finding money to pay for necessary expenses, the government opts to cut expenses. This is my intuition from what has been happening. First, they "cut" the number of Covid cases by performing PCR testing as little as possible. Hospitals will not admit cases without PCR testing as non-PCR tested case would not be eligible for NHSO reimbursement.
A clever strategy is to let people do self-testing and give them cheap medical care kits. The drawback is that when patients need to go to hospital, their conditions would be too severe.
Second, they reduce treatment time from 14 days to 7-10 days aiming to push patients out of expensive hospital care. Third, they delay payments to medical staff and suppliers. The results? Lesser quality care for patients, and what else but more deaths."

Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
14,653 cases and 262 deaths.
It doesn't look like they're managing to hide deaths as they are in infections!
They currently brag that the fatality rate is below 1%. I wonder if they realise that by under-reporting cases while the deaths are high will ultimately increase the fatality rate. For example, taking today's deaths as a percentage of today's cases reported gives a fatality rate of 1.8%. If reporting continues in this vein, then the overall fatality rate is set to increase albeit on paper!

Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
As I mentioned over on the another thread, this is an absolutely standard phenomenon in epidemics, and has been known about since the 1800's. Infection figures that rise steeply tend to fall equally steeply on the other side. It's referred to as a "bell curve" for reasons that are self-evident.
Here's an illustration of what this would typically look like, taken from a CDC website page, catchily entitled, "Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice, Third Edition, An Introduction to Applied Epidemiology and Biostatistics."

Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
On that basis in the coming weeks we should see an equally steep drop in fatalities.
Cases are rising quite steeply in the UK but deaths are way down!
The worldometer graphs for Thailand show cases coming down but not deaths!!
We'll see.

Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
I've always assumed that the reduction of people on ventilators is not a 'positive' and probably caused by deaths.
Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
I'm not sure there is any way of knowing, depends if you are a glass half empty/full type. I would like to think more recoveries than deaths or even 50/50.

Re: Coronavirus (Covid-19) News
Well, the bell curve applies primarily to cases but as we've seen in the UK recently, not necessarily deaths, or at least not when the majority of the population has been vaccinated.
Deaths always lag behind cases because people mostly die (if they're going to) somewhere around a week or two after being diagnosed. So yes, deaths should start to fall in a couple of weeks if cases continue to fall.
