Re: Documentaries
Two 9/11 documentaries on BBC iplayer that look like good viewing. Just sticking the first one on now
Surviving 9/11 available now.
“Surviving 9/11″ takes the form of two intertwining narratives: the two-hour period when terrorists hijacked four planes and crashed three of them into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, and the story of the 20 years since. Blending testimony from American and British interviewees and personal and public archives, the story of the day unfolds almost in real time.
9/11: Inside the President's War Room On at 20:30 UK time tonight. Available on iplayer from then.
9/11 from the President's perspective, with exclusive access to information from the one's that had to take decisions during the World Trade Center's attack.

Re: Documentaries
Thanks for that, Pietro.
She's foul-mouthed and mad as a hatter but a hugely entertaining and extremely knowledgeable person with a very warm heart. I was lucky enough to meet her about 30 years ago when she owned a typically eccentric house on the clifftops near Dover - it was a converted lookout post or gun emplacement or something...

The list of films and TV programmes she’s appeared in is very long and very wide-ranging - no doubt a reflection of her talents!!

Jealous beyond belief, I would love to have met her. I have been lucky enough to meet Brian Blessed who to me has the same sense of humour (not allowed these days)!!dtaai-maai wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 2:02 am I was lucky enough to meet her about 30 years ago when she owned a typically eccentric house on the clifftops near Dover - it was a converted lookout post or gun emplacement or something...
Mr Blessed by the way wouldn't know me from Adam - just dropping a name!

Re: Documentaries
Just watched a documentary about the prison riot at Attica in 1971.
Pretty usual stuff up until the authorities stormed the prison, words fail me to describe the brutality of the law enforcement personnel. Please don't judge me unless you have watched it fully.

The Rescue
Put simply, the best thing I've watched for quite some time. Hard not to shed a tear when the boys get out of the cave. Incredible.

Re: Documentaries
A good documentary with several things I wasn't aware of. It pointed out quite strongly the inaptitude of the Thai authorities and their armed forces in such a situation. They actually impeded the rescue more than once.
One comment "I've seen chaos in my time but nothing like the chaos I saw when I arrived at the site!"
The Thais have generally claimed credit for the rescue but the fact is that left to them there'd be no survivors.

Re: Documentaries
I haven't watched the movie yet, but have looked at the credits. Are we sure there isn't an anti-Thai spin on what is being portrayed?
Hideous, I know, that a news report might be manipulated these days in such a way that it becomes a farce, but just look at everything else that's going on. Be sure, if made by the Thais, a completely different story would probably be told.

Re: Documentaries
The Thai version claims all the credit for the Thai authorities. No mention of outside help.
Here's an example which we know not to be true:
I very much doubt that this documentary is welcomed by the authorities here.

Re: Documentaries
I didn't recognise any anti-thai sentiment in the documentary.

Re: Documentaries
You sure you watched it?
Even my wife who is Thai said how stupid the Thai leaders were. They refused permission for the rescue to proceed not once but twice. The Americans stepped in to talk to the Thai governor to plead with them to allow the rescue attempt to go ahead when there was only on option left.
After giving permission, they then said that if any boy dies during the rescue attempt then charges would be laid and they'd be sucked into the judicial system. Bearing in mind that if they'd not eventually been given permission, none of the boys would have survived.
There were many instances.

Re: Documentaries
Mistakes were made but I wouldn't call the documentary 'anti-Thai' for pointing out some of them. The Brits didn't cover themselves in glory to begin with, either.
As shown in the documentary, if it was up to the British divers first instincts, then the boys would have been left to die. They tried to book flights out as they thought it to be an impossible, pointless exercise.
Fortunately, the divers attempts to get flights out the country were stopped and they were convinced to give it another go. Probably convinced by the Thai people.
But, ultimately, the British divers involved wanted to throw in the towel and give up on the boys. They tried to leave.
They very much redeemed themselves, mind. Very very much.
Edit: and the documentary also shows the hundreds of Thai heroes involved, too. An incredible effort.
