Thailand to try alternative COVID-19 vaccination method to stretch supplies
BANGKOK (Reuters) - Doctors in Thailand have been given the go-ahead to start giving COVID-19 booster shots under the skin, rather than injecting them into muscles, officials said on Monday, in an effort to strengthen immunity and stretch vaccine supplies.
Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the method, which doctors began exploring https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-paci ... 2021-08-19 last month, could be used at the discretion of medical professionals, providing it was supported by evidence.
Chalermpong Sukonthaphon, director of the Vachira Hospital in Phuket, said his hospital had been given the green light to use the technique from Friday, as trials had showed it triggered a similar immune response to the regular method.
"One vaccine dose can be used for five intradermal injections," Chalermpong told Reuters.
Phuket's population was among the first to be inoculated in Thailand, as a pre-requisite for the island to reopen to vaccinated foreign tourists in July.
Starting in April https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heal ... SKBN2BS02F they received two doses of the vaccine of Sinovac, for which booster shots of other vaccines have been issued in several countries after concerns about its resistance to the Delta COVID-19 variant.
Thailand has turned to unconventional approaches due to problems in supplies, despite manufacturing the AstraZeneca vaccine locally.
So far, only 21% of the estimated 72 million people living in the country have been fully vaccinated.
Authorities have also decided to administer separate shots of Sinovac's vaccine followed by that of AstraZeneca, a technique yet to be adopted elsewhere.
Thailand has reported more than 1.4 million infections and 15,000 deaths, the majority since April this year.

^^ A whole month of research. Must have been really thorough, well documented and perhaps even peer reviewed by one or two of anutin's close mates.

Re: Vaccines - Covid 19
I noticed that many Thais have a side effect from the vaccines but Farang rarely do. Is there a reason? Is the potency of the vaccination reduced to better suit a Thai rather than a European for example?

Both of my daughters had Pfizer and had reactions. The 36 yr. old was in bed for a day with headaches and abdominal pains, the 25 yr. old had a headache and her period was late.malcolminthemiddle wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:51 am I noticed that many Thais have a side effect from the vaccines but Farang rarely do. Thailand's Vaccine Tracker (Sept. 21, 2021)
.
About 24.02% of the population is fully vaccinated. 29,501,110 (+300,033) people have received the first dose, while 15,899,158 (+511,087) have been fully inoculated.
.
At this rate, Thailand needs to administer 498,828 doses per day within 101 days to reach the herd immunity target by the year's end.

Strange because the majority of Thai and Farangs I have spoken too had a reaction after the second AZ jab. It was usually within 12 hours of the jab and most were better after another12 hoursmalcolminthemiddle wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:51 am I noticed that many Thais have a side effect from the vaccines but Farang rarely do. Are the people with reactions across all age groups? Or trending towards younger or older?PET wrote:Strange because the majority of Thai and Farangs I have spoken too had a reaction after the second AZ jab. I'm located in western Canada and have had two Pfizer shots, for the two days after each shot felt rotten as many of my friends here have, be it AZ, Moderna or Pfizer. I truly believe it has nothing to do with being asian, black or white

In my family universe I found the opposite to be the case. I had a reaction for 3 days after the first shot but none of the Thais did!!malcolminthemiddle wrote: ↑Wed Sep 22, 2021 11:51 am I noticed that many Thais have a side effect from the vaccines but Farang rarely do. This was all over Thai TV yesterday, but these jabs are going ahead anyway.
https://www.thaienquirer.com/32993/stop ... roup-says/Stop giving Sinopharm to under-18s, doctors’ group says
A doctors’ group urged agencies to hold off from giving the Sinopharm vaccine against Covid-19 to children, as it has not yet gained emergency approval for people under 18 from the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Opposition MPs also voiced concern.
“Children are not lab rats,” the Health Personnel Association (ภาคีบุคลากรสาธารณสุข) wrote on its Facebook page Monday, saying it “objects to the research that looks to provide Sinopharm to children.” The statement recommended Pfizer instead for children.
The Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) this week started to give Sinopharm shots to 2,000 students age 10-17 as part of their latest trial with a target of 108,000 students. The trial was approved by its research ethics committee.
But the FDA last week rejected the latest request for the approval to give the inactivated vaccine to children as young as three.
The Health Personnel Association questioned the criteria by the CRA’s research ethics committee to approve its latest Sinopharm trial, saying the decision was made on a pre-trial of just 720 samples.
“Is this an attempt to clear out the leftover [Sinopharm] stock to provide the space for Moderna vaccines that just have been ordered?” they wrote.
The Health Personnel Association said Pfizer has already announced on Monday that its vaccine works on children age 5 to 11 years old and the safety profile was similar to of the older age group of 16 to 25.
Tassanee Buranupakorn, an MP for the Pheu Thai Party in Chiang Mai, said she is concerned that Sinopharm vaccines are being given to children age 10 to 17 in a large trial even though the Thai FDA has yet to approve it.
Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, a party-list MP for the Move Forward Party, said parents who are giving their consent to allow their children to be vaccinated with the Sinopharm vaccine must understand that the sole entity responsible for any adverse effects is the CRA, and that the academy’s campaign “VACC 2 School” is a trial.

https://www.thaienquirer.com/33017/sino ... cial-says/Sinovac has one big advantage over other vaccines, official says
“Sinovac had one major advantage over the other vaccines, it was available in large quantities,” said the official on condition of anonymity.
“You have to remember that other vaccines like Pfizer and Moderna were backlogged for months, our AstraZeneca plants were not yet operational, so Sinovac was literally the only option we had to get in vaccines and fast.”
The official said that while the efficacy of the vaccine may be lower, it still prevented severe illnesses and deaths in the majority of cases – even with the Delta mutation.
They fail to mention that the reason for Sinovac being their only choice is down to the gross mismanagement by themselves!

Thailand in a nutshell ...
The US wants to send us 1 million Pfizer doses but can’t because Thai government hasn’t done paperwork
The Thai government has yet to sign off on the necessary documentation to receive Pfizer donations from the United States, a meeting between a Thai politician and a US senator has revealed.
United States Senator Tammy Duckworth in a meeting with Sudarat Keyuraphan, leader of the Thai Sang Thai Party, said that the United States is ready to send another one million donated Pfizer doses to Thailand but the Thai government have yet to reply with required documentation which is causing delay,
“[We have] a million doses that are waiting to go but Thailand has not finished the paperwork,” Duckworth said.
“I told the ambassador a month ago that it needs to be completed and they said they are going to go work on it…and in my position, it is very hard for me to go to the President and the national security agency and asked for more vaccines for Thailand when there is a million waiting that can’t be sent.”
