App electronic driving license

Post by Robinhood »

Has anyone downloaded and started using the DLT app for an electronic Thai driving license? If so, could you briefly describe the process?

Thanks HHinner. I heard about the app on Surf FM this week, who's tech correspondent was talking as if it was something new! Maybe they play a few repeats! Thanks anyway, I'll give it a try.

It is quite new. "So long since..." is middle of last year - long enough that I'd forgotten the procedure.

I've installed the app. The lack of English was a bit tricky, and so you have to guess a little. Once done though, it works great, and gives you ID on your phone without having to carry your license or passport. I recommend it!

I'm very wary of Thai apps/software, they don't have a great reputation where privacy and security are concerned, and large-scale data breaches are a very common occurrence here.

I'll stick with the physical license (which the cops cannot take off you now anyway).

:agree: My licence lives inside my wallet. There is much less chance of me forgetting my wallet than my phone. Usually, I'd take both phone and wallet with me anyway. I listened to Jonathan Fairfield on the radio, and he said even with the electronic licence, you needed the physical licence anyway, so to me, it's little more than a gimmick - just another chance to prove they can use QR Codes. More tail wagging the dog - wow, we've got a QR Code, how can we use it and show the world we are clever?

If Jonathan Fairfield said that, I believe he is mistaken (but I could be wrong). The ability to use the app has been in force since 20/9/2562 (2019).

Anyway, as Buksida pointed out, the police are no longer allowed to take the physical licence hostage, so a good reason to use the app is no longer applicable. So, whatever's easier in the circumstances.

The app would be handy when reporting a lost or stolen licence. But so would a photo of the licence.
