Thailands First Nuclear Power Plant

Post by PeteC »

This was in the news last week and forgot to post it. It appears to be a definite "go" for up and running by 2015. They are presently looking for 500-1000 acres along the coast. Places being investigated were not published.

We're full over here in the East unless you go between Chantaburi and Trat, or closer to Bangkok in the swamp land of Samut Prakan. That leaves the southern peninsula and your salt flats south of Bangkok.

I'll start a poll on this and we'll see what they publish in upcoming months. I'm sure the environmental people will stay on this like a hot potato and let the world know before EGAT does when they decide on a location. Pete :(

PS: I may have a bad year above. I recall the article saying "5 years for planning and 6 years for construction...." which would make it 2018?

I picked the Southern Peninsula as the salt flats and Samut Prakan are too close to Bangkok in case of a melt down, and east of Rayong is too close to Cambodia in case relations turn unfriendly in coming years. Pete

What exactly do you mean by the Southern peninsula, Pete? Which provinces? If the troubled ones, I don't think building a nuclear power station there would be in anyone's best interests. If you mean elsewhere, then I think I concur with your reasoning.

No, not that far south. Along the sparsely populated gulf coast south of HH and north of Surathani. Pete

Jah Man Pete

I had eer about dhis news too. do you know with which country they wanna Co operate on this Project.
I think This Prokect will be placed in the Salt plains around BKK as every New Mega Project has been in recent History. Aehh de sparsely Populated area South of Hua Hin and North of Surathani would be best as dhis Plant will defnatly be a NIMBY (Not in my back yard) object

I really hope dem EGAT Brothers choose de location wisely!

Was thinking the same, Terry, if it's sited down south.
Mind you, the environmental lobby down in Bang Saphang is pretty strong and vocal. I remember all the fuss last year (think it was) when there was talk of opening up a second steel works there. They were going to destroy important wetlands and marshes. Must admit, I havn't heard any more about that for some time.

I reckon it'll go on the eastern seaboard as most of Thailand's heavy industry is already located there so a little more environmental destruction wont have that much of an impact!

I don't know BK. Chonburi to Rayong has no space left on the coast, it's all hotels, resorts and housing. Mataphut industrial park is on the coast near Rayong but no where near 500-1000 acres available with coastal frontage for coolng/discharge water.

Next we reach Bhan Phae which is the major commercial fishing port over here now so they won't touch that.

After that there is Khlang a bit inland from the coast but this could be a coastal location for them.

Then Chantaburi which is plagued with bad floods each year from the mountains there. Too risky to build near there.

Then there is the area between Chantaburi and where Koh Chang is located off the coast. A possibility but not near Koh Chang as that is the new 'Thailand exclusive resort island...'

You are then a few kilos more in Trat and the Cambodian border and too close to the border for anything.

So, I only see the above possible two locations. Pete

PS: Plus the very important consideration that I don't want it over here....LOL. :P

I'll be old enough for Mr. Burns if it's on schedule (which it won't be). I'll be 68 in 2018. Probably complete in 2023 when I'm 73 and then I'll surely enjoy glowing in the dark from time to time if it's built over here. Maybe it will keep old winkie pointing in the right direction as well? :D Pete

No nuclearplants to Thailand! Solar energy more. And put those filters in coalplants.
