American Fried Rice / Khao Pat American

Post by Hahuahin »

Allow me to ask the food specialist's in Hua Hin where I can get the best possible American Fried Rice with ham, Fried chicken, hot dogs etc.,
I know its not to healthy and far from a gourmet dish but I love it now and then and so far no good luck when ordering takeaway. Any info welcome. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_fried_rice

I know I’m not answering your question but any fried rice in Thailand is always a disappointment for me.
Here, they use steamed rice that is recently cooked and maybe still warm, so when served the rice grains are soft and kind of stick together. They usually make it worse by adding tomatoes, this adds more wet and softness to the dish.

This is a contrast to say Indonesian or Malay fried rice (made from last night’s cold leftover steamed rice?). Here the fried rice is much drier, the rice grains still have their solid texture and it doesn’t immediately collapse into a ball of mush inside your mouth.

I'm not sure whether American Fried Rice corresponds with the former or the latter?

^ Yes, for years I struggled to cook fried rice and then I discovered by accident that if you put left over steamed rice in the fridge for a day or two in a container that isn't completely airtight, it fries very easily and doesn't stick together.

I don’t know how they make it, but the stir fried rice at the Nawang Steak restaurant is the best I’ve had locally. Located on the main Phetkasem road just over halfway between HH and Cha Am.

 I prefer soft rice compared to some places where its served quit hard/dry which make me think about uncooked :| But thats me.

Yes I remember reading long ago that what's more important than how you reheat rice is that you cool it quickly after the first cooking. Mine goes in the bottom of the fridge even while still a bit warm(not the salad compartment which is less cold even if it's at the bottom, apparently).

No answers yet for Hahuahin? Personally I have no idea, I guess most of us don't!

Where can you get even half-decent American Fried Rice? I'll try anything once (almost).

Its actually a couple of places I have ordered the dish, but they come with wrong taste on rice, no ham, no chicken so they clearly don't have it on their menu and serve it daily. Next time I shall simply go to the food court in Lotus (cash restaurant) where they do some omelet`s with side orders when waiting and ask if they can try to make a dish for me.

I'm familiar with that, but it's just that the couple of times I've been there to order, I feel the ooze of unfriendliness and a no existent service from the staff so I back off :(

Downstairs in Market Village they do a pretty good fried rice at the cash restaurant just at the front of the food court. Maybe they could adjust to what you want.

This one use cold leftover rice and the dish as I remember it should be. Add a tablespon with cashews on the side and it is complete. https://hot-thai-kitchen.com/american-f ... o-tutorial
