Thai Football 2023/24

Post by Big Boy »

Lets get this thread off on a very sour note. This could mark the beginning of the end for many Thai football teams.

Poor response for Thai league broadcasting rights deal

The Thai league broadcast rights has attracted bids of just about 50 million baht, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) said on Tuesday.

Thai League Co acting chairman Korrawee Pritsananantakul told Thai League 1 bosses during a meeting that a bid of 50 million baht was well below the FAT's target.

With one, maybe two Thai Football who are self-sufficient (turnstile/memorabilia sales), the rest are totally reliant upon sponsorship and TV rights money. Every season we read stories players not getting paid. The league is about to lose yet another team already because Thai football is unsustainable.

Loss of TV money will be a killer for so many clubs. Worrying times.

On a brighter note, some of you may have seen Nonthaburi Utd buses running around town - I actually had one follow me up Soi 94 yesterday. Somebody in Hua Hin has purchased Nonthaburi Utd, and has relocated the club to Hua Hin. I think the new team will be called Hua Hin Giants. They will also play in T3(West) and share the stadium with Hua Hin City. So our city now has 2 League Football Clubs.

From what I've heard, the new team will be an outlet for the Maraleina Sports Academy on Koh Samui.

It now looks as though there'll now be 2 clubs fighting for the city's regular 150 supporters.

I've been looking into the above post further, and things still aren't 100% clear. Maybe Hua Hin Maraleina, maybe only Nonthaburi Utd u.16s. I'm sure we'll find out more as the season draws closer.

There, that's easy isn't it? Only in Thailand. Instead of the above rubbish, why didn't they simply add 30฿ to admission prices?

What a mess!!!

Before the above TV packages were formalised, the clubs started collecting fan's subscriptions stating they would be good for AIS, 3BB and True. One club (sponsored by True) even started selling the package with a 20% discount.

When I read the above packages, I thought this is going to be hard to tie up what the clubs are doing. I was right.

The situation as it stands is only True will cooperate with the clubs, leaving thousands of supporters who get their TV through AIS or 3BB having to pay a further 500฿ if they want to watch Thai football this weekend.

Personalty, I'm not too bothered, I can watch on True ID, and if push comes to shove, paying 500฿ more to watch it on AIS isn't going to break the bank. However, there must be thousands of Thais who have paid their 500฿, and will not get their fix of football.

I've been talking to my football team about the situation, and they are confident the situation will be resolved, but not in time for the start of the new season, this weekend,

After 4 hours of fighting with the system, my TV package for this season are sorted. My prime TV supplier is AIS Play Box. After 2 hours fighting with it at home last night, and 2 hours at AIS this morning with AIS on the phone with Ratchaburi FC several times, it became clear football clubs were selling something different to what was advertised. What made it worse at Ratchaburi is the TV package was sold as a condition of entry to live games.

The package being sold by football clubs will not work on AIS Play Box. The Play Box version can only be purchased from AIS. I was convinced at one point I was going to have to purchase a Play Box version as well (OK, only 500฿ extra).

I am fortunate in that the TVs I am likely to watch Thai football on are both connected permanently to a laptop. I can use the Ratchaburi version. There will be many who do not have a laptop connected to their TV, who will be fcuk'd.

Truly a Thai Football solution, when 30฿ on admission charges would have solved any shortfall.
