Yea, I saw that. Think they, all EVs, need to institute some kind of independent kill switch.
Only to be hacked in this day and age......

That said, Glaswegian on a Sunday night...... :duck:

Is this another lithium battery issue? We don't know yet but worth putting the story here until the details are clear. We can always move the story, or delete it with comment.

All flights suspended at London’s Luton Airport following ‘significant’ fire

London CNN —

All flights have been suspended in London’s Luton Airport following the breakout of a “significant” fire in the airport’s Terminal 2 parking lot, the airport said in a statement on Wednesday.

The airport said it would be closed until at least 3 p.m. local time, with passengers advised not to travel to the airport.

“Emergency services remain on the scene following last night’s fire in Terminal Car Park 2,” it said on X/Twitter. The airport said earlier the fire had resulted in “partial structural collapse.”

The airport stressed that its “priority remains supporting the emergency services and the safety of our passengers and staff.”

It advised passengers to contact their airlines for more information about the status of their flights. It said that airport “access remains strictly limited.”

Luton Airport is located in Bedfordshire, about 55 kilometers (34 miles) northwest of London. It is a hub for several low-cost airlines, including easyJet, Wizz Air and Ryanair.

This is a developing story.

"Andy Hopkinson, Bedfordshire's chief fire officer, said the service had "no intelligence than to suggest it was anything other than an accidental fire".

He said it was thought the fire started with a diesel car, and then spread through the car park"

16:36 BBC Live

'A lot of electric vehicles were involved'

Liam Smith, crew commander at Leighton Buzzard fire station, said that when he arrived, the fire was mainly on the third floor.

But it quickly spread down to the lower floors when the third floor started to collapse.

He said there were "lots of electric vehicles potentially involved quite early on", though the fire started in a diesel car.

"We decided to go defensive, which is basically where we decide to externally firefight rather than send firefighters in, for their safety as well.

"The cars were parked very close, next to each other.

"So unfortunately that was probably the reason for the rapid fire spread."

I'm not for or against electrical vehicles, although I think they were rushed to market, and some lessons about lithium battery problems not learned from other industries, i.e., Boeing 767 early issues, batteries in luggage, charging over heating etc.

I do wonder though in this story how high ignition level diesel fuel, in comparison to gasoline, ignites in a parked car?

Rather than speculate, it’s better to wait for the facts to emerge, as I’m sure they will in good time!!

It dosen't! But it will burn if a fire started by some other means gets to it. Such as a phone left on charge in the car, or even a burning cigarette dropped and left smoldering.

Fair comment, but EV's were the first thing that went through my mind when I saw the report I must admit.

On another note, I caught the tail end of a report on the BBC this morning, but can't for the life of me find it now. Basically, it was regarding the cost of keeping and running an EV in the UK - I'm sure other regions must have the same/similar issues and it wasn't good news for EV's particularly - Car Insurance significantly higher than that of ICE's (though insurance in general is ridiculous), Parts - in short supply and on a long lead time, Charging costs and availability....... My current car, a Mercedes AMG Diesel is going to kill me on costs in the next few years, but I'm certainly leaning more and more towards a hybrid rather than a full on EV.

Are the same "issues" there in Thailand/Asia?

With regards to the fire in Luton, it should be noted that due to the poor efficiency of the internal combustion engine, a full tank of petrol or diesel contains far more energy than an equivalent battery to achieve the same mileage.

That might change when the subsidies end, and tax is applied.
