I had heard the inverter type aircon units (not sure of the brand) were prone to being 'blown up' by geckoes.
Apparently the geckoes were crawling into the space between two circuit boards and shorting them out and causing damage to the point the boards had to be replaced....10K baht.
Has anyone been affected by this????.
Yes, we bought a Daikin 12,000 BTU inverter unit for the master bedroom last year, and within a week a gecko had got in there and fried the board. Fortunately, they sent someone out to repair it under warranty. That said, we've also had gecko-related circuit board failures on regular a/c unit types. The little bastards now get terminated in rooms with a/c.
Haven't noticed much savings on power as the bills have been hiked since we bought it.

but 12,00 BTU should be adequate for your floor size.

There is some good info at the following, but one thing that I would suggest is that you buy an inverter type aircon. They are much cheaper to run, and are now reliable.
My Panasonic 12000 BTU inverter has been working faultlessly for 7 years now. Ideal for a bedroom as they operate so quietly and keep a very stable temperature.
The new Samsung Windfree A/C's are the way forward (though bit pricey) - use dramatically less power and are self cleaning so none of the pesky 500 baht quaterly cleans!
