Stormy, windy days during Lunar New Year

Bangkok and several provinces across Thailand are bracing for rain and winds, followed by a slight drop in temperatures over the weekend, as numerous families will travel during Chinese New Year vacations.......

Much stronger Monsoon season for us here if it happens.

El Nino waning, La Nina to develop in second half of 2024

https://www.reuters.com/business/enviro ... 024-02-08/

......The pattern typically brings higher precipitation to Australia, Southeast Asia and India and drier weather to grain and oilseed producing regions of the Americas.

"Even though forecasts made through the spring season tend to be less reliable, there is a historical tendency for La Nina to follow strong El Nino events," the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center (CPC) said......

Haven't we just had a La Nina (two years of rain and floods)? These cycles used to be spaced out coming every few years, but now it seems that every year is either one or the other.

Quick scanning a half dozen articles this morning before posting the above Reuters article, the average pattern seems to be 1 for El Nino and then 2-3 for La Nina.

Looks like my observation was correct, they are changing - https://phys.org/news/2023-10-el-nio-pa ... tural.html
The results of both studies reveal a shift in El Niño patterns, where human activities are now overprinting natural factors to shape its behavior. "Climate change may have led to a climatic tipping point being crossed in the 1970s with the initiation of a more permanent El Niño pattern."

No, last year was definitely an El Niño year. As stated in the BBC article below:
It has been confirmed that 2023 was the hottest year on record, driven by human-caused warming but also boosted by a natural weather system called El Niño.

Yes, aware of that. The two years I was referring to were 2021 and 2022 when it rained pretty much non-stop in the south.

Weather forecast is for extreme heat

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... treme-heat

The Meteorological Department expects summer will start late this month and forecasts extreme heat in March and April, with temperatures of 43-45°C in some provinces.

The department said that this week temperatures in the upper part of the country would start to rise, except for the mountaintops in the upper North and Northeast.

The lower North, the Northeast, the Central Plain, including Greater Bangkok, and the East would accumulate heat, and the country would officially enter summer late this month, the department said.

The highest daily temperatures could be expected around 4pm this week, at 35-38°C, with respite only on rainy days.

"And this summer the weather will be hot, and extremely hot in many areas. The highest temperatures could reach 43-45°C in some provinces," the department said.

Such extreme heat would be 1-2°C higher than last year, and could occur in March and April, it said.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... mperatures

There's storms dancing around the East, Bangkok and down towards Hua Hin today. Don't know if they'll make it all the way there. I had thoughts of building an ark a few hours ago in Rayong as it was coming down in sheets. Very welcome to cut the heat and dirt in the air and green things up.
