Road traffic accidents and complete idiots

Post by buksida »

Decided to spend an afternoon on the beach down in Khao Kalok with friends today. As usual the road traffic was heavy but no major problems ... until just before the Khao Tao turning on the treacherous road south to Pranburi. Don't know what happened but it seems like a bus has collided with something as it is now facing the ocean and blocking two lanes of traffic in both directions.

As you can imagine a tailback starts to form, we're pretty close to the front so can see whats happening. The rescue guys seem to be doing a pretty good job getting the bus off the highway however the problems start to arise when impatient idiots come flying past the queue of cars in the motorcycle lane and the opposite carriage way ... just as traffic starts to flow again. You can imagine my horror when I see a bus hurtling down the northbound lane into the traffic that has been waiting and eager to move ...

Image

The pic shows the original bus off the road and the skid mark that put it in the precarious position in the first place (to the right).

My question is this: why do usually patient, calm and benevolent people turn into complete animals when behind the wheel? Where are they all rushing to and what are they going to do when they reach the destination ... apart from "gin khao" and watch TV?

I to wonder sometimes. I drive between BKK and HH quite frequently and with out exception I am amazed each time at the stupitiy of the drivers. When I got my licence as a kid we were tought defensive driving skills. Always keep 2 seconds for the car ahead of you, always leave a space beside you between cars to swerve. I'm sure defensive driving has never been discussed, tought or is even a concept in Thailand. I drove to BKK last week and made an observation that a good portion on the radicals were driving primarily Mercedes and BMW's. I guess you've got have money to be an idiot. Well......... that's not always true because as I sit here in my Hotel in Abu Dhabi I here the screeching of tires from the Pakistane taxies out side which believe me can be a horrifing experience also. Thailand is not the only country with idoit drivers.

Get out of my way I'm coming through! :guns:

SO true Hobiecat!!

I don't go to Abu Dhabi often but Dubai has just the same manic drivers!!

Not sure about Abu Dhabi death statistics but Dubai has the sad record of approx 1 death a day!! and countless accidents!!

If that's not bad enough I was reading a few days ago drivers in Saudi Arabia suffer ONE ROAD DEATH AN HOUR!!! Can you believe that!!

Totally agree with Buksida - WHY oh WHY do some people turn into maniacs once behind a steering wheel????!!!!

A guy screams past you, cuts you up - and a few seconds later you pull up beside him at the next red traffic light!! :cuss:

I'm hoping to become a HH resident soon - however, it doesn't appear I'll be escaping questionable and sensless driving habits when I arrive!

As a matter of interest - are road death statistics openly and honestly revealed in HH (and Thailand in general) or is one left guessing?

Wishing you all safe journey's!!!

In Thailand I think your left guessing but I'm sure it's worst than the Emirates. I work at the Abu Dhabi airport and am transported to work on a company bus the days I work and am amazed at the guys in the Audi's, Beemers and Land Crusiers doing 180km+ going to work in the morning. You can be assured that I'm definately in not that much of a rush to get to work in the monring. I don't understand the mentality. In Thailand I think it's a matter of lack of driver education not to mention skill and prestige. "My car goes faster than yours!"

Look out I'm coming through! :guns:

I have to say that in my short periods of time travelling
the roads in Thailand
Ive seen so many Bad accidents....

Mind the accidents with scooters vs Trucks....not nice

Also i couldnt believe my eyes once i caught the news on
a Thai Channel - it showed a fella (brown Bread of Course)
being pulled out from the back wheels of a coach....

I nearly brought my red curry back up!

Not quite what i see on the North East News at 6pm

Anyways...i agree with the Jeckill and Hyde mentality of
the Thais......

The Wifes just learning to drive here in the UK
gods knows what she'll be like after she's passed!!!

Asians can't drive safely because they never think about other drivers nor their own safety. In the west we are taught to safely keep a distance between vehicles, normally one car length for every 10mph, in Asia they are just taught to drive.

Well I wonldn't nessesarily agree with that. My girlfriend is farless agressive than me and a more defensive driver than I am. She quite regularly gives me s^*t form blocking idiots form passing in unsafe practices.

Well Richard - it seems the Thai 'blessing' and 'belief' is not unlike that of the Middle East....

There's a word used in the Middle East almost without exception - whenever there are verbal exchanges between a person of any nationality with a Muslim/Arab person - such as - "see you later" - "see you tomorrow / next week / next month/ next year" - whatever the time frame - you will almost inevitably hear one word to end the conversation - "Inshala" (spelling?)

Simple translations: "God's Will" - "God Willing"

Alternative translation: When driving (or participating in any other activity) it's God's "Wish" if that person arrives safely - or not!

No one is denying any person his or her religion or associated beliefs - that IMHO is their right - BUT - that very same 'belief' related to driving can result in tragedy for that person and/or (innocent) others.

It appears 'God's Will' in the Middle East and the 'Buddah's Will' scenario in Thailand bears a massive similarity.

I - and possibly others here? - may believe in or accept 'final destiny' - "What will be will be" - "When our time is up" - etc etc - BUT I also believe the majority of us live our lives in such a way as to avoid an early demise.

I've lost many good friends here in road accidents - accidents???? - I
guess I've just been lucky - at least up to now.....

Safe journey's ......

I also drive back and forth regularly between Bangkok and Hua Hin, and I would have to disagree with your comment about Mercs and BMW`s. At least with those cars they have good braking systems and suspension etc.

The worst offenders are the complete imbeciles in (mostly) Toyota pickups with a huge steel cage built on the back, and a back suspension that would not be out of place on a 10 wheel truck. I suspect that the drivers are high on something after delivering their load to Bangkok, and the only course of action is to get to hell out of their way. Next inline, and I will try and dodge the flack, is Toyota Fortuner drivers--mostly black ones, closely followed by small Japanese sedans such as Vios etc.

The most dangerous practice is the continual "tailgating" at high speed, they just have no concept of the dynamics involved in stopping distances.
I just cannot accept that it is anybodies right to slam into the back of my car, and risk injury to my family, just because Budda, or who ever else is taking care of the risks.

Terry, I note that you are commuting to Bangkok with your job, what is your opinion? :guns:

Saudi drivers

Post by Pagey »

I can verify any stories about the standard of driving in Saudi. They are regularly talking on their mobiles and regularly have their children stood on the front seat with their hands on the dashboard.

Sometimes the driver can barely see over the dashboard as a 12 year old drives his mother to the shops.

If you stop at traffic lights, look out for the driver in the right hand lane of 3 or 4 lanes at the front. He will invariably turn left..................... :guns:

Nothing surprises me on the roads here anymore.

Nereus

I've commented many times before, on other threads about the driving antics in this Country.

Something brought up in this thread that somehow has not been hilighted before is the insane belief that Buddha will decide when your time is up - and not your driving skills - or lack thereof. So - you can drive like a w*nk*r as long as you have a dozen Buddhas hanging from your rear view mirror to protect you and one stuck on top of the air bag (SRS) flap on top of the dashboard. Insane or what?

Unfortunately it wont change because it's not in the interest of the authorities to improve matters safety wise.

I have been driving in Thailand since '92, had many a close call with some of the brainless goons driving here - and sadly that includes some farangs, who probably don't have the same beliefs.

It seems that there is no way one can acquire advanced driving skills other than from experience.

The biggest culprits are undoubtedly the 3.0l and 3.2l turbo diesel single cab pickups - totally overpowered for the idiot driver and an accident waiting to happen.

I do my commute in a Honda Civic and am often threatened with a rear view mirror full of pickup truck. The irony is that I also have a 3.0l turbo diesel double cab, (a bit heavier but nonetheless full of grunt when it gets going). I am often tempted to use it as a racer but its a pickup for Christs' sake - something these idiots forget. i.e. the brakes are ok but the suspension and handling is not designed for racing - even more so when there is another half a ton of steel cagework and overloaded cargo on the back.

Rant Rant Rant. :guns:

Anyway - I've tried racing from BKK to HH and vice versa, in various cars over the years and frankly if you keep to the speed limit of 100kph all the way, you may take an extra 15 - 25 minutes to do the journey, but you and your vehicle will arrive intact.

I could go on forever on this topic

This link is the closest we've gotten this year putting some numbers to your question. There's one or two external links in that thread also with more numbers. Pete

Granted the better equipped car will have advanced braking systems and suspension when compared to a crusty 12 year old pickup however if they both have an idiot behind the wheel they're both as dangerous.

My bemusement is why they're all in such a rush and what the hell do they do when they reach their destination?!

Take the same people and put them in a market or shopping mall and you'll find them standing around like lemons blocking pathways.
