Before we get too indignant about drivers in developing countries, I have to say that the last time I went back to the UK, and drove a hire car; I found the roads were full of teenagers driving customized Honda Civics and Mitsubishi Evos like they were on a race track.

driving

Post by redzonerocker »

correct steve g, & add to that all the foreigners that have little or no idea of the rules of the road in the uk.
some things don't change wherever you are in the world. driving is one of them. even some of the most even tempered people i know seem to change into monsters when they get behind the wheel

I’m not religious, but I’m wondering if it could help reduce the carnage on the roads if religious leaders might preach that stupidity behind the wheel of a car will not be rewarded by a place in heaven (or any of its equivalents).

I think it merely boils down to the "If......., then.....' train of thought. Consequential thinking. The Thais, bless their cottons, just don't do it. It's certainly evident in their driving techniques, but also in other areas of their lives. "If I tailgate the car in front, I might hit it if it brakes, 'If I arrive late at work, then I might get fired', 'If I tell a lie, then I might be found out'. It's just not there.

This is not meant as a criticism, it's just a fact of life - however damned annoying it may be...

Hello and Sawadee to one and all. I was reading with interest and it's surely got a lot to do with "blind faith".

Jeez... you should try coming to Ghana. Up in the Muslim North where i am they are just crazy. pedestrians, cycles and bikes all swerve completely at random with horrifyingly close shaves every trip i take. Night driving is truly a lottery.

As one of our members stated, allah (or in this case, Buddha) will oversee and generally make sure all the nasty stuff like collision avoidance and general life-or-death incidents are dealt with so you can get on with your daily life (however short is might turn out to be).

It's not aggression, just blind faith (and staggering stupidity in my view but then i generally like to look after myself personally rather than bother God who's probably quite busy what with Christmas coming up and all).

See you on the road and stay safe, inshah'allah.

Russell.
