A bit of nostalgia (Motor Show 1968)

Post by Dannie Boy »

Saw this and thought I’d share it - some great cars from the era that I grew up in as a young car enthusiast!!

My Father worked in the motor industry for his whole life and I have memories of going to Motor Shows at Earls Court as a kid.
It would have been a bit later than that, early to mid seventies and also at the NEC Birmingham in the late seventies.
I remember seeing the Lotus Esprit from the Bond movie, "The Spy Who Loved Me" and also the model of it as a submarine on the Lotus stand which impressed me at that age!

In my late single years and early teens, I was really into cars and could roll off loads of statistics about them, but was never fortunate enough to get to a motor show. My dad was always changing his cars every few years - first was a 1937 Morris 10, followed by a 1948 Sunbeam Talbot, then a 1959 Ford Consul Mk 2, then a 1960 Austin A30 Countryman , then a 1963 Mini Traveller (a car I learnt to drive in at 17) a 1967 Ford Cortina Mk2 and more!! Fond memories!!

In the late eighties, my girlfriend of the time bought a 1952 Austin A40 Somerset from a friend, which I thought was a really dumb idea at the time, but we had some fun in it touring around. ( Slowly! )
It was a very friendly looking car and everywhere you went, someone would come up and have a chat about it.

Just taken from the commentary. "3 litres and a near £2,000 price tag".
Pointing out just how expensive the motor was implying that it's out of the range for most people.

Just contrasting how values in the day seem so cheap today.

Ok that was the Reliant Scimitar which used a Ford 3 litre engine and had a fibreglass body - driven by Princess Anne amongst many others!!

For anyone into cars of that era, I see there is a Japanese classic parked outside a business near the new immigration office.
I only saw it on passing but I think it's an early 70's Celica GT.
