Moving to HuaHin.
Moving to HuaHin.
We will be moving to Emerald Hill (HuaHin) January/February 2008. Can anyone reccommend a Company that will Ship our Personal Belongings and possibly some Furnishing from the UK. Also does anyone knoe of any airlines that allow extra baggae for people from the uk moving to Thailand. Many Thanks.. :
Experiences
I have just moved to HH. Still awaiting delivery (takes about 8 weeks). I used Simpsons Removals (UK). As goods not arrived yet, hard to make final judgement but up to now (information, communication, packing etc) have been very good.
Very few airlines will let you take extra on board just because you are moving although its always worth a try. Qatar air charge 35 quid a kilo for extra. They did reduce from 10kg to 4kg chargeable. Maybe you could as about freight then transpost from Bangkok

I sent my container from Thailand in March and used Transpeed for clearance in Thailand. They told me to send the container to a different port rather than Bangkok for clearance as the Customs there are more flexible. Final cost was about 32k Baht for teh main work and about 12k baht for the unofficial clearance. They delivered direct to HH and unloaded the container. Contact Annie at www.transpeed.co.th

I have seen on Thai Embassy.Com that as long as your belongings are sent to you within six months of your arrival you do not have import duty on them. I am talking about household goods. Can anyone out there confirm or contradict this info ?

Re: Moving to Hua Hin
That wasn't the case years ago, but perhaps it's changed. I would look for some fine print though, like you need a work permit or retirement visa for that to be true? That above statement from their web site is way too open ended for the way things usually work here. There must be more stipulations to it I would think. Hello Pete
My husband will be retirng to Hua Hin and although I will be with him I have two years to go before I can qualify. Saw this info via HHAD Ex Pat Site. Neither of us are Thai but it does say that you must have an O A Visa
which my husband will have.
If that is a retirement one.

I moved here nearly 6 years ago. I had about half of my household effects sent from HK. My stuff was all delivered to HH, without import duty & at that time I was only on a 2 month tourist visa. Maybe I was just lucky? Certainly haven't been since - I now get slammed for every parcel that hits the Post Office!

I defer to our in-house visa guru, Khun LOMU. If you saw it on here, HHAD?, then someone has done it successfully I guess.K2OWN wrote:Hello Pete

K2, maybe give us the direct Thai Embassy link where you read this information. Then we can take a look. Pete

That's not an official Thai Government site K2, it's a commercial site and please take what you read on there as possibly not up to date or accurate. I'll read more of it tomorrow and try to find the section you're referring to concerning duty/household goods.K2OWN wrote:Hello Pete

You're best bet at present for peace of mind is for you or your husband to call or visit the nearest Thai Embassy to you and see what they say about duty on household goods for a retired person. Don't talk about yourself, just about your husband who will have the proper retirement visa.
Unfortunately, be aware that regardless of what they tell you, it could be different when your goods arrive here. The governemnt departments here often walk to the beat of their own drummer, and that also depends uponthe day of the week and the weather. Pete
