Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Agree 100% with that premise. Too much profits for them to lose by going EV, both big oil and car manufacturers.Khundon1975 wrote: ↑Thu May 16, 2024 3:07 am https://thedriven.io/2024/05/14/nearly- ... udy-finds/
Interesting if true.
Big oil, obvious loss income, and manufacturers make way too much money repairing & maintaining ICEV.
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Got 3 possible models coming, end of this, or next year.
Toyota has a pilot program not, using for baht buses, low specs though.

Isuzu got one coming out:

And BYD has a PHEV, RHD version coming to AU, so will probably show up here:

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Ours is only a couple of years old so not gonna happen for at least a decade - we'll see how "advanced" Thailand's EV charging infrastructure is by then, but I'm not holding my breath, they can barely keep the regular power on where we live.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
That BYD is a plug in hybrid, nice specs also, and states maybe 100 kms on full electric, and 7.5 L / 100 kms fuel economy. May never need the ICE unless O&A
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
To quote myself, nice try, but "you're not going to convert me". The one you referenced costs nearly triple what our Mitsu Triton did and I'm pretty sure it'll run problem free for at least the next decade (as our previous Mitsu did).
I'm not anti-EV (we need to get off fossils) and can't be arsed to have an argument here, I just can't see them as being practical for the masses yet.
Maybe yes, for those that have the luxury of being retired and taking weekday jaunts, or those living in their own house in a city where its just used for commuting, or those not reliant on the grid for power - but it'll be a long time before EVs are the norm IMO, you can't just expect the world to switch overnight when there is no infrastructure yet.
How does that work for the millions of people who live in apartments and condos without a socket in each parking bay and being charged double for their power? Thais get a lot of holidays and they love to get on the roads, I still envisage mayhem at charging stations during these periods.

I live in an apartment like that in Luxembourg so I don't have a car, an ebike is more practical. How does that work for the millions of people who live in apartments and condos without a socket in each parking bay and being charged double for their power?
In Thailand, you can buy electric motorcycles that you can remove the battery from to take to you apartment to charge.
Anyway, that doesn't stop the millions of people that don't live in apartments.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
There are three main criticisms against EV’s, namely price, range anxiety and infrastructure and yet many countries have already mandated that new cars with ICE’s will no longer be available from 2030-35, so there will be no option available after these dates. Thailand hasn’t yet committed to any date but that could change over the next few years?buksida wrote:To quote myself, nice try, but "you're not going to convert me". ^As far as Thailand goes, I think that access to cheap EVs from China combined with abundant solar resources will be the main driver of change.
There is a point in the not too distant future when the realisation will come that drilling stuff out of a desert, shipping it over 8,000 km and trashing the environment is not the ideal solution to Thailands transportation energy needs!

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Is there not a good chance that if/when the world doesn't need oil anymore, the lithium producers will become all-powerful, and put stupid prices on lithium? We've seen the oil giants control prices for years. Will it not be human nature to see similar controls put on the mining of lithium?

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Basic economic principles will always apply, irrespective of additional cartel practices - lithium is a finite resource so as the demand goes up, so will the price - add in some additional manipulation and yes the price goes up even further.
Fortunately there’s a lot of research going into alternative battery technologies that will reduce/eliminate the need for lithium - solid state batteries use little or no lithium, plus other technologies (sulfur, sodium and others) will use less lithium than the current lithium-ion batteries, so no need to panic just yet Captain Mainwaring

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
At root, I suppose the underlying issue is one of energy density. A 500kg Tesla battery contains half the kw/h of energy than a 20 litre jerry can of petrol. Nothing can be done about it.
Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
I think that just shows how inefficient petrol is burned. 1 L petrol = 9kWh (diesel 10kWh)
Not sure what you math is going to mean, but here's my real life math & cost.
Battery vs 20 L petrol. EV will go further for less ฿ (30%) on the road @ 90 kph
MG ZS ICE ... 14 kms per L = 280 kms = ฿767 (20 X ฿38.38 / L)
MG ZS EV ... 46.3kWh = 300 kms = ฿231 (46.3 X ฿5)
