Cataract Operation at Hua Hin Hospital

BKK Hospital - Estimated but higher for sure, 1 lens.

Is that via Dr Pairat, who uses Bkk hosp to do his cataract ops? It was cheaper than that, but that was a while ago.

It is, thinking about going to HH Hospital as not happy that it's an estimate that will rise for sure on the final bill, was given a first estimate of 50k in the surgery. Already paid 7k then BKK say it's 69K for this first lens, that's a 50% increase on the first estimate, I can see this spiralling out of control as BKK hospital seem to be calling the shots Apparently I have 40% cataract coverage.

Just for info, I've had both eyes done at HHH, and both times the actual cost was less than the estimate.

I have been told to first go to the clinic opposite the hospital to get checked first, is that correct BB or should I go to the express clinic in HH hospital?

I used the express clinic in the first instance, but there really wasn't much advantage. The queues look horrendous, but they are actually quite efficient. The biggest problem you will have is convincing them you need the operation. On both occasions, I had to insist on the op, stating the disability was seriously affecting my everyday life, which it was - I couldn't make out the numbers on footballer's backs when watching live football

My son had a leg operation at HHH earlier this year, and HHH told him a minimum of 6 months before they'd even consider it. He went to a clinic, who then fast streamed it through. Bearing that in mind, the clinic might be your best choice, but TIT and like most things, it depends who you see on the day.

You could try Metta International Eye Centre at Ekkamai Bangkok. It is a Government hospital, I had mono focal lense replacement on both eyes earlier this year, I was very satisfied with the treatment. The basic cost was just under 35,000 bht per eye, there were additional costs of around 10,000 baht for pre and post operation checkups. The clinic is beside the Ekkamai BTS station. If you walk in you should be able to make an appointment for an assessment.

I had both my eyes done through the social welfare insurance, cost for one eye (actually the cost of the lens) was 2,500 baht. The actual cost is about 22,000 baht all in, but the wait is over a year for each eye. Done at CGH Saimai hospital. Part of the delay was the hospital's purchase of the latest computer controlled equipment, procedure was less than an hour.

I had both my eyes done by Dr. Pairat. It was some years ago and he was the only ophthalmologist in HH. In those days he did the op at his surgery and BKK Hospital used to send their patients to him. Now of course he does his ops at BKK Hospital which I'm sure raised the price as the hospital would take their cut.
The price at the time was 37K for each eye. After several years, my eyesight is still quite exceptional.

That's sad to hear. I paid, I think, 52k, for my 1st cataract, and more for the 2nd, as I have an astigmatism, meaning I had to have a special lens made for the irregular shape. I recall the cost being about 59k. Dr. Pairat can fix astigmatisms as well, but not mine, too many war wounds.

But the main factor for me using Dr. Pairat, was one of trust. I have had various issues with my eyes going back to my mid twenties, when I had to take 2 months off work as a consequence of an eye full of ulcers, thankfully, around the periphery, that resulted in me having to wear glasses for 5 years before the scars all healed. Sadly, they returned from time to time.

I also agree about the metta eye centre, which I visited. Which has an excellent reputation, and I believe is linked to the National eye centre/hospital. But trust in Dr. Pairat won the day. You could also consider the Rutnin eye hospital, at the top of Asoke, which is a recognised centre of excellence.

Typical in hospital pharmacy costs.

I'm not happy about the estimated cost with there being no way that the estimate will go down and then getting locked in with the second eye where the sky's the limit.

Yes, I have seen those reviews about Rutnin, but I attend every two months, to see a specialist cornea consultant, something not available in Hua Hin. I was referred by Dr Pairat, not initially to Rutnin, only to hospitals that had the type of specialist I needed to see. But after discussion between him and Pam, that's where we ended up. I see a specialist trained in America. The main difference is the level of equipment they have there, which can't be matched by a single practitioner, because of cost. Rutnin is also a charitable trust and benefits from generous donors. I see it as a well oiled machine, that takes you through the various processes and then spews you out at the other end - so registration, triage, eye test (computerised), consultant, any furthers tests, consultant, medication and next stages, finish. Dr Pairat stated that Rutnin only takes the most highly qualified, which I accept doesn't neccessarily equate to the best Doctors, but it's a good starting point.

They even manufactured contact lenses for me to mimic the result that would be achieved following surgery. I wore them for 2 weeks and was very happy with them. After surgery, the result was exactly as the surgeon said and I have not had to wear glasses since, not even for reading. All in all, I cannot praise Rutnin highly enough. I believe it's the only dedicated eye hospital in the country and it's also where the royal family go for their eye treatment.

Although it will be interesting to know how much it cost, the price now after 12 years will be difficult to compare with current costs.
