Why do you insist on telling me that it is available online, when I have always very specifically asked for an physical retail location? Do you think I am deaf?

No I thought maybe just a bit 'hard of understanding'. The general sarcasm plus the rolling eyes at the end of your first reply wasn't too nice. I know not to try to help you again.

PS - you don't use your ears to read.

And in any case, if as appears to be the case, that there aren’t any shops in Bangkok stocking it, buying it online is a good option - a bit of gratitude for someone trying to help you might be more appropriate?

My apologies. I was trying to use the emoji to convey an extra bit of informality to the message, but I am not very adept at these new fangled communications methods.

Coffee Price

Post by Big Boy »

A bit of a long story.............

When I moved here in 2012 I was quite happy drinking Nescafe Coffee Granules. I've always been quite partial to a regular intake of instant coffee. Yes, I like real coffee as well, but it is too strong for the amount I drink.

In about 2014 the recipe for Nescafe Coffee Granules changed, and it was leaving a massive residue in my cup. The residue was so gross, I had to change brands. I tried a lot of different brands, but finally settled for Khao Shong Agglomerated Instant Coffee. It was slightly more expensive, but no gross residue. I've been faithful to Khao Shong ever since...... until today. When travelling, I still take a bag of Nescafe 3 in 1 with me for hotel room consumption.

As expected, the coffee has been creeping up in price, and the last time we purchased it (a couple of weeks ago) it cost 335฿. We went to re-stock today (my wife had put 3 boxes in the trolley), when I looked at the price tag reduced to just 435฿ a box. Now I'd read the price of coffee was increasing, but 100฿!? I checked the other coffee brands on the shelf, and everything else was around the same price as it was 3 weeks ago, give or take a couple of Baht. I told her to put the Khao Shong back on the shelf.

I am now back to Nescafe Coffee Granules - just drank my first cup for over 10 years, and the taste is still acceptable, and the best bit, no massive residue.

I can only put the increase down to massive profiteering (else other brands would have increased similarly, but they've done me a BIG favour - I am now getting 40g more for 166฿ less.

The wholesale price of coffee beans has gone up recently so you might find that next time you buy Nescafé, that has also increased in price.

I buy my coffee beans from Anjana and their prices had been remarkably stable for many years, although last time I was there the price had increased about 40-50B per 500 gm bag, but it’s still not overly expensive and tastes better than anything else I’ve tried.

I saw this story a few days ago, so stocked right up when at Lotus's yesterday. Lotus's had several signs on display advising no limit on how many customers purchased. :banghead: I don't seem to be able to win regarding coffee :banghead:

Injunction putting Nescafé supply in Thailand at risk

A court’s temporary injunction prohibiting the sale of Nescafé products in Thailand could lead to a potential shortage if the situation persists, according to Tang Ngee Soon Super Store Co, a leading wholesale and retail chain in Udon Thani.

Nestlé is asking retailers to submit letters explaining how the injunction is affecting their operations.

According to a statement issued by Nestlé Thailand, Nescafé is produced locally through a joint venture, Quality Coffee Products Ltd (QCP), equally owned by Nestlé and the Mahagitsiri family.

However, the joint venture agreement ended on Dec 31, 2024 and the shareholders have been unable to agree on the future direction of QCP.

A court injunction now prevents Nestlé from manufacturing, outsourcing production, distributing, or importing instant coffee products using the Nescafé trademark in Thailand.

Milin Veraratanaroj, chairman of Tang Ngee Soon Super Store Co, said last year the store was contacted by Nestlé about its decision to halt its contract with the Mahagitsiri family.

He said Nestlé must still cater to the Thai coffee market, likely resulting in importing products from countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia to meet local demand during this period.

“I was contacted on April 9 and asked if our store could write a letter to Nestlé, describing the impact we face from not being able to sell Nescafé products,” he said, adding that he expected this letter to be used to appeal the court’s injunction order.

Under normal conditions, Nescafé products are delivered to stores nationwide on a monthly basis, he said.

Some wholesalers have received stock shipments for April, but if the injunction persists, certain stores might not get new supplies and may start seeking Nescafé from other sources, he said.

Some retailers may now begin to stockpile the products, he added.

He noted that the severity of the Nescafé shortage in Thailand depends on the duration of the temporary injunction.

He anticipated that if the order is lifted soon, allowing Nestlé to resume normal distribution, the supply shortage may be minimal.

However, if the court rules against Nestlé and the injunction remains in effect, a prolonged shortage could occur since Nescafé holds a significant share of Thailand’s coffee market.
