Farangs being stupid (again)

I find Thailand to be one of the most inherently violent societies I have experienced. Especially when it involves institutions of any form where a uniform is involved. There is a pack-dog mentality and that is probably what happened with this incident. Two packs of drunken Thai dogs and I am sure the four Farang were in the middle. Happens all the time here.

Speaking of dogs, this posting raised my hackles. I've seen plenty of very nasty scraps involving drunk British squaddies. As far as violence is concerned, I presume you've been out of the UK for at least 40 years.

Twenty years. I live in Bangkok (and Hua Hin) but my work takes me from the far north (Mae Hong Son) to the far south (Hala Bala). About the only part of Thailand I can not claim to have had much experience of is the lower Isan region (ie Surin - Buri Ram).

Wouldn't exactly say violence goes hand in hand with me. In fact the only violence I have personally experienced in Thailand is from the road-rage drivers who don't like a courteous and safe driver in front of them. I can safely say I have never got in a fight - even at school.

You can read about Thai-on-Thai violence all the time although much of it does not make the news because it is so everyday. You can see the gruesome pictures (if you can not read Thai) in Thai newspapers. Not sure if it is still going but there was a popular magazine called 911 that had gory stories and gory pictures from the police detailing the results of such violence.

How about Thai clubs and discotheques where Farang never go that have signs up saying 'No Gun Zone'? Ask yourself how many international airports (like the Old Don Muang and Chiang Mai) you know that have bins for depositing fire-arms - and this was pre 9-11!

I stand by my initial comments about Thailand being inherently violent. I think of the twenty countries I have been to it is on a par with Brazil and the United Kingdom.

Humour is actually my middle name. But as this topic started as a serious one suggesting that thuggish British lager louts etc...... I thought I would balance things by pointing out that not all Thais are peaceful, buddhist etc..... Especially when the demon alcohol is involved - mai pen rai goes out the window.

On another note: I'd stick with Hua Hin as a place to live. Has just about everything for me.

How about Thai yob culture - home grown and not imported - like the pitched battles between rival technical college gangs across Thailand, the drunken beatings, stabbings and shootings dished out in any rural village after too much lao khao or Yah Baah and the unprovoked motosai hoodlums in the genteel sanctuary of Hua Hin!? Or maybe even like a violent confrontation between Thai soldiers and Thai football officials.

Talk about Chinese whispers - I'd credited users of this forum with a bit more f*****g intelligence but obviously I was wrong.
