My 2 Satangs

Post by PeteC »

The below is from this week's BKP Guru Magazine which unfortunately is not published on-line. Authored by their head writer, Arglit Boonyai. It's worth the time for me to type it out long hand.

Things like this written by Thai's give me hope. Pete

LOOK KIDS, LAUGH AT THE DISABLED PERSON!

Did you know that disabled people are funny? You didn't, did you? Well, they are. I'm not talking funny in a 'hey, I'm Kramer from Seinfeld, I'm retarded, listen to my crap, racist jokes', kind of funny. I'm talking about people with Down Syndrome or various other mental and physical illnesses, they're hilarious. Honestly, there's not a day goes by when I don't laugh my head off at a disable person. Know why? Because they're always on TV, being used a comedy tools, that's why. And if they're on TV, it must be funny!. I used to believe that making fun or taking the piss out of mentally handicapped people was cruel and unnecessary. Oh how wrong I was! Not only is it fun, but it's an easy way to make people laugh on television. There are countless TV game shows, proving this theory right everyday. Need to boost ratings? Why not get Sayan on your show and have him dance like a monkey in front of the audience - a surefire way to get laughs. Need a comedy factor in your movie? Cast a couple of disabled looking old men, who spend a lot of time 'gurning' in support roles, and you'll have a hit on your hands! Why? Because I said, disabled people are funny. And unlike Joe Pesci on Goodfellas, they are funny ha-ha, like a clown, here to amuse you! It's so great that normal people (or rather those not suffering from mental or physical ailments) can rise above common decency and respect and have a good old giggle at the handicapped. I don't know why the rest of the world doesn't follow suit. Then we can get Stephen Hawkins on Little Britain and all have a chuckle! Or Paul McCartney's ex-wife Heather Mills, she's only got one leg, we could have her in the remake of The Running Man - comedy gold! And hey, it's better than putting them in asylums or homes for the disabled! So, remember, next time you see a disable person in the street, do stop and laugh for a second, it let's them feel they have a purpose.

Great stuff but unfortunately I doubt that article would ever see the light of day in Thai. Khun Arglit is preaching to the converted when writing in English. If it ever did get published in Thai, I am pretty sure the readers would be untterly confused by the sentiment and style of the article.

You're right, but I believe in the "trickle down" theory on forums. Perhaps 1,000 farangs married to Thai women who didn't or couldn't access Guru Magazine this week read these posts. They in turn may talk to their Thai wives, who may in turn talk to their Thai girlfriends and families.

Some good and awareness may come out of it concerning the Thai community.

And......by answering this post I put the thread back into the top 10 again...another 1,000+ farang readers. :D :D :D Pete

Isn't the correct geek terminology for that - "bump" ?
