Regarding the media circus, this really has been brought on by Maddie's parents in their attempt to either increase the chance of her being seen/found or as a huge smokescreen for what may have happened. Whichever it is, it must have hampered the police at some point, as well as placing them in a difficult position as Portuguese law prevents them from releasing information in an ongoing investigation, hence the wild speculation in the papers. Added to this, the UK press have taken the stance that it is 'obvious' that the Johnny Foreigner' plod can't do their job properly, whereas although that is a possibility, no one can really know that until all the details come out.
For what it's worth I have always leaned towards the idea that the parents are involved, probably in some terrible accident that they have tried to cover up, however awful it makes there behaviour afterwards seem.
