Pass the earplugs !
Pass the earplugs !
Hi,
I hope someone out there may be able to give me some advise. For the past month or so we have had a new bar right next to our house. They have live music every night and play till at least midnight. The music would be ok but the base is unbearable. There are a few of us living in this development and, if anyone complains the owner takes great pleasure in turning the music up higher. We have contacted the police who are very sympathetic but,up to yet, haven't done anything.Any (sensible ) ideas would be really appreciated.

Hi Lily join the club we have 3 bars over half a Km from us and the noise is unbearably loud & way past legal opening times its seems to be a sort of who can be the loudest competition from 10 pm its gets louder and louder
The police don't bother as we have complained many times, the Tessa ban don't seem to be able to do anything either, which they should and this should be your first port of call, the second floor so i have been informed, there are laws regarding noise in Thai law its just getting some one to do their job and enforce them but i think the brown envelopes just come into the play when these places are visited
I would suggest a visit to the mayors office, i would also suggest if you have some Thai Neighbors ask them if they would be so kind as to help with the complaint
Good luck

ear plugs
There are those foam earplugs available in any pharmacy. I keep a pair in the car and we sometimes use them at night to get a good nights sleep when the neighbors are around. They wont work well with bass sounds it seems though, only mid range. ( I use them when we go dancing at the Hilton. . they reduce everything to a very comfortable listening level.)
Another trick is to use white noise to mask the sound, a fountain running or the AC or a fan. . .but if you are right next door, white noise wont work unless it is so loud that the original music becomes preferable.
You might try renting a loudspeaker and aiming it at the bar from a few nights playing Beethoven or Mozart or Elvis at top volume, but that might provoke a confrontation.
Best advice of all, move. ( But dont expect to ever find a really quiet neighborhood.)
This is one of the things that amazed me about Thailand when I moved here. . the constant noise! What Thai people did before the advent of the loudspeaker, I dont know. Villages even have loudspeaker systems ( the one in our Udon home village comes on at 5:oo AM every morning and I see them around here in some farming villages. ( A sign of progress?)
The absolute worst thing about Tesco Lotus are the constant and very annoying "Bing bing bing" announcements, then you have the trucks roaming around with loudspeakers and when I taught in a Thai high school, any teacher worth his/her salt had a small portable mic and amplifier. Not even going to mention the ubiquitous karaoke, the "mall yakkers" or the Muay Thai truck making its rounds . .or even the more natural sounds of unmuffled traffic.
We once rented a cottage way out in the wilds of Kaeng Krachan and instead of the sounds of nature at night, were serenaded by the music from a bar not far enough away.

I recently stayed in a small village about 60kms north of Surin. The people there were really poor. The village was a hotch potch of corrugated and wooden buildings. The people wore rags, but seemed happy enough. My point is that for some unexplained reason someone deemed it necessary not to purchase food or a new tractor but a sodding great disco system. I mean, bloody great 20ft high speakers and enough power amps to accomadate the Labbats Apollo!!!! Why???? every night chuffing Thai disco music as far as the ear could hear. It beggars belief....

If you greese the palms of the police they'll do just about anything for you. My buddy has then patrol pass his house and sign a small clip board 4 times a night. Costs him 1000 baht a month. This of course going directly in to the hands of the Chief.
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

Erm! How much do we charge the general public to use this valuable information portal ?Hobiecat wrote:Unfortunately nothing comes for free in the land of smiles.
I think that is at least one thing that is free in the land of smiles

Yes, and I bet they sign the paper 4 times on the 1st visit, and do not bother with the rest.My buddy has then patrol pass his house and sign a small clip board 4 times a night. Costs him 1000 baht a month. This of course going directly in to the hands of the Chief.
Personally I think your mate is throwing good money after bad, and by paying the MIB tea money, he is condoning what appears to be constant police coruption in the town.
What gaurantees does he get that there will be no law and order problems around his house (NONE). He can hardly front up to HH police station and complain if there is.
Your friend is a fool easily parted with his money, if he has that much he would be much better suited donating to a worth while charity, not feeding the MIB.

I believe this night patrol is a service that is widely offered by the Police in Thailand, and is commonly used by Thai and Farang alike.
However, when I looked at a house recently, the agnet told me that the rate was lower, more like THB100 per week, and hte frequency was greater.
I guess you could always check, by having a check of the paper one night, at different times.
Probably is a valuable service if used and applied correctly. In my Bangkoko Moo Baan, the local Security do the same thing, they sign a book by my gate every 1 hour, and I have checked this and it seems to be correct (they also have supervisors that also do spot checks on the book)

Sadly it seems that there is an archaic law against noise pollution but its never enforced as the polluters be they bars or builders end up paying off whoever deals with it.
Also a lot of these late night thai style noise machines are owned by cops anyway so theres not a lot you can do.

Does he go out to check the board every few hours too?Hobiecat wrote:If you greese the palms of the police they'll do just about anything for you. Oh, that's a terrific idea, let's get into a big no-win fight with a local Thai bar right next door - why didn't I think of it?sandman67 wrote: Seiously though......my mate back home St George always responds with a liitle urban terrorism himself.
