If you greese the palms of the police they'll do just about anything for you. My buddy has then patrol pass his house and sign a small clip board 4 times a night. Costs him 1000 baht a month. This of course going directly in to the hands of the Chief.

Does he go out to get check the board every few hours too?

Yes he has. Numerous times and the times posted on the clip board seemed to jive. He seemed satisfied.

Yes, and I bet they sign the paper 4 times on the 1st visit, and do not bother with the rest.
Personally I think your mate is throwing good money after bad, and by paying the MIB tea money, he is condoning what appears to be constant police coruption in the town.

What gaurantees does he get that there will be no law and order problems around his house (NONE). He can hardly front up to HH police station and complain if there is.

Your friend is a fool easily parted with his money, if he has that much he would be much better suited donating to a worth while charity, not feeding the MIB.

I believe your incorrect. It's a proven service avalible by the Thai police in many cities. Although it is not obviously above board and not correct by western standards it's unfortunaly the way it is here. One dose what he has to to survive. When in Rome?

That's common in many places. When I used to spend time in Honduras, I gave the local police booth a bottle of scotch a couple times a year. They were always very attentive

I hope someone out there may be able to give me some advise.For the past month or so we have had a new bar right next to our house.They have live music every night and play till at least midnight.The music would be ok but the base is unbearable. There are a few of us living in this development and, if anyone complains the owner takes great pleasure in turning the music up higher.We have contacted the police who are very sympathetic but,up to yet,haven't done anything.Any (sensible ) ideas would be really appreciated.

Go ask to talk to the police chief and slip him (as mentioned earlier in this post) a brown envelope "in private". Do not insult him and drop close to 5 digets (Thai money) with a additional visit with smile every 6 months or so with a small contirbution to the police coffee fund and they will be happy to make it quite for you. Hobie, do you mean that anything near 10k baht would be an insult? Or that 10k would be about the right amount, but don't call him a twat while you're handing it over?

Just curious, but if your pal is in the house to check on the m-i-b, why does he need them? Or have the kamoi started on occupied houses now? Serious question, as I thought the main problem was with properties whose owners were away.

10K would be seen as a good contibution to getting something done for you providing you are not out purchased. 1K a month is about right for nightly patrols all thought someone said earlier that 100 a week was more in line. If your house is unattended get some motion security lights and timers for your livingroom and bedroom to corrispond with your activites.

He is away from HH working for a few weeks at a time and besides the security system installed wants some extra coverage for the family while he is away.

Dave have give the only advice that I can think of. I must stress though the usefulness of getting a local sympathetic Thai who has some authority or forcefulness.

I have found with many authorities that continued repetitive nagging can sometimes get something done. This will be far more effective coming from a Thai.

We have had success with footballing teenagers blocking the driveway with their plastic sports motorbikes. They were replaced by two packs of feral dogs that were constantly at war during the night time. They were then netted by the testabahn but the 3000 watt speakers over the road with the boosted mega bass woofers carry on.

I am tempted to try an early morning axe attack on their electricity supply. Even better would be a remote controlled relay that short circuits the supply at the touch of a button.
