rosie,
Did you check and double check only with the Melbourne consulate? I really think that if you did it would be worth calling Canberra (the Embassy) because it could be that the Melbourne consulate are all operating under the same misinterpretation, possibly handed down from a higher up there. If Canberra say different you can probably make the application by post to them. i am only concerned for you that you might go through the process as stated by Melbourne, and then say get delayed arriving in Thailand for some reason and be told by immigration that your visa has expired. The information I copy/pasted is from the current website of the Embassy so i think if something had changed it would have been changed on there also, as well as that info being the same as what everyone on here has been telling you. I am certain Melbourne are making a mistake or being obtuse. If only for the information of other Australians on here (and the rest of us too!) could you (or someone else in Aus!) call the Embassy (not the consulate) to check this? Whatever you do good luck!

I have discussed with Thai Consulate in Perth and they have not heard anything about this "new rule".
As mentioned previously the visa is valid for 90 days. If you try to travel on the 91st day you will probably have dramas.
Rosie, I respectfully suggest you follow WL's advice and phone Canberra.

vis info urgent

For anyone interested about my trip to Melbourne yesterday to the Thai consulate the outcome was:
In several days my passport will be posted back to me with a 6 month visa of which I can only use 90 days of it and the 90 days start when I arrive in Thailand(13th June).
I asked a lot of questions they kept saying you must apply 90 days before you leave Australia. I think they mean can instead of must.
When I said but what happens if my flight is delayed and I arrive late.
Then the penny seemed to drop and that is how they are giving me a 6 month visa.
Utter confusion on rules and regulations they need someone to draw up a set of rules that all Consulates and Embassies have to abide by.
From what you guys that have lived in different states of Australia said not one rule is the same here at any Thai embassy or consulate.
Sorry for any confusion I caused but I called it as it was written on the back of the application from the Melbourne consulate.
Just want to say I am sorry this never appeared sooner but I put it in a Foo about "Dry Trays" and then had to contact Lev to see where it had gone.
