Citronella

Post by huahindolly »

Has anybody seen any citronella plants here? In Hawaii, we had a citronella plant. If I needed a bit of mosquito repellant, I'd pluck a few leaves, roll them in a ball and then spread it on my limbs. Worked great!

I use the citronella spray sold in stores here, but I'd really like the original plant.

mossies

Post by redzonerocker »

never been bitten by a mossie :D
i have such hard skin, they can't pierce me :D

for all the countries i've been to around the world, i did find the thai mossies to be the most persistant :thumb:
used to get home in the early hours & find little red dots on my feet where they have been trying to jab me throughout the night  , but to no avail :D
& yes johnnyk, the feet & lower leg are the most preferred target area, under the table, out of sight & out of mind
it doesn't matter what you eat or drink, they are attracted by many things.
they have tremendous sense of smell & excellent vision.
it is highly recommended to use any product containing deet, apparently it confuses there sensors.
as for listerine, it makes my mouth tingle & eyes water when i use it so it might well have some effect on mossies too :thumb:

Interesting you mention the citronella plant. My wife got hold of a small, home-made spray thingy and it's basically just water with a good amount of lemongrass, reduced to water, mixed in.
I havn't used it as repellant for myself yet, but one small squirt in a room will see off any mossies trying to get in.
It's a really strong smell, but not too discomforting.
Is lemongrass similar to cintronella?

Can buy lemongrass plant from market - grows big bush, stomp up the leaves and rub it on.

lemongrass v citronella

Post by huahindolly »

Citronella smells a lot like lemongrass IMHO. Guess I'll settle for stomping on some lemongrass...

When eating outdoors I usually wear my scuba dry-suit
....Randy mate...I think you are staring to loose it up there in the north....

Someone told me that ankle biters hate Aloe......never tried it but it worked for him...and smells better than Listerine.

personally I follow Spike Milligan's advice and surround myself in a semi permanent haze of smoke.....if they don't stay away they probably die of choking. :thumb:

Randy, one of the old navy No. 1 diving suits complete with brass helmet and lead boots should do the trick, just remember to put some gauze over the air inlet.
ive studied and worked as a Culicidae scientist, the family of which mosquitos belong:

did you know (oi stop yawning):
no one has ever ever been bitten by a male mosquito
no one has ever ever been bitten by a non-pregnant female mosquito
only mossies up the duff bite humans or animals, as they need the blood for nutrients to facilitate the pregnancy process
now you feel guilty about all those mossies you've played electric tennis with right ? all they were trying to do was feed their un-born

upto 500 million people get ill from malaria each year and 1 million die from it

pregnant women are more likely to be bitten as they release more body chemicals and sweat when pregnant
the itchy lump we get is not a reaction to the bite wound but a reaction to the mosquitos saliva they inject to prevent our stolen blood from clotting when they suck it up, baby
they locate us by the co2 emitted in our breath, then land on us and decide to bite us or not based on the chemicals we emit - apparently Daniella Westbrooke was well popular, they smelt her, but she couldn't .............. ahem

HIV - mosquitos take on board HIV infected blood, but usually they digest it and destroy the virus, also they do not take on enough of the virus to transmit it. Phew

so to try and answer the OP:
the best non-spray repellent is the small units that omit frequencies that sound similar to male mossies, it makes the pregnant mossies fly away as they avoid males during pregnancy

those coils, black hole traps, electric plug-in things do not work well. spray is good though
.
Well thanksd a lot Super Joe
you have brighten up my knowledge of them mossies greatly.!!! I'd once had a thought that the reason why them mosqueito bite you @ Sunset and@ Nite is becasue they where spies and secret Agents of count Dracula of Transilvania.

Well They won't bite me for quiet a while as I head for Work in Germany as foreign Journalist again! Withdrawal Syntoms of Hua Hin and beyond will happen for sure!

Mosquitoes

Post by curber »

I received the following email a few days ago...personally haven`t tried it as mosquitoes aren`t out around here as IT`S TOO DAMNED COLD !!!

Subject: Mosquitoes-interesting
The best way of getting rid of mosquitoes is Listerine, the original medicinal type. The Dollar Store-type works, too. I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.
------------------
OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS:

I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house if you have one

Do you have shares in Listerine, or are you just absent-minded...? :D

Mind you, if ever I have the bad judgement to open an email that turns out to contain the words 'pass it on' I very rarely do so... :|
