I have a 3 metre diameter motorised dish.
I bought it a few years ago when I lived in Khon Kaen and you could then get the full UBC package on it free via Malaysia.
This doesn't work in the Hua Hin area though.

Over time, the number of encrypted channels has increased enormously, thus severely limiting choice.

It's great if you're into watching Arab and Indian channels - also in English sometimes, or Russia today in English - I've also found one Dutch and a German channel.

Also plenty of American preaching channels - well, they are in English.. sort of...

It also seems to take forever to find and change to a different satellite and channel.

I'm sure there are more satellites I could tune in but I've basically lost interest in it - too time-consuming.

Summary, pretty much a waste of time and money IMO.

My solution: gone back to UBC

If you're around the area and would like to take a more detailed look at it, you're very welcome - we've always got plenty of cold beer in the fridge!

The big dish will give you BBC and Deutsche Welle + a huge number of Chinese, Indian and Arabic channels.
The rest of it are American priest talk.
You are better off with the boring small dish from UBC as long as it's a sunny day. When it's raining you better stick to your cable tv because UBC doesn't work then.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

One of my Thai neighbours has one of those systems and I'd say you would have to be a big fan of bollywood movies to get any use out of it.

It's interesting what you say Barry. Parahandy (hubby) has been itching to get one of the motorised dishes for our house out here in the sticks. At the moment we use UBC (Gold Package - 1,500 baht a month) and he thinks we could get the same sort of programmes on a purchased system (rather than rental), and, being Scottish, he thinks we could save a baht or two!

Looks like we'll stick with UBC - we don't watch it a great deal. Mainly BBC news, Star Sports (for MotoGP and Formula 1) and the odd silly channel. It would be great if UBC would let customers customise their selection and pay accordingly. I don't want trash American series, or football channels, or Thai channels, or 5 movie channels. Just BBC, CNN, Star Sports, Star World (for the mindless stuff!) would suffice. :)

Oh, and we very rarely lose reception here. Even in bad thunderstorms.

i bought a Thai satellite system which i was told featured a few English language channels, only thing the supplier didn't tell me was that they're all american preaching channels!!
Saw UBC when i was out there and thought it looked alright but as i'm only able to stay at my home in Thailand for about 1 month a year at the moment, couldn't really justify the outlay. I think they do a basic package for about 800baht a month which would be ok but not sure what you get for that, probably not a lot.
If we could get CNN or BBC news and maybe a sports channel(i like watching Moto GP too) that would do us.If anyone has any views or advice on this subject i would be interested to hear them.
