Thaksin looks to the stars to end Thailand's turmoils
The former prime minister of Thailand has told his country that its problems will soon end – thanks to a realignment of the planets.
Thaksin Shinawatra, the owner of Manchester City football club, has said that the "headache" faced by the six-month-old government will pass once Mars leaves Saturn alone.
Mr Thaksin was deposed in a military coup in 2006 following street protests. However, his supporters won elections last Christmas – prompting further demonstrations by opponents and threatening a similar outcome.
"Be patient with the headache-inducing situation until July 2," Mr Thaksin said today.
"Mars moving close to Saturn causes the headache. When Mars leaves, the situation will ease."
Mr Thaksin has long placed his faith in astrology. When Bangkok's new airport opened he had the first plane land at 9.19am, which he believed was an auspicious moment. For a while as prime minister he cancelled his weekly press conferences, claiming that Mercury was not in a favourable alignment.
For Mr Thaksin and his proxy, the prime minister Samak Sundaravej, the "headache" is severe. The largest public sector union has voted to join the protests.
Mr Thaksin arouses such strong feelings because of alleged massive corruption while in power, although nothing has been proved. Many in the traditional political establishment also feel threatened by the consistent electoral success of the former prime minister and his allies.
The government's enemies are pursuing every available route through parliament and the courts to undermine the administration, regardless of its recent popular mandate.
However, Luck Rekhanitade, an astrological authority famous in Thailand for his predictions, foresees bloodshed.
Quite the opposite of being a good day, Mr Luck said July 2 will be "the scariest day of the past 30 years". Violence will break out in the capital Bangkok, he said, reaching its bloody peak four days later.

My Mrs was telling me last night that one of the Head Monks from a temple in Bangkok has predicted that July 6th will be one of the Saddest Days in Thai History. Four days after the July 2nd as above.
is the PM really superstitious or he just wants to blame everything on the stars and planetary alignment, etc??
well hopefully nothing bad will happen on july2/6...
Hi there Nessa
It seems that most Thais are superstitious note P'Thaks is the former PM of Thailand but it seems that our current PM Samak is somehow superstitious too. They really believe that the alignment of them stars has something do do with their lives and livelihoods. I'm a Thai myself (foreign born Thai but still a Thai) and I don't believe in Stars allthough I'm only 25% superstitious. I believe in the fate of man a he is responsible for his own doings and not any animals stars ect.

Oh Oh! Was planning on 3 nights in BKK from the 1st.
My wife is returning from visiting relatives in US. So the questions is, how do the planets line up for a romantic 3 nights? Three nights in a row lets see that would have been urrr....ummmm....ahhh...well OK a while back. You know what they say the memory is the second thing to go.

The sun and stars have been the basis of all beliefs since man first had beliefs. They broke the sky up into 10 or 12 segments and named then all after animals or people. I think there is some early astrology incorporated into the Buddhist religion but certainly there is in Brahman culture which pre-dates Buddhism in Thailand. The understudy wrote:

If these guys in charge still believe in it then it's no wonder they get in such a mess.
I am still sceptical about violence erupting in Bangkok. The Peoples Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have always ensured that the rallies remain peaceful even when the paid for antagonists and police get involved and the evidence so far is that the police are leaning towards PAD rather than the government.

So, thank goodness, Mr. Luck was wrong - or did I miss something...?
These charlatans get it wrong all the time, and people (including a lot of my students) still pay to hear their 'words of wisdom'. Does anyone notice? Will anybody interview Mr. Luck and see what he has to say?
