An account of the great face saving charade at Suvarnabhumi from BBC news:
"Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has presided over a symbolic opening of Bangkok's new international airport, by landing there on a special flight.
The new airport, which is seen as crucial to Thailand's tourist industry, was first planned 45 years ago.
Mr Thaksin had originally promised it would be finished by today, Thursday, but it is now not expected to be fully operational for another year.
Claims of incompetence and corruption have dogged the $4bn project.
For the first time since it was dreamed up, Suvarnabhumi (Golden Land) airport, was thronged with people.
These people were not regular passengers, though, but an entourage of cabinet ministers, dignitaries and airport employees all brought in for one day to sustain the illusion that Bangkok's new international gateway is open for business.
This extravagant spectacle was organised on the orders of Prime Minister Thaksin, because he had promised the country that the airport would be completed by Thursday.
The expanses of bare concrete, unsurfaced roads and half finished buildings told a different story though.
Even the government now concedes the airport will not be ready to handle commercial flights until June next year.
Corruption allegations
Industry experts believe there could be further delays to the project - which has already been dogged by delays and allegations of corruption, one of which cost the transport minister his job two months ago.
Airlines are complaining that the charges at the new airport will be too high, and that it will not be capable of handling baggage fast enough.
These concerns were brushed aside by the prime minister as he toured the impressive terminal buildings on Thursday.
He insists the airport will beat its rivals in the region to become East Asia's dominant transport hub - a goal his critics say is within reach, but only if the government acknowledges its past mistakes."

The BKK Post was full of it today - maybe in no small way due to the fact that the airport and more specifically Toxin are suing the newspaper over allegations that the runways were cracked.
It was also interesting to read how much had been spent on yesterday's event. I can't remember the exact figures, but one was around 5 million Baht for breakfast and snacks for the dignataries. There were a lot more additional costs as well.
It was pointed out that as Toxin and his cronies landed yesterday, there would have been no travel infrastructure in place to get them into BKK by bus, rail or pretty much any other means.

Two large Thai language websites suddenly dissapear from the internet becasuse they ran anti government sentiments.

It does so happen that organisations such as The BBC and CNN are respected around the world for news coverage. They certainly put to shame the government regulated dross that's produced in Thailand. OK, so the normal Thai person will know nothing about these scanners, but they would certainly be able to comprehend the fact that enormous amounts of money were entered twice in the budgets, with certain people pocketing the difference. These people have lost their jobs. It's all well documented and this fiasco is one of the major reasons for the airport's delay in opening.
Now, good old Mr T's comments about the opening date. He'd previously stated that it would be completed on September 29th. It was obvious to all and sundry that this was never going to happen. Don't forget that were were many non Thais involved and it proved more difficult to shut them up than it did the local people. So, during an inspection visit on 27th July he declared publically for the first time what the problems were and how long they were expected to take.
It's not unusual for a project of this size to run into delays. If he'd just come clean and given the information, he would have been much better respected over this than he has become by retracting his original statement on opening and telling us "what he really meant to say".
And then the lemon went and spent 5-10 million Baht on flying in his cabinet and foreign dignataries. The amount could well have been more than that. Certainly, 5 million was spent on breakfasts and giveaways alone!!

and In 9 months The important Job will finished but not compete for sure..coz still lot of thing to do out side the terminal .
If the important part finished...And IATA appoved Then we can open..( but not compeate) THE FACTS
.but still need to wait for transportation..and .Other project....BTS from Makason to new airport... and other thing to be compeated That can be 5 years more to compete
we want to do same as Hongkong have Sky train from town to the airport..and we need to make any thing convenion for the passengers...
and who ever delay have to pay for The fine
